On sait que lastrolabe est une « mise à plat » de la sphère céleste observée à partir de son pôle sud. Il permet, grâce à ses lignes gravées, détablir et de prévoir le cheminement des astres, de déterminer lheure du jour et de la nuit, la latitude du lieu, mais aussi une hauteur quelconque, une orientation. Inventé, semble t-il, à lépoque de Ptolémée, il a été perfectionné par les Arabes, tout dabord en Syrie sous les Omeyyades, plus tard en Irak à la faveur de lactivité scientifique patronnée par le calife al-Mamûn (r. 813-833). En Espagne musulmane, pendant le Califat de Cordoue, il sera commenté par Maslama al-Majrîtî. Pour se servir dun astrolabe, il faut le tenir à la verticale à hauteur de lil. Au dos de linstrument se trouve une règle pivotante (lalidade), munie de deux trous. Cest dans lalignement de ces deux trous quon fait passer le rayon de lastre quon observe (cest la visée), la lecture en degrés se faisant sur le pourtour de lastrolabe garni de divisions. Selon la hauteur de lastre, on fera pivoter laraignée qui se trouve sur lautre face de linstrument, de façon à la mettre en correspondance. Laraignée est ce disque très découpé, muni dindex pointés sur les étoiles fixes de la voûte céleste et qui comprend également une couronne zodiacale. Cest donc toute la voûte céleste avec ses étoiles principales et son zodiaque que lon met en harmonie avec le moment de la visée. En dessous de laraignée, une plaque quon appelle le tympan porte des cercles et des courbes : cest le cheminement circulaire des étoiles selon leur hauteur et selon langle quelles font avec le méridien terrestre. Lastrolabe qui nous occupe comporte des éléments étranges. Toutes ses inscriptions sont en latin. À première vue, il semble avoir été construit en Europe chrétienne. Sur son araignée, les index aux pointes rigides indiquent dix-huit étoiles : dix boréales et huit australes (cest-à-dire situées sous le cercle médian de lÉquateur). Onze dentre elles sont en place pour une époque voisine de 980. Toutefois, aucun nom détoile na été gravé sur les index. Sur lun des tympans figurent les noms ROMA et FRANCIA en capitales romaines, accompagnées de lettres numérales ayant une valeur de 41-30. Ces capitales sont similaires à celles employées à la fin du Xe siècle dans les manuscrits latins de la Catalogne, laquelle à cette époque faisait partie de la France carolingienne. Le nom de « FRANCIA » séclaire alors. Quant à 41° 30, cest lindication dune latitude qui, à quelques minutes près, est celle de Barcelone. Toutefois, aux alentours de lAn Mil, les connaissances en astronomie sont bien trop imprécises en Occident latin pour permettre la construction dun astrolabe. On se trouverait donc en présence dun instrument fabriqué en Espagne musulmane, laissé « en blanc » et complété dans les monastères bénédictins de la Catalogne - Vic, Sant Gugat del Vallès, Ripoll - lesquels entretenaient des relations avec des mozarabes, des juifs ou des musulmans dAndalousie. Parmi les moines érudits de cette époque, citons Llobet, dit «Lupitus», archidiacre de Barcelone, qui rédige un des premiers traités sur lastrolabe où se devine linfluence du cordouan Maslama al-Majrîtî et de liranien al-Khwârizmî. Ces contacts multi-culturels apparaissent dans linstrument à plusieurs endroits : certaines lettres numérales délaissent les valeurs de lAntiquité pour labjad (système de correspondance alphanumérique). Nous sommes exactement à lépoque où le moine Gerbert dAurillac, futur pape Sylvestre II, se rend dAuvergne en Catalogne pour étudier les mathématiques et lastronomie. Cest par le biais de lEspagne du Nord et par tout un enchaînement de relais entre monastères et écoles-cathédrales, que cette science de lastrolabe, si avancée en pays musulmans, pénètrera en Occident latin.
