Provenance : bibliothèque du poète Armand Godoy.   Cette pieuse dédicace rédigée sur l'ouvrage d'un tiers réunit sous son apparente humilité toute franciscaine les trois composantes essentielles de l'âme romantique de Liszt : le mysticisme l'art et surtout l'amour. Figure fondatrice de l'osmose entre l'homme et la nature Saint-François d'Assise séduit très tôt les Romantiques en quête d'icône médiévale. Chateaubriand lui consacre de très belles pages du second volume des Mémoires d'outre-tombe Hugo Lamartine Vigny s'en inspirent et Liszt qui rejoint l'ordre franciscain en 1865 compose plusieurs Âœuvres qui lui sont dédiées dont le Cantico del sol di Francesco d'Assisi et Saint-François la prédication aux oiseaux toutes deux contemporaines de l'ouvrage d'Anatole de Ségur que Liszt offre à la comtesse de Fleury. Le Poëme de Saint-François constitue d'ailleurs un des premiers ouvrages consacrés au « Poverello » qui connut plusieurs siècles de désaveu avant cette renaissance Romantique. Liszt très attentif aux études et représentations artistiques de Saint-François conservera dans sa bibliothèque plusieurs ouvrages d'importance sur les Franciscains dont un exemplaire de cette vie du Saint dédicacé par Ségur à « l'abbé Liszt » en « hommage de reconnaissante admiration » l'ouvrage fut référencé dans la bibliothèque de Liszt après sa mort. Alliant spiritualité et poésie cette hagiographie en vers ne pouvait que séduire le compositeur des Harmonies poétiques et religieuses tout juste ordonné clerc des frères mineurs. Pourtant ce pieux ex-dono d'un « pauvre franciscain » à une comtesse elle-même dévote retirée du monde ranime un feu plus ancien et sulfureux qui consuma la jeunesse de l'auteur des Réminiscences de Robert le diable et des Méphisto-valses. La « Comtesse de Fleury » est en réalité « Duchesse » de Fleury mais Liszt la connut surtout sous le titre de Comtesse puisque lorsqu'il la rencontre en janvier 1831 dans un Salon parisien Adèle-Joséphine Quarré de Chelers est alors la comtesse Adèle de La Prunarède. Après une importante crise mystique Liszt âgé de dix-neuf ans connaît alors ses premiers émois amoureux. Si « on sait peu de choses sur ces diverses aventures sentimentales . un nom se détache toutefois de cette succession d'amourettes : celui de la comtesse Adèle de la Prunarède » cf. Serge Gut in Correspondance Franz Liszt et Marie d'Agoult. Cette « capiteuse personne » de quinze ans son aînée fut ainsi la première liaison véritable du jeune compositeur. « à peine six mois après être sortie de sa léthargie contemplative Liszt se plongeait dans les délices et les tourments de la passion sensuelle et fiévreuse » op. cit. qui ne sera interrompue qu'en 1832 par la rencontre avec Marie d'Agoult. Bien que Liszt ait passé avec Adèle plusieurs mois dans le château de Marlioz en Haute-Savoie cette relation reste mal connue des biographes et historiens. Pourtant l'importance de cette amante est attestée par la vive jalousie qu'elle inspirera à Marie d'Agoult tout au long de sa relation avec Liszt comme en témoignent sa correspondance et son journal. Dès les premières années les lettres de Liszt et de Marie d'Agoult sont traversées par ce fantôme menaçant. Les craintes de Marie d'Agoult qui souffre du passé galant de Liszt se portent particulièrement sur Adèle la seule à n'être citée que par son prénom. Malgré les soins de Marie pour ne pas laisser paraître ses sentiments les réponses de Liszt sont explicites : « Mlle Boscary épouse Miramon j'en suis content. Adèle à Genève est écrasée de douleur. Cela aussi est bien. ». La réponse de Marie d'Agoult est entièrement mutilée du passage concernant Adèle : « Parlez-moi d'Adèle. Que peut-on donc encore lui faire souffrir. Vous savez que je l'aime » la suite est découpée comme souvent pour