ALI NAMIC [sic. NAMIK], (1885-1953).
[EARLY TURKISH CRITICS OF SOCIALISM] Verite, justice, bonte. [i.e. Truth, justice, goodness].
Very Good French Original wrappers. Minor wear on spine, age-toned and foxing on some pages. Overall a very good copy. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In French. 446 p. First and only edition of this very scarce book written by the son of Ottoman sadrazam [i.e. prime minister] Küçük Said Pasha, including early critics of socialism. It is the first of the three books of this aristocratic Francophone Turkish intellectual who spent his childhood and youth among books, in his own words, "secluded among books". He wrote his all books in French language. Antoine Zellich, who came from Dalmatia as the manager of the printing house of Henri Cayol, who brought lithography to Istanbul, continued to operate the Cayol Printing House for a while after the death of his master in 1865 due to the cholera epidemic. Zellich, who was honored with the title of "printer of the Vatican" by Pope Leon XIII in 1888, died in Istanbul in 1890. The printing press is inherited by his eldest son, gregoire Zellich, and his brothers. This printing house continued its activities by growing and developing in Istanbul, printed a wide variety of products from books to magazines, calendars to stationery, school books to maps and commercial notebooks, and he sold them in its shops in Pera, Beyoglu. The company "Zeliç Brothers" continued its commercial activities in the republican period until it was closed in the 1960s.

Türk resim sanatinda Sisli Atölyesi ve Viyana Sergisi. [i.e. Atelier Sisli and Vienna Exhibition in the history of Turkish painting art]. Project by Yalçin Sadak, Sema Sener.
New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 208 p., color and b/w ills. This book has been prepared due to the exhibition held in the Military Museum and Culture Site between May 6 and May 15, 1997 in cooperation with the Municipality of Sisli and the Painting and Sculpture Museums Association. One of 1000 copies. "... The old "La Societa Operaia" and the new "Galatasaraylilar Yurdu" [i.e. Dormitory of Galatasaray Lycee] in Beyoglu, Pera started to host three art exhibitions; the first two would be held in the spring of 1916 and 1917, and the last one, which hosted paintings about the war - what would later become known as the Sisli Studio - was held in late 1917 before being brought to Vienna. The Vienna exhibition hosted 20 artists; Zekai Pasha, who had exhibited only one work in the late 1917 exhibition, "Bir Konak Dahili" [i.e. Interior of a Mansion] did not take part in the Vienna show, while the Prince Abdülmecid Efendi, the honorary president of the Society, who had not attended the 1917 exhibition, sent four paintings to Vienna. The opening of the Vienna exhibition was conducted by the Archduke himself. The exhibition, as Celal Esad pointed out, was well received by both Austrian visitors and the press. A poster was designed and the exhibition was accompanied with a German catalogue, Ausstellung Türkischer Maler [i.e. Exhibition of Turkish Painters]. Turkish artists who attended Vienna Exhibition are: Prince Abdulmejid, Ömer Adil Bey, Ali Cemal Ben'im, Ali Sami Boyar, Cevat Bey, Feyhaman Duran, Harika (Sirel Lifij) Hanim, Halil Pasha, Hikmet Onat, Hüseyin Avni Lifij, Ismail Hakki Bey, Mehmed Ali Laga, Mahmud Bey, Namik Ismail, Rusen Zamir Hanim, Mehmed Ruhi Bey, Mehmed Sami Bey (Yetik), Sevket Dag, Diyarbakirli Tahsin, and Ibrahim Çalli; with their 142 pieces of paintings totally, in different techniques.

In the mid-19th century, when the Ottoman Empire was adopting European social and political institutions, art too was affected, gaining... Within the context of the Turkish people's odyssey of pictorial art, from its inception to the present day, or in other words the dialectic homogenism of Turkish culture, the attempt to distinguish "traditional vs. modern" compartments, or "painting vs. miniature", will, as emerges from our study to this point, vary according to one's approach to the subject..." GIANMARIA POTENZA, (1936-).
Gianmaria Potenza: Museo di Arte Turca e Islamica di Istanbul Dialogo tra le Tradizioni, Venezia - Istanbul.= Istanbul Türk - Islam Eserleri Müzesi Geleneklerin söylesisi, Venedik - Istanbul. [Exhibition catalogue]. 2-5, 30-6, 1994. Curated by Beral Madra. Texts by Beral Madra, Carlo Milic, Paolo Rizzi.
New Italian Paperback. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In Italian, English and Turkish. 51 p., color and b/w ills. The exhibition of works by the Venetian artist Gianmaria Potenza at the Museum for Turkish and Islamic Art is the outcome of an art that establishes relations. Potenza comes from Venice, a city doomed to bear the burden of international tourism. He is an artist who clearly opposes the modern lack of time and the continuous impoverishment of human relations. The conservation of the historical context and a unique culture undoubtedly brings benefits for the economics of tourism. But clearly Venice must not be conserved for the purposes of tourism alone. The physical and cultural context of the city assumes greater importance with every passing day and especially for artists like Potenza, who have made such an important cultural contribution. Potenza removes cultural values from the vicious circle of economics as he continually strives towards a visual and spiritual discourse, people must take time to comprehend how tradition may still be identified in the contemporary. Potenza is not only the keeper of a tradition, he is a keeper of time itself. The picto-sculptures at the Turkish Islamic Museum are just one series from his rich creative outpourings. The works consists of an almost infinite number of interconnected small black wooden cylinders and cubes creating a definite textures.

