DYNAMIC SYMMETRY: THE GREEK VASE
Chipping and small tears to head of spine. Darkening to boards. Gift inscription to inner cover "CGB [Cedric Boulter] from JLC". ; Includes 16 plates. A careful and detailed study of the beauty and grace of ancient Greek vases. ; 161 pages; 1920. When the discovery was made that the design forms of the Greek vase were strictly dynamic and it became apparent that an analysis of a sufficient number of vase examples would be equivalent to the recovery of the technical methods of Greek designers of the classic age, William Sergeant Kendall, Dean of the Yale School of the Fine Arts, immediately recognized its importance and offered his personal service and that of the University to help in the arduous task of gathering reliable material for a volume. Handsomely illustrated.

RED FIGURE VASES OF SOUTH ITALY AND SICILY A Handbook
Minor shelfwear to book. ; World of Art; 288 pages; The red figure vases produced by the Greek colonists in South Italy and Sicily in the later fifth and the fourth centuries BC were at first closely modeled on Athenian prototypes. But they quickly evolved, exhibiting the highly individual styles and characteristics that are explored in this fascinating study. The red figure vases of the period are not only immensely pleasing as works of art, but of great interest and importance for the light they shed on mythology and drama, local customs and the relations between the Greek settlers and the native inhabitants. Close to 600 illustrations reproduce a wide selection of the more significant vases which are elaborately decorated with exuberant floral pattern-work and multi-figured compositions. 596 illustrations

GREEK VASES IN NEW CONTEXTS The Collecting and Trading of Greek Vases - an Aspect of the Modern Reception of Antiquity
Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). Else fine. ; Greek vases have been among antiquity's most widely collected artefacts since the 18th century. This volume examines trends in the collection and trade of Greek vases in the years since World War II. Norskov combines a detailed historical narrative with case studies of eight major museum collections, plus an analysis of auction and dealer documents listing 18,000 Greek vases, to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject. The volume highlights a major scholarly shift in the 1960s which broadened the gap between museum collections, which adopted the new contextual approach, and the collections of individuals who selected items for their aesthetic value. The growing curatorial emphasis on context also lent weight to emerging ethical concerns as the relation between unprovenanced objects and the destruction of archaeological sites became an international issue. ; 10.0 X 6.9 X 1.4 inches; 304 pages

THE IMAGERY OF THE ATHENIAN SYMPOSIUM
Minor pencil underlining and notes by Jenifer Neils to a few pages. Else book has very minor shelfwear. ; The late sixth and early fifth centuries BC were a dynamic time in the history of the symposium, and hundreds of vase paintings from this period show people engaged in sympotic activities. Most scholars have understood these images as illustrations of contemporary Athenian practices, but such an interpretation cannot account for the enormous variety of settings, costumes, and participants in the images, nor is it easily reconciled with recent methodological developments in the study of vase painting. Noting the close link between the symposium and the polis in ancient thought, this book approaches the images not as documents of contemporary sympotic practice but as vehicles for exploring what it meant to be a Greek community. It argues that many of the images depict imagined ancestral symposia and that they thus shed new light on how the Athenians envisioned the history of the symposium and its importance to their city. ; 10.1 X 7.2 X 1.0 inches; 233 pages

Neer, Richard T.
STYLE AND POLITICS IN ATHENIAN VASE-PAINTING The Craft of Democracy, Circa 530–470 Bce
Minor pencil underlining and notes by Jenifer Neils to a few pages [for a review by Neils]. Else book has minor shelfwear with a couple of rounded corners. Minor creasing along top edge of DJ. ; The pictures on Athenian vases of the late Archaic period often play upon the tension between an image and its material support, and between the sense of depth and the sense of surface. Richard Neer's study tracks design and imagery on Athenian vases in four domains: the symposium, with its elaborate riddles and poems; the development of 'naturalistic' techniques, such as foreshortening and shading; the birth of self-portraiture at the end of the sixth century; and the treatment of overtly political subject-matter in the early democracy. In each case, formal ambiguity provided vase painters and their audiences with a means of creating new conceptions of civic identity. Focusing on 'how pictures show what they show' leads the author to a re-examination of basic ideas about Greek art and its history, with particular regard to naturalism, realism, allegory, and the relation of ceramics to social life. ; Cambridge Studies In Classical Art And Iconography; 9.9 X 7.1 X 0.8 inches; 328 pages