les passages trop délicats. Dans les lettres du couple entre 1833 et 1834 les références à cette Adèle sont aussi fréquentes qu'énigmatiques : « Il est en votre pouvoir de me rendre un immense service ; ma pauvre et misérable destinée est entre vos mains . ce n'est point de vous ni de moi qu'il s'agit mais d'Adèle » Liszt à Marie août 1833. En mai 1834 répondant à une demande explicite : « dites-moi ce que vous avez écrit à Adèle » Liszt confirme à Marie d'Agoult ses craintes au sujet de l'affection qu'il porte à Adèle :   « J'ai cru mieux de ne pas lui répondre à présent. . Le besoin de la voir de lui parler du profond de l'âme me tourmente quelquefois. mais rarement. ». Peu après une nouvelle crise de jalousie de Marie contraint Liszt à revenir une fois encore sur sa douloureuse rupture avec Adèle :  « Temps de lutte d'angoisse et de tourments solitaires - temps où je brisais détruisais anéantissais violemment l'amour d'Adèle. C'est alors que j'écrivais : je suis et je voudrais n'être pas - je dois souffrir souffrir seul. » De lettre en lettre il confie à Marie ses regrets coupables : « Je n'ai été qu'un lâche et misérable poltron Liszt souligne ces deux mots pour Adèle ». Puis il redevient cruel : « Qu'ai-je à lui dire . et ce que je lui dirais le comprendrait-elle    » parfois sarcastique : « Wolf m'a raconté une petite histoire scandaleuse de Mr Ginestous et d'Adèle. Il y a pour dénouement des coups de cravache humblement endurés par Adèle . Cela m'a amusé. ». Certaines missives paraissent même cyniques comme ici à propos d'une autre conquête éconduite : « Je l'entendais qui me criait du fond des entrailles : ""Aimez-moi sauvez-moi"" comme autrefois Adèle. ». Adèle semble disparaître un temps de la vie de Liszt et d'Agoult mais en 1837 lors de leur installation en Italie sa présence dans le pays inquiète immédiatement Marie elle avait l'année précédente déjà noté dans son journal le « Pèlerinage d'Adèle à Rome » : « Mme Pictet saurait-elle dans quelle ville d'Italie se trouve à l'heure qu'il est . Mme de la Prunarède  » Lettre à A. Pictet octobre 1837 Dès lors et jusqu'à leur rupture en 1839 la proximité de cette rivale sera une constante menace pour le couple : « Mme de la Prunarède est ici avec les Cadore. Elle est séparée de son mari et se partage entre les amants et les confesseurs. » Lettre à Louis de Ronchaux Rome 18 mars 1839   Durant leur séjour commun en Italie Marie évite de croiser Adèle mais sa correspondance témoigne que Liszt à son grand dam la fréquentait plus assidûment. Ainsi cette lettre amère adressée à Adèle en juillet 1839 : « Ainsi que vous disiez hier à Franz vous êtes très considérée dans le monde. Ce même monde qui vous considère ne me considère pas du tout et ce qui est plus épouvantable c'est que je ne m'en soucie en aucune façon. . Cette considération que vous avez acquise est le fruit d'une certaine prudence qu'il ne faut pas compromettre en la heurtant au choc de mon insolite sincérité. à la vérité ! on dit aussi que vous convertissez les pécheurs que vous marchez victorieusement dans les voies du salut entraînant avec vous les âmes subjuguées. Peut-être subirais-je comme d'autres l'éloquence irrésistible de vos beaux yeux bleus je crains que non pourtant. » Peu après son journal nous révèle clairement la crainte que ce premier amour de Liszt provoque encore chez Marie : « Adèle vient . Je la reçois dans ma chambre. Mon cÂœur battait horriblement. Je me remets en la regardant. Elle est horriblement changée. Sa taille est déformée ses yeux louches ses traits grossis son teint brouillé. Elle a l'air excessivement faux. . Franz la croit grosse. » Journal juillet 1839 in Marie D'Agoult Correspondance Générale Tome II Mais plus encore que la beauté d'Adèle ce qui effraie Marie c'est son mysticisme.