Fine Turkish Contemporary blues cloth bdg. Set in four volumes. Roy. 8vo. )24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 47 issues complete set. Rare complete set of the legendary literary magazine, whose publication life was interrupted periodically due to financial problems of Cemal Süreya, one of the most important names of the poetry movement called "Ikinci Yeni" [i.e. The Second New]. Every issue is a special issue that has a large part of a poet and author. The publication survived between June 1966 and June 1970, and a total of 47 issues were published during this period. Unlike the first period, the magazine became one of the most important literary magazines of those years. Sureya sold the car she brought from Paris for the magazine. Due to financial difficulties and March 12, its broadcast life has come to an end. In 1980 the magazine was reprinted quarterly. During this period, only two issues were published and no more were published due to the September 12 Coup d'Etat. Süreya stated that he named the magazine "Papyrus" in his letter dated 22 December 1959 to one of his friends, Nedret Gürcan, because "the ancient Egyptians wrote their first writings on the leaves of the grass called papyrus growing on the banks of the Nile." ÖZDEMIR ALTAN, (1931-).
Original print (Ed. 51/100).
Fine Turkish Edition of 51/100. Original print. 50x70 cm. Signed and dated on the lower right, edition number is on the lower left. Born in 1931, lives in Istanbul. In 1956 he graduates from Zeki Faik Izer's atelier in IDGSA Painting Department. Besides the Paris biennials in 1963-1965, he participated in numerous international and national art activities, he opened so many solo exhibitions. His name became famous as a writer and lecturer. He was the first artist who improved and represented some western ideas such as the modernist, avant-garde approach to pop art and especially postmodernism in Turkey. He was also the first curator who attempt to organize an exhibition in Turkey; Avni Lifij's exhibition in 1968 was the first example. As having his own fiction world the artist not only assists Contemporary Turkish Art but also gives shape to its fate and it is seen that he is the one that impresses almost all artists of his generation and the next generation about today's Turkish Art. About this subject he expresses; "An artist gives references, the effect is inevitable, not the method but the result is important." With his productive natural talent, Altan proves that he has an endless, dynamic, energetic personality. In his creations, he appropriates an art understanding that coincidentally mixed incongruous elements such as; different textures, structure elements, materials, art view, light, etc. With clearer thoughts and ways from 1988, he developed the coincidental mixing method to prove artistic space is made up of different concepts, backgrounds, edifices, and logic that meet at extreme points. He examined spas and has taken them as the main course in his lectures. As a result of his research on spas, rather than the historic way he clearly declared that; "art meets from different ideas, logic, sources, structure and concepts". After this conclusion, he declared his ideas (with the title of space in art) first time, in front of academicians, at an associated professorship lecture in 1970. After that declaration, Altan has improved a new international art feature on that allegation. He coincidently made a unity from the different participants' works such as landscapes, plans, maps, and the district sketches, and at the end, participants applied the design with the alien materials. This method has been performed by totally different participants and it was the first of all in the art history of spas commentary.

CEMAL NADIR [GÜLER], (1902-1947).
[MIDDLE EAST] Original artwork in mix technique on paper: Mary and Jesus.
Very Good Turkish Original artwork in watercolor, Indian ink, and dry paint. 11,5x9,5 cm. This rare original artwork of Mary and Jesus comes along an exceptional provenance of Turkish cartoonist Semih Balcioglu (1928-2006), with his handwritten note on verso "Cemal Nadir'in bir kompozisyonudur" [i.e. It's composed by Cemal Nadir]. Signed on right lower as "C. N". Unpublished work. Cemal Nadir was a Turkish cartoonist. He was born in Bursa, Ottoman Empire on 13 July 1902. His father Sevket was a calligrapher (Turkish: Hattat) employed in courts. After finishing high school, he began working as a sign painter in Bursa. He also created cartoons, and his first cartoon appeared in Diken (literally: "The Thorn") periodical. Although he moved to Istanbul and tried to be a full-time cartoonist, he could not make it and he returned to Bursa. The Alphabet reform of 1929 gave Cemal Nadir a second chance to show his talent. When Turkey adopted the Latin alphabet replacing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet in Arabic script, all sign boards were necessarily changed, and he worked hard to meet the demand. The same year, he moved once more to Istanbul to work for the daily Aksam. Later, he also drew for the newspaper Son Posta, as well as for satirical magazines such as Akbaba. He also contributed to Yedigün. During this period, he published the satirical magazine Amcabey. During World War II, he drew anti-Nazism cartoons in the daily Cumhuriyet. In 1946, Republican People's Party (CHP) invited him to run for a seat in the parliament. However, he refused the invitation, he said that with political affiliation he would not be able to create cartoons.
