The Works of William Shakespeare. Edited with a scrupulous revision of the text by Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke. The Leicester Square Edition.

Thick 8vo. lxi 2 1002 2 pp. Title-vignette 21 tipped-in original photographic plates including frontispiece portrait the photographic plates are scenes from the plays; moderate foxing. Fanned to the left are views of The Tempest Prospero's cell – a scene; and a portrait of the author. Fanned to the right are scenes from Romeo & Juliette and The Two Gentlemen of Verona probably after the work of Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann 1789. Each of the views are separated by a pedestal on top of which there is a book showing in an open position; framing is done with multiple lines some light-brown dark-brown and off-white. / The fore-edge artist is one used many times from this retailer during the same period responsible also for: See 1: Jeff Weber Rare Books Catalogue 317 item 36 a massive Bible printed for John Smith 1821 also a split-double a different type of border pattern was used but the border was there and an element this artist uses with other paintings they made. See 2: Jeff Weber Rare Books Catalogue 330 item 69 Wordsworth Poetical Works Warne edition. The same artist working on behalf of or commissioned by Harrington's here also used a more complicated border incorporating a daffodil-flower motif similar uses of color and texturing or technique of applying the paint to create these detailed scenes. See 3: Jeff Weber Rare Books Catalogue 330 item 66 this time an erotic scene painted on an edition of Scott's Poems 1868 again the border is present this time simple two black lines and filled in with deep brick-red color to create an outline for the scene. See 4: Jeff Weber Rare Books Catalogue 330 item 65 Sir Arthur Helps Life of Pizarro 1869 another erotic scene again with a simple border – this time an oval one – with a device of copying the marbled endsheets so the artist copied the marbled pattern for the exterior of the oval border all painted marbling. These 4 examples are all the same artist product all painted in the same period and all distributed by the same retailer. While there is no name known to this artist one can identify the similarity of each of these paintings and know that the same person painted them. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks end-paper annotations. Probably commissioned by or represented by that firm just after it was painted perhaps a house artist the period of execution being approximately 1990s-2010. Bickers and Son, 1875. hardcover

[INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING].
The Prince Encounters a Village Girl at a Well from a fine Mughal Album
Mughal India possibly Murshidabad mid- to late-18th century. . Single miniature painting on card opaque pigments with gold depicting a scene with a Prince on horseback accepting a drink from a gold vessel from a village maiden miniature 282 x 179 mm full album page 394 x 255 mm; painting framed within multiple gilt rulings innermost frame painted with delicate pink and white flowers on a spiralling green vine set against a richly gilt background some very minor surface soiling overall in exceptionally bright and attractive condition framed and glazed.
Scenes painted around imagined amorous encounters between the 'prince and village girl' were popular among artists during the late Mughal period in centres such as Delhi Lucknow and Murshidabad. The concept of 'love at first sight' was similarly echoed in the tradition of the courtly poets of the pan-European middle ages and can be seen echoed through their visual arts.

The inspiration behind the theme in this painting was likely rooted in Persian literary sources the Nayrang'i Eshq The Charm of Love by Mughal Sufi poet Ghanimat Kunjahi d. 1695 AD being one such example. Written during a period of considerable Muslim-Hindu cultural interaction the poem was later absorbed into Sanskrit works and grew further in popularity. One notable section of the poem stanza 40.7 describes how in pursuit of a stag Shahid comes upon a village where he is struck by the sight of village girls at a well and is particularly struck by the beauty of Wafa the daughter of the village headsman see C. Shackle Persian Poetry and Q dir Sufism in Later Mughal India: Ghan mat Kunj h and his Mathnaw -yi Nayrang-i 'ishq in The Heritage of Sufism: Volume 3 Late Classical Persianate Sufism Boston 1999.

In this painting a beautiful maiden leans across to offer the handsome stranger a drink from the well. Neither appears abashed and their eyes fix upon each other as if a spell has been cast. Of note is the way their hands come together around the vessel of water though they do not touch. The mono green background gives a prominence to this encounter watched by the other village girls. There are subtle details that give context to the scene the stranger's courtly attire and jewelled ruby dagger. His companion's falcon hints at their noble status. By contrast the village girl's sari is tied in the style of a working women as she draws water from the well. For notable examples see Indian Painting 16001870 Oliver Forge & Brendon Lynch New York 2012 and Painting 91 in Domains of Wonder B.N Goswamy & C. Smith 2006.
Mughal India, possibly Murshidabad, mid- to late-18th century. unknown

