PUGIN Augustus & ROWLANDSON Thomas illustrators.
The Microcosm of London.
London R. Ackermann 1808-1810. . Three volumes quarto 33.5 x 26.4 cm. Half-titles wood-engraved titles engraved dedications 104 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Bluck Stadler and others after Pugin and Rowlandson. Light offsets and a few spots and stains to plates offsetting to text and some light browning in earlier part some soiling of plate margins scattered stains to a few leaves in vol. I I3 of vol. III creased. Contemporary diced Russia covers with gilt-ruled and palmette borders marbled endpapers and edges rebacked preserving old spines. Early issue of this brilliantly conceived collaborative work between Pugin and Rowlandson the former providing the architectural designs the latter the 'artfully disposed' human figures on the plates. Newgate Chapel with 1801 watermark; other plates watermarked 1807-08. Originally issued in 26 monthly parts. The Microcosm was the first major colour plate book published by the celebrated nineteenth century publisher Rudolph Ackermann 1764-1834. It originally appeared in monthly parts usually by subscription between 1808 and 1810. Each issue cost seven shillings and included four coloured plates. It later appeared in its final bound folio format of three volumes each containing over thirty full-page hand-coloured aquatints depicting London's principal buildings in the nineteenth century. The Microcosm was a new undertaking in that it treated Regency London pictorially and ranged over new and ancient buildings and meeting places capturing the mood of London at the time. Life in London during the Regency era was distinctive for its architecture literature fashions and politics. Socially it was a combination of two extremes with extravagance and opulence for the aristocracy with their affluent buildings to the overcrowded slums and poverty endured by the poor. It was an era of economic uncertainty caused by the Napoleonic Wars and social unrest due to the Industrial Revolution and its introduction of machine-based labour over manual labour. The three volumes are laid out in the form of a dictionary with the buildings listed alphabetically for ease of reference. From the introduction Ackermann puts forward his intentions in producing such a work. It is aimed at those inhabitants of London who are either too busy to appreciate the architecture surrounding them or those who are largely familiar with it but not in great detail. It would also appeal to visitors to the city for the first time as a source of reference. Two-thirds of the buildings included no longer exist which adds to its appeal today. These include The Pillory The Old Bailey King's Bench Prison Royal Cockpit in Birdcage Walk Brooks' Subscription House India House of Charles Lamb and King's Mews now the National Gallery. University of Reading. Pugin supplied the architectural drawings which have an accuracy and serene beauty which provide the perfect contrast to Rowlandson's figures of the population of London engaged in their everyday life. 'The most magnificent book in artistic scope admirable from its encyclopaedic readiness to guide us through all aspects of life concealing little was the Microcosm of London. A good copy of the Microcosm is a fine work indeed first among Ackermann's major books a notion of all London open to view the world of poor or rich wretched or mighty. The London book was a true Microcosm: charities churches prisons fairs courts markets theatres hospitals. The alphabetic order of appearance was more effective than more obvious divisions. for we have them mixed the book like life' Franklin. Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7; Prideaux pp121-4. Franklin 49-54; Ray 33. London, R. Ackermann, [1808-1810]. unknown

The most popular it sold 604884 copies during the two years 1914-1916 that is was in print. Rackham Arthur. Louis Wain Mary Gladwin illustrators
Cats at Play
London: John F. Shaw 1904. First edition. Publisher's quarter decorated cloth over full-color glazed pictorial boards corners a little worn.Small quarto 9 5/8 x 7 1/8 in; 245 x 180 mm. A few illustrations hand-colored by a child. Closed tear to bottom edge of page. 17. Early ink presentation dated "Christmas 1905" on front paste-down. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color with fifteen drawings by Louis Wain and an unrecorded text drawing by Arthur Rackham so initialed on page 40. Unrecorded and scarce with no copies noted in the Wain or Rackham bibliographies.

Anytime an unrecorded book illustration by Arthur Rackham comes to light it's an item for collectors to note. Buried within this book unheralded on page forty is a black and white text illustration of four chickens in various states of distress as they observe in high dudgeon and with no little annoyance a cat within their food bucket chowing down the chicken feed. And at the lower left of the bucket as small as can be are Rackham's initials as typically drawn. Latimore and Haskell and Riall make no mention of this illustration in their Rackham bibliographies and the Arthur Rackham Society expressed no knowledge of it when we inquired. A true scarcity -- a previously unknown Rackham during his transitional period when his fairies and goblins were emerging but had not yet fully vanquished the simple pay-the-bills work of his early years.

