Since the 1640s Ludolf had been working in Gotha in the diplomatic service of Duke Ernst I of Sachsen-Gotha who encouraged his Ethiopic studies and since 1675 in the service of his son and successor Friedrich I. He is best known for his monumental history of Ethiopia Historia Aethiopica Frankfurt 1681 with supplemental works to 1694. The present little book is his first publication seriously devoted to the history of Ethiopia and marks the beginning of the work that was to lead to his magnum opus.With bookplate owner's inscription and library stamp. Sous le titre d'Historia AEthiopica Ludolf ne se contente pas de traiter de l'histoire mais de bien d'autres sujets et aspects de la culture �thiopienne : qu'il s'agisse de g�ographie ou des ressources naturelles des langues et de la population du r�gime politique de l'�glise et de la religion de la litt�rature et de l'�conomie ou encore de la vie quotidienne des Ethiopiens. Ce pr�sent ouvrage en est la traduction fran�aise. Ludolf a �crit dans la langue des �rudits de son �poque le latin. Pour �crire son ouvrage Ludolf s'est appuy� sur la quasi-totalit� des publications connues � son �poque mais il a surtout �t� grandement aid� par Abba Gorgorios un pr�tre �thiopien venu en Europe pour �tudier le latin. Ils se rencontr�rent � Rome et travaill�rent ensemble Gorgorios lui fournissant des d�tails et des informations de premi�re main soit oralement soit par �crit. Ludolf les a ensuite compar�s aux �crits consult�s particuli�rement � ceux laiss�s par les j�suites portugais venus en Ethiopie aux XVIe et XVIIe si�cles. Les r�sultats de cette collaboration sont surprenants et se traduisent par une oeuvre dont les chercheurs et sp�cialistes peuvent mesurer la valeur. Ceux qui s'int�ressent � l'Ethiopie � sa culture et � tout ce qui concerne ce pays y trouveront satisfaction. On ne disposait jusque-l� que de quelques r�cits de voyage des rapports des p�res de la Soci�t� de j�sus mais d'aucun livre de cette importance sur l'Histoire de l'Ethiopie et de sa culture. Il faudra attendre le XVIIIe si�cle pour trouver de tels livres. L'ouvrage comporte une carte d'Ethiopie d'un int�r�t particulier puisqu'elle est la premi�re carte fiable de ce pays et qu'elle indique les vraies sources du Nil encore inconnues � l'�poque. La parution de ce livre fut un �v�nement marquant pour la connaissance de d'Ethiopie. C'est-le seul ouvrage d�taill� qui fait autorit� sur tout ce qui int�resse l'Ethiopie jusqu'en 1680. Les chercheurs ou les auteurs actuels pourront dor�navant se r�f�rer � l'autorit� de Ludolf sur les p�riodes qu'il d�crit. L'�dition originale comporte des textes en gu�ze en portugais et en arabe avec leurs traductions. Ceux-ci sont pr�sent�s sur deux colonnes. Les textes gu�zes et portugais sont renvoy�s � la fin du chapitre dans lequel ils apparaissaient pour ne pas alourdir la pr�sentation. Quant aux textes en arabe citations du G�ographe Nubien et de al-Makin � propos du Nil en Nubie souvent appel�e Ethiopie par les anciens nous reproduisons les traductions de Ludolf. Le d�veloppement actuel des �tudes �thiopiennes a rendu n�cessaire cette traduction. Trois latinistes de l'Universit� de Bordeaux et deux �thiopisants de l'INALCO de Paris se sont engag�s dans cette t�che. Une �tude approfondie a �t� men�e pour rester tr�s proche du texte original. The German Job Ludolf was the first to bring the study of Etiopian subjects into a system and his present work is the first of its kind to see the light of day. It was unusal for the time to take up the study of something like the Ethiopian laguage and after Ludolfus' important philological works followed a long period of neglect which did not end till the second half of the nineteenth century when these studies were finally resumed causing them to flourish.