[INDO-PERSIAN SILK PAINTING - after Ustad MANSUR].
Pair of peafowls.
1900. Ca. 107 x 74 cm. The silk canvas is mounted on a fibreboard panel of the same size. Painting on silk. Beautiful large and vibrantly coloured silk painting of a pair of peafowls painted after a watercolour attributed to the Mughal court painter Ustad Mansur master Mansur ca. 1590-1624. The intriguing work depicts a pair of peafowls in a rocky landscape. The peacock is captured in a natural pose running with a prey in its beak which draws the peahen's attention. The scene was most likely drawn from life. The peafowls themselves are painted in a Mughal fashion while the stylised background and floral border are reminiscent of Persian art. Unlike Mansur's watercolour which was painted on paper the present painted is painted on silk. It is also three times the size of Mansur's work.Mansur worked during what is considered the great age of Mughal art ca. 1580-1650 and was one of the favourite painters of Emperor Nuruddin Salim Jahangir r. 1605-1627. He received the rare title "Nadir-al-'Asr" unrivalled of his age from the emperor himself as he excelled in depicting plants and animals. Jahangir was particularly interested in nature and prided himself in being the first to direct artists to record it. And in this no one surpassed Mansur. He was known to paint birds and other animals unknown to the local population and is one of the very few artists to have painted a living dodo. His peafowl watercolour is one of the best known and most popular miniatures of the Mughal school. With holes and tears in the blue floral border and the peacock's tail the border is detached on the right side but still present a few small water stains on the left side and a trail of snail slime around the peacock's tail. Otherwise in good condition with colours that are still very vibrant.l Cf. MET SL.17.2011.36.1; Welch S. Imperial Mughal painting p. 91. unknown