Cf. Kiddies' Favourite Book / Kiddies' Jolly Book / Kiddies' Cheery Book / Kiddies' Wonder Book / Kiddies' Happy Book
London & Glasgow: Collins' Clear Type Press These is a set of five books in Collins "Kiddies'" series. There books don't include a publication date but the art and materials suggests a 1920s printing. The pages are clean and tight but have darkened noticeably. The stapled cardboard covers are in Very Good condition with light edgewear and bumps a few folds and some handling. The staples holding the binding have rusted but are still holding firmly. E. Dorothy Rees is identified as the artist who did the cover for "Kiddies' Jolly Book" and the similarity of style makes it likely that she did the covers for all. Joan Hoyle did many of the internal black and white illustrations. A nice set. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Collins' Clear Type Press Paperback

REMINGTON Frederic AB. FROST and others illustrators AC. GOULD editor A. B. A. C.
Sport or Fishing and Shooting
Boston: Bradlee Whidden 1869. Folio. 15 chromolithographic plates after Frederic Remington A.B. Frost Fred Cozzens R.F. Zogbaum Henry Sandham and others. 32 ff. letterpress. Expertly bound to style in full dark purple straight grained morocco.

A rare large-format work on sport in late 19th-century America including Frederic Remington's first two published prints in color a rare A.B.Frost image of deer-hunting and images from Fred. S.Cozzens and other top illustrators of the day.

The present work includes six angling plates three of fly-fishing four plates of game-bird hunting and five of hunting larger game. Each of the fifteen subjects is first described in general terms on a single leaf of text followed by a second leaf giving a first-hand account of catching or shooting the subject followed by a chromolithograph illustrating the first-hand account. According to Gould's preface the plates are all from water-colours especially commissioned for the work which were subjected to the critical scrutiny of a group of anglers/sportsmen who judged them for technical accuracy. The plates are as follows: 1. Killing the Salmon. Henry Sandham. 2. A Moose hunt. Henry Sandham. 3. Trout fishing. Henry Sandham. 4. Fly-fishing for Black Bass. S.F. Denton. 5. Hunting Antelope i.e. Prong-horn. Frederic Remington. 6. Catching a Tarpon. Fred. S. Cozzens. 7. Mallard shooting. S.F. Denton. 8. Catching a Mascalonge. Frank H. Taylor. 9. A Wild Turkey hunt. R.J. Zogbaum. 10. Sailing for Bluefish. Fred S.Cozzens. 11. Hunting the Virginia Deer. A.B. Frost. 12. A day with the Prairie Chickens. R.F. Zogbaum. 13. A hunt above the timber-line Big-horn. Edward Knobel. 14. Canada Goose shooting. Frederic Remington. 15. Stalking the Wapiti. Henry Sandham. The two plates by Frederic Remington Hunting Antelope Hassrick & Webster 434 and Goose Shooting Hassrick & Webster 435 are also listed by Peggy and Harold Samuels Remington The Complete Prints New York 1990 pp.152-3 with the comment that they are the first and second Remington prints to appear in color. They were preceded only by a series of four monochrome photogravures for John Muir's Picturesque California 1888 and two other individual prints both black and white. Arthur Burdett Frost is now perhaps best known for his sporting pictures and prints but an aversion to deer-hunting meant that he rarely pictured shooting scenes that featured anything other than small game. His image Hunting the Deer is recorded and illustrated in Henry M.Reed's The A.B.Frost Book Charleston 1993 pp.101 104-5 but the author was apparently unaware that it was issued as part of the present work which is not included in the extensive appendix of books illustrated by Frost.

Phillips p. 141; Wetzel p. 146; Sherwin sale 1946 lot 238; Bruns G120; Heller 1:502; Bennett p.48; Tyler Prints of the West pp.127 & 174; not in Reese Stamped with a National Character. Rockwell, Norman
Rockwell on Rockwell: How I Make a Picture
176 pages. Index. "When Norman Rockwell was at the height of his career in the late 1940's, he wrote a delightful book called How I Make a Picture. It was the basis for an advanced illustration course at the Famous Artists School, but was never made available to the general public. We are now delighted to have this unique opportunity to make Rockwell's original book available for the first time in an expanded version, containing full-color reproductions of the artists best work along with previously unpublished color sketches." - from Publisher's Note. Book clean and unmarked with light wear. Average wear to dust jacket which bears some staining and a taped repair to bottom edge of back panel. A sound copy of this special book. Please note: we believe the ISBN stated on the publisher's page of this copy, 083202380x, is incorrect and have changed it to what we believe is the correct number. Book
