A fabulous abecedary with Lemaitre's amusing prose enhanced by the fantastic illustrations of JOB. A very nice example of this beautiful illustrated book. OCLC 21469822 AUTHOR: François Élie Jules Lemaître 1853 1914 was a French critic and dramatist. He became a professor at the University of Grenoble in 1883 but was already well known for his literary criticism and in 1884 he resigned his position to devote his time to literature. Lemaître's sketches of modern authors show great insight and unexpected judgment as well as gaiety and originality of expression. He was admitted to the French Academy on 16 January 1896. In his later years Lemaitre worked on this abecedary -- a collection of stories illustrating the letters of the alphabet. Some of the stories were original; others were adapted from tales by Anderson Perrault and others. Unfortunately World War I intervened and the book was not published until 1919 after Lemaitre's death. ILLUSTRATOR: Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Bréville known by the pen name JOB after his initials 1858 1931 was a French artist and illustrator. After military service he joined the École des beaux-arts and exhibited at the 1886 'Salon des Artistes Français' receiving a mixed reception. His successful career was as an illustrator contributing caricatures to La Caricature and to La Lune and is best known for his illustrations for children's books such as this. Jena: Samuel Krebs 1676. Late 19th-century half textured blue cloth sewn on 2 tapes spine-title in gold black and blue chemical-marbled sides. 4to. Title-page in red and black with a small ornament a woodcut arabesque tailpiece 5 woodcut decorated initials 3 series and a headpiece built up from cast fleurons. Set in roman types with some italic Greek Hebrew Arabic and especially Ethiopic type. First and only edition of a brief history of Ethiopia by Job Ludolf 1624-1704 who was to become the leading Ethiopic scholar of his generation. Since the 1640s Ludolf had been working in Gotha in the diplomatic service of Duke Ernst I of Sachsen-Gotha who encouraged his Ethiopic studies and since 1675 in the service of his son and successor Friedrich I. He is best known for his monumental history of Ethiopia Historia Aethiopica Frankfurt 1681 with supplemental works to 1694. The present little book is his first publication seriously devoted to the history of Ethiopia and marks the beginning of the work that was to lead to his magnum opus.With bookplate owner's inscription and library stamp. Foxed and browned especially in the last 2 leaves. The German Job Ludolf was the first to bring the study of Etiopian subjects into a system and his present work is the first of its kind to see the light of day. It was unusal for the time to take up the study of something like the Ethiopian laguage and after Ludolfus' important philological works followed a long period of neglect which did not end till the second half of the nineteenth century when these studies were finally resumed causing them to flourish. With folding map mounted on Japanese paper and 8 engraved plates 3 folding. 22210 pp. First Dutch edition. - The treatise by the scholar Job Hiob Ludolf 1624-1704 was first published in Latin Historia Aethiopica in 1681 and is regarded as the first authoritative account of Abyssinia. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome himself clearly a highly intelligent man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding map by Tellez is a landmark of cartography as it is the first to show the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna a banana plant decapitation of missionnaries etc. A monumental work on Ethiopia dealing with its history inhabitants natural history language and literature. It is the most illustrious name in Ethiopic scholarship. - Owner's name on title-page; partly dampstaining slight browning stronger to one quire. - Rare Dutch edition. Tiele 702; Cat.
