Half-title and title page printed red and black about 30 full page coloured illustrations a couple of double page spreads and numerous other coloured illustrations in the text. Lower cover lightly soiled and water stained with horizontal 'string' groove see image 5 spine gilt dull head and tail of spine and corners slightly rubbed. A few tiny chips to gilt on title on upper cover otherwise very bright contents in very good condition. Half-title: France Son Histoire Jusqu'en 1789. On the front pastedown is the small bookplate of Ruari McLean 1917-2006 celebrated typographic designer and historian of book design and bindings. Bilderwelt No. 1275. This title was later reissued with La Cantiniere or Les Trois Couleurs and eventually all 3 titles were published together. The price reflects the slight damage to the lower cover. Boivin released three different editions of this work in the years 1897 1898 and 1901 each with different covers. The full title was "France Son Histoire Jusqu'en 1789" and this aptly describes the contents of the work so it is assumed that the latter part of the title was lopped off in a later printing. ‎Paris: Charavay Martoux the first two works. Charavay Martin the third work. Edouard Crete printer. Half Morocco Marbled Boards. Good. Folio 14 by 11.5 inches 36 by 30 cm. N.d. circa 1900. Rebacked with the original morocco spine mounted onto skiver. The skiver though being a different shade of red is conspicuous along the entire front joint and at the lower end in particular the reattachment looks clumsy. The leather of the spine has heavily rubbed with dry chipping at the extremities. The leaves within are heavily age toned and a bit brittle with some marginal chipping. A few tape repairs. The leaves of the three volumes are not exactly even and so this comes off similar to many a sammelbund. ‎Germany 12th century. 272 x 185 mm. 10 3/4 x 7 1/4". Single column 28 lines in a late Caroline hand. <br/> ◆Leaf trimmed irregularly along one side about 18 lines lacking a letter or two vellum a bit wrinkled and worn text a little faded in places but still very presentable and the text almost entirely legible.<br/> <br/> Penned in a pleasing and very legible late Caroline hand this leaf has sustained very little loss and is remarkably well preserved for having been previously reused as binding scrap. Although the text includes several abbreviations that are commonly found in proto-gothic scripts the hand also shares a number of similarities with the Caroline minuscule that dominated Western Europe scribal hands in earlier periods including a long "s" with the shaft on the line and the use of the ampersand as a general abbreviation for the letters "et" occurring anywhere in a word. The text here comes from Pope Gregory the Great's "Moralia" conceived as a commentary on the book of Job and begun when Gregory was just a young papal envoy to Constantinople. It is a guide to the Christian life written in simple direct language which transforms the thought of Augustine into a practical manual of behavior. unknown‎