The land retains an identity of its own still deeper and more subtle than we can know. Our obligation toward it then becomes simple: to approach with an uncalculating mind with an attitude of regard. To try to sense the range and variety of its expression—its weather and colors and animals. To intend from the beginning to preserve some of the mystery within it as a king of wisdom to be experienced not questioned. And to be alert for its openings for that moment when something sacred reveals itself within the mundane and you know the land knows you are there." Fine Janus Press — Fifty Years p. 46. [JAPANESE EROTIC COLOR PAINTING]
AN EROTIC JAPANESE PAINTING ON SILK: A BUDDHIST PRIEST MAKING LOVE TO A WOMAN
Japan ca. 1915. A color silk painting 30 x 20 cm. very clean and solid on very fine silk finely drawn & executed in color gouache. RARE ORIGINAL PAINTED ART WORK . . . AN ORIGINAL FINELY HAND-PAINTED . . . COLOR EROTIC SCENE . . . TAISHO PERIOD 1912-1926 . This work shows a Buddhist monk wearing a common Kimono with shaved head disguised as a commoner. He secretly visits his lover and willing bed partner. She appears to be a house wife obviously of another man. Buddhist priests never married though they carried on an erotic life style. . She wears an elaborate silk Kimono with period coiffure. Spreading her legs keeping her knees back welcoming her lover. Her feet express ecstasy curled and pointing upwards clutching her lover tight and close to her. The monk holds her back firmly and with his right hand grasping her knee keeping them up and back thus forcing her wide open. . She is flushed with excitement showing a pink facial flush eyes closed in ecstasy. There is a gray Furoshiki large silk scarf tied into a bag above the woman. It most likely contains the monks Buddhist robes. He thus avoids the attention of others when walking the streets. . CONDITION: The painting is flawlessly executed. It's very clean and solid no stain or other issues of importance. . The work was probably mounted on a stiff album page in its past. It has been expertly 'lifted' and shows the usual but minimal remains at the right and left edges which does not encroach on the painting. What little remains is easily matted out. There are a few small verso mends using period Washi handmade Japanese paper which will not be very visible from the front when mounted on white paper. . A very nicely executed example with good colors ready for matting and framing . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCE: . Erotic books prints & paintings were "suppressed" by the Tokugawa Shogunate therefore the majority of these kinds of erotic sold on the 'black market' and not distributed openly. . These erotic paintings drawings and woodblock printed Shunga books & art remained on the 'fringe.' The Shogunate enforced stiff penalties for artists block cutters publishers & printers of erotica. The Shogunate and its sensors would not approve or provide Kiwame censor's seal for this category of art or books. Items without Kiwame were subject to confiscation and anyone involved with the items when distributed to the general public were often harshly punished with imprisonment. These remained in 'private collections' and were strictly & discretely sold traded and distributed 'under the table' during the Edo period 1603-1867. . REFERENCES: . [NORTHWEST PASSAGE - PAINTING].
The ships Erebus and Terror in the Arctic.
England 1850. Later mounted on another canvas and stretched over a wooden frame with a handwritten note about the painting pasted on the back. Oil painting on canvas 65.5 x 91 cm showing 2 ships in a rough sea amid dangerous rocks and ice. A mid-19th-century oil painting depicting two ships 3-masted barks in a rough sea amid dangerous rocky and icy cliffs mountains and outcroppings. Pasted to the back is an old slip of paper with a note the parts of the text in parentheses are lost but have been filled in based on an earlier transcription: "The sailing ships 'Erebus' and 'Terror' passing through the Davis Straight in 1846 the 6 later "corrected" to 7. It was on this expedition that Sir John Franklin discovered the North West Passage and in which he lost his life". In fact Franklin sailed these two ships through Davis Strait in 1845 passed on through Lancaster Sound in search of a Northwest Passage and spent the winter on Beechey Island. In 1846 he and his expedition made their way through using the modern names Peel Sound and Franklin Strait into McClintock Channel where they got caught in the ice near King William Island. Most of the crew died there including Franklin in 1847. A few made it on foot to the mainland but were unable to reach any outpost. The last died in 1848. Since no one who saw the ships in these waters survived the anonymous artist who made the present painting appears to have turned to an 1847 painting of the same ships by John Wilson Carmichael in London though he did not copy it. Carmichael had earlier made a drawing of an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage by William Edward Parry who made three expeditions in the years 1819 to 1825 each with two ships but in 1847 he used parts of his existing Arctic scene as models for the composition of a new painting showing an Antarctic scene of James Clark Ross's voyage with the ships Erebus and Terror in 1842: "'Erebus' and 'Terror' in the Antarctic". Carmichael's drawing and painting survive at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. The central ship in the present painting follows that in Carmichael's painting quite closely and the second ship more distantly. The rocks and ice are similar in general appearance and arrangement but quite different in detail. With some restorations along the edges of the painting and a small scuffmark near the foot toward the left but generally in good condition.l Cf. [original art, painting]
Wall calendar with original painting after Henri Fantin-Latour
None. Very good. Original gouache painting on panel 11.75 x 10 inches. Printed calendar for 1950 mounted beneath the image. 7.75 x 7 inches. A buff-toned panel painted white on both sides with an inset frame giving the impression of being a matted painting. Small ribbon hanging loop affixed to the top for display. A subdued but evocative still life after French painter Henri Fantin-Latour 1836-1904 renowned for his floral still lifes. Known as the "Betrothal Still Life" the original painting was completed in 1869 and has characteristically deep tones which our painter feels are lacking from this copy. A note on the back reads: "This is a copy I have made from a Fantin-Latour that I saw that time in France - I brought back a small photograph and a vivid memory so that the whole is not unlike - but it is too light in tone - a thing I cannot easily avoid in this medium." But we're actually partial to the tonal nuances in the generously laid gouache with pastel-skewing tones although fugitive pigments may also take some credit for this. Also inscribed on the back "With love and every good wish for Christmas 1949" and a pencil note "1806-1934" in the lower left corner we suspect might be a case of accidentally transposing the artist's dates 1836-1904.

unknown

[PAINTING ON LEATHER - JAPANESE - DESHIMA].
A birds-eye view of the Dutch trading post on Deshima Japan with in the background a Dutch three-master anchored in Nagasaki Bay.
Japan 1800. In a passepartout and framed. Drawing size ca. 34 x 39.5 cm; frame size ca. 46 x 51 cm. Oil painting on leather. Late 18th-century painting on leather depicting everyday life on the island of Deshima in Japan created by an anonymous artist who seems to be of Japanese origin possibly originating from the Nagasaki school of painting: the faces of most human figures show remarkable Japanese features despite their reddish-brown hair and Dutch clothing.Judging by a woodcut map of Deshima published in 1780 by Toshimaya Bunjiemon the south-eastern part of the island is shown in the present illustration. On the left the warehouse masters residence next to a tall flagpole with the Dutch flag at top; in the centre the important watergate through which cargo was brought in via ship with four Dutch merchants one seen from behind and two Javanese servants in front of the gate; on the right the warehouse "De Lelie" The Lily. In the background lying in the bay of Nagasaki a Dutch three-master has been depicted with fourteen hoisted Dutch flags and several sailors on deck and in the rigging. This ship closely resembles a transom return ship in Dutch: "spiegelretourschip" which was used by the Dutch East India Company VOC during its whole existence.Based on the depicted style of clothing of the Dutch merchants we assume that this painting could have been made during the second half of the 18th century. The artificial island of Deshima was a small fan-shaped island used as trading post initially by the Portuguese until 1639 and subsequently by the Dutch from 1641 until 1858. During the Tokugawa Shogunate the military government of Japan in the Edo period of 1603-1868 foreigners were not allowed to enter the Japanese territory and the island of Deshima was the only place where initially only the Portuguese and later only the Dutch were admitted. With some flaking of the paint off the leather slightly affecting the image but mainly affecting the upper outer corners. Otherwise in good condition.l H. Paul Nederlanders in Japan 1600-1854. De VOC op Desjima pp. 106-107. unknown

