‎HASPELS ADDENDA Additional References to C. H. E. Haspels, Attic Black-Figured Lekythoi‎

‎Small correction in pen to 1 volume. Light creasing to DJ. ; Attic Black Figured-Lekythoi by C. H. E. Haspels was a groundbreaking work on Greek black-figure workshop vases, and is held by most archaeological libraries. Haspels Addenda is a valuable reference source, providing new information on and recording references to new illustrations of the more than 1,500 Greek black-figured vases catalogued by Haspels. The references are taken from books and periodicals received by the Sackler Library, formerly the Ashmolean Library, Oxford. Changes in the whereabouts of vases are included, together with references to vases added by Sir John Beazley to Haspels' lists. The format of this volume follows that that of Beazley Addenda. Similarly, Haspels Addenda is based on the Beazley Archive's database of Athenian black- and red-figure vases, which was inaugurated by the Beazley Archivist, Professor Donna Kurtz, and the Lincoln Professor of Art and Archaeology, Sir John Boardman, in 1979.; British Academy; 9.3 X 6.2 X 0.6 inches; 110 pages‎

‎ANCIENT GREEK PAINTING AND ITS ECHOES IN LATER ART‎

‎Light creasing along upper edge of DJ. ; In his introduction, Stelios Lydakis notes, "It would be impossible for an art historian to study the works of antiquity without extensive reference to their influence on the art of the centuries that followed." Lydakis provides a complete history of ancient Greek painting from the earliest examples in Crete, Thera, and Mycenae to those of the classical and Roman epochs. Through a multitude of examples, he shows how these ancient works shaped modern ones. The literary references he considers include the works of Lucian, Philostratos, Pausanias, and Pliny the Elder. The works of art reproduced include wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos, Thera, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis; vases from the Mycenaean through the Classical periods; reliefs from the Parthenon; and mosaics from Pompeii and Delos. The book also features paintings made in later centuries by such artists as Mantegna, Titian, Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens that were inspired by antique models. ; 11.5 X 10.0 X 1.3 inches; 320 pages‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). ; Extensively illustrated and clearly written, this book examines the major categories of Greek architecture, sculpture, vasepainting, wallpainting, and metalwork in a historical, social, and archaeological context. It blends factual information with stimulating interpretation and juxtaposes long-standing notions with the latest archaeological discoveries and hypotheses. Focusing on form, function, and history of style, the book explores art and artifacts chronologically from the Early Bronze through the Hellenistic eras (ca. 3000 to ca. 30 BC) —and by medium. For individuals who appreciate—and want to better understand—the art and history of Greece. ; 400 pages‎

‎LOOKING AT GREEK VASES‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin). ; This is a collection of essays by distinguished scholars that will introduce the student or museum-goer to the study of Greek vases. Although the book is roughly chronological in arrangement--beginning with the appearance of human figures on Geometric vases, and ending with their virtual disappearance from Hellenistic pottery--it is not a history of Greek vase painting, or a handbook. It offers instead a series of suggestions on how to read the often complex images presented by Greek vases, and also explains how the vases were made and distributed. The volume is fully illustrated throughout. ; 300 pages‎

‎RED FIGURE VASES OF SOUTH ITALY AND SICILY A Handbook‎

‎Dustjacket has laminate lifting along edges. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin). Minor shelfwear to book. ; 288 pages; The red figure vases produced by the Greek colonists in South Italy and Sicily in the later fifth and the fourth centuries BC were at first closely modeled on Athenian prototypes. But they quickly evolved, exhibiting the highly individual styles and characteristics that are explored in this fascinating study. The red figure vases of the period are not only immensely pleasing as works of art, but of great interest and importance for the light they shed on mythology and drama, local customs and the relations between the Greek settlers and the native inhabitants. Close to 600 illustrations reproduce a wide selection of the more significant vases which are elaborately decorated with exuberant floral pattern-work and multi-figured compositions. 596 illustrations‎
