Printed gold foil softcovers minor scuffing still VG- copy both originally owned by Valina M. Coffin 1890-1979 a music school teacher in Newport public schools from before World War I until the 1950s with mailing label addressed to her on outside of packaging. First edition thus of this very scarce and complete educational exhibit promotional kit from the Victor Talking Machine Co. which was designed to help students RCA Victor record purchasers and musical instrument customers identify the “Tone†of instruments with their “Appearance.†Educational sales kits quite similar to these were also used by silk and textiles manufacturers at the time and were typically sold through company sales departments or retail outlets. The first poster includes a printed photo of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra by Bell & Fischer followed by those illustrating the assorted instruments and the musicians of the orchestra properly playing their harp violin viola violoncello double bass flute & piccolo oboe English horn clarinet bass clarinet bassoon contrabassoon trumpet French horn trombone tuba kettledrums castenets xylophone chimes and even a marimba. The accompanying handbook provides specific details to the sizes operation and tonality of each of the instruments depicted in the posters. The Victor Talking Machine Co. established the Educational Department in 1911 under the direction of Mrs. Frances Elliott Clark former Music Supervisor of Public Schools in Monmouth IL and then Milwaukee WI. Louis Geissler felt that it was important for the company to build a demand for recorded music by developing an early interest in playing and appreciating musical instruments and music and using RCA Victor records to do so.