[PAINTING ALBUM]
Nikuhitsu Manga KAIKOKU ROKUJUNENSHI ZU-E
1927. PAINTING ALBUM. Nikuhitsu Manga KAIKOKU ROKUJUNENSHI ZU-E. Done by the Chuo Bijutsu Kyokai in Tokyo in 1927 as a 43 x 31 cm portfolio of 52 original watercolor drawings counting the table of contents and cover title label on satiric and comical themes done to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Japan in the mid-19th century. The title represents quite a liberal interpretation of chronology since the opening of Japan was in 1854 but it is probably refers to the Meiji Restoration as the beginning of "opening" and also refers to Baron Okuma's somber and influential 50 year history of modern Japan with its almost identical title done in 1909. There was more than one set of these drawings assembled. It seems to have been issued as a limited hand-drawn edition. One of several such major painted works in a manga style There is a hand-written table of contents/colophon with the captions of the drawings and their artists listed by Nakamura Fusetsu 1866-1943 the important Haiga artist. Two dozen or so of the most prominent cartoonists satirists and artists are represented. One of the two watercolors by the great cartoonist Okamoto Ippei 1886-1948 is a caricature of his friend Natsume Soseki the famous author of "I Am A Cat" captured with his pet tabby beside him inextricably linked in Ippei's imagination and ours. The "father of modern manga" Kitazawa Rakuten 1876-1955 has two as do the important printmakers Maekawa Sempan 1888-1960 and Mizushima Nihofu 1884-1958. The list of talented and significant contributors goes on as does the subject matter: political satire China vs. Japan East vs. West tradition vs. modernity technology vs. craft from abstract Sumo wrestlers to a surreal embodied eye a congeries of images overwhelms our eyes in turn. A wonderful visual epitome of the free spirit of democracy if not anarchy in the 1920s before the dark days to come. In very good condition the watercolors are skillful and powerful. There is quite a bit of contemporary supplementary material included from the time. unknown

[PAINTING - SKATE].
Oil study of a skate.
1800. In a contemporary wooden frame ca. 28.5 x 34 cm. Oil on canvas ca. 20.5 x 26.5 cm unsigned. A finely observed 19th-century oil study of a skate shown resting on a neutral background. The artist captures the texture and colour of the fish with careful attention to light and detail giving the work a quiet natural presence. Paintings like this were often made as studies from life reflecting the 19th-century interest in nature and everyday subjects. The restrained composition and subtle tones lend the piece a sense of calm realism. An appealing work that would suit both collectors of 19th-century painting and those interested in natural history or maritime subjects.A minor barely detectable dent near the bottom of the painting several cracks on the edges which are mostly hidden by the frame laid down on modern canvas. The frame shows traces of use. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

[PAINTING] Arikata Toshiro 有方敏郎
VIEW OF THE SEA FROM SEORAKSAN 雪ç„山より海を望む
1970. PAINTING Arikata Toshiro 有方æ•郎
. An interesting oil perhaps magna acrylic oil painting on board. 38cm X 45.4cm. Dated on the rear as done in 1970. The title of the piece also inscribed on the back is VIEW OF THE SEA FROM MOUNT SEORAKSAN 雪ç„山より海を望む
. It is a famous place of natural beauty near the east coast of South Korea. Arikata was born in 1922 and had a long artistic career. Interestingly his career was distinguished by the fact he was tutored in painting by Yoshihara Jiro the founder of GUTAI. Arikata was in his early 30s.

The flat unmodulated bold colors give this an almost surreal feeling very anime if you will. Is it sunrise or sunset Seoraksan is famous for both. And the tiny ship at sea counterpoints the vastness of the scene.

With a bit of rubbing but still bold and visually very rich. unknown
