Amédée Guillemin was a French science writer and a journalist. Guillemin started his studies at Beaune college before taking his final degree in Paris. From 1850 to 1860 he taught mathematics in a private school while writing articles for the Liberal press criticizing the Second French Empire. In 1860, he moved to Chambéry where he became a junior deputy editor of the weekly political magazine La Savoie. After the annexation of Savoy by the French empire, he returned to Paris where he became the science editor of l'Avenir national (The Nation's Future). Guillemin presently started writing books of physics and astronomy which became very popular. He wrote "The Sky" which was translated into many languages. His major work, "The Physical World", consisted of five large volumes. His publisher, Hachette, encouraged him to write a series of booklets about astronomy and physics under the title "Small popular encyclopaedia", a scientifically sound but accessible collection about sciences and their applications. French astronomer Jacques Crovisier from the Observatoire de Paris suggests he may have been a source of inspiration for Jules Verne's 1865 novel, From the Earth to the Moon. Charles Auguste Briot was a French mathematician who worked on elliptic functions. The Académie des Sciences awarded him the Poncelet Prize in 1882. Anton then decided to take the leap and started his own business opening his workshop in his hometown Melsele where he grew up and is strongly connected to the cultural life. From 2013 till 2015 Anton Somers and his former employer tried to work together again, but now as chef d'atelier, in the workshop premises of Anton in Melsele. where he worked meanwhile on his own account. One can see finally an output of high quality instruments under his own name, with his own models and with his own varnish, which lead to a boost in his career. In September 2016 Anton also took on the challenge to work as a teacher in the violin making school of Antwerp ILSA. Sharing his knowledge for 5 years, he stopped teaching at the end of 2021 to be able to fully focus on his career. In December 2016 Anton received a Coup du Coeur in the violin making competition ?Violoncellenseine? in Paris which was dedicated to the cello. The cello was specially awarded for his tonality qualities by renowned cellist Damian Martinez Marco. In 2020 Anton was selected by Andy Lim personally to serve as one of the five supervisors for the 3-year string sextet project, where 24 last year student/ recently graduated violinmakers will make 2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. Anton has the honour and the challenge to supervice the making of 2 cellos. In 2021 Anton made a string quartet containing completely CITES certified whalebone purflings. Exemplaire bien complet de ses 24 planches, dont 18 représentent de nombreux instruments chirurgicaux, notamment la "chaise chirurgicale", et 6 figurent des hermaphrodites. Ex-libris « Chir. Bibliothèque de F. Fristo (?) Médecin à Sierck Janvier 1813 » encollé au dos de la page de titre. Malgré quelques répétitions de pagination et de numérotation de feuillets entre les deux parties (avis au relieur, fautes à corriger, additions et changemens, etc), cet exemplaire est bien complet. Georges Arnaud de Ronsil (1698-1774), formé à l'Ecole Saint Côme à Paris, s'établit ensuite à Londres où il acquiert une réputation de chirurgien brillant, spécialiste des anévrismes, des malformations des parties génitales (d'où ses recherches sur l'hermaphrodisme), ou encore des hernies. En 1768, c'est en technicien qu'il présente à l'Académie royale de chirurgie de Paris (dont il était membre également), un ingénieux modèle de chaise chirurgicale, laquelle offrait au praticien "le choix d’opérer par devant, par derrière ou sur le côté, sans avoir besoin de personne pour tenir le Malade". Ainsi cet outil innovant se destinait-il à augmenter la précision des opérations, tout en réduisant leur durée et potentiellement, la souffrance des patients. On ignore si la chaise, décrite sur plusieurs dessins, avec cotes de construction et de nombreux accessoires, fut construite et utilisée, mais cette initiative pour éloigner la chirurgie de "l'ancienne barbarie", avant l'invention des anesthésiants au XIXe siècle, reçut alors de nombreuses louanges.‎

Marie-Auguste Massacrié-Durand was a French music publisher, organist, and composer. Durand was born in Paris and studied at the Paris Conservatoire with François Benoist. He started as an organist in 1849 in Saint-Ambroise, then at St. Genevieve, St. Roch and St. Vincent de Paul (1862-74). Together with Louis Schoenewerk and other sponsors, Durand founded the company Durand-Schoenewerk & Cie. in December 1869 and acquired the important catalogue of the Paris music publisher Gustave Flaxland (1821-1895), which had grown from approximately 1,200 titles in 1847 to 1,400 titles in 1869. This included the French rights to the early Wagner operas. Following a dispute, the company dissolved on 18 March 1885 and was sold at auction in May 1896. Auguste Durand and Louis Schoenewerk bought the firm in its entirety, and they reconstituted the company with Durand's son Jacques (1865-1928). In November 1891, Jacques replaced Schoenewerk and the name changed to A. Durand & fils. Jacques assumed control of the company in 1909 when his father died, and brought in his cousin Gaston Choisnel (d. 1921) as a partner. Durand became an expert in the publication of works by French composers including Victorin de Joncières, Edouard Lalo, Jules Massenet, Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns, Maurice Ravel, Albert Roussel and Paul Dukas. The company also published the French editions of Tannhäuser, The Flying Dutchman and Lohengrin by Richard Wagner and many editions of old masters including, in particular, a complete critical edition of Rameau edited under the initial direction of Saint-Saëns. Between 1910 and 1913, Auguste and, after his death, his son Jacques organised concerts to raise awareness of new music. In 1914, Jacques published under the title Édition classique Durand & fils important nineteenth-century works for piano including the music of Chopin edited by Debussy, of Mendelssohn by Ravel and of Schumann by Gabriel Fauré. Christides published on almost all the areas of music under the captions in Greek and Ottoman languages. He published some various Turkish marches and operets' scores besides Western music.
