The Secret of Heroism: A Memoir of Henry Albert Harper MacKenzie signed
New York: Fleming H. Revell Company 1906. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. SIGNED WLMK PRESENTATION COPY 2nd edition. 12mo. 161pp. The book is inscribed by W.L. MacKenzie King on the front free endpaper at Ottawa in 1911. Olive cloth lettered in gilt 161 pages. Some light external wear including some rubbing to the spine ends good hinges clean pages free from other names or markings. Untrimmed deckle paper edges a couple of pages with small corner folds. Book is in very good condition otherwise. The first book written by Canada's politician William Lyon Mackenzie King later to become Canada's tenth Prime Minister. Presentation copy inscription: To Russell George Halstead With the best wishes of his friend WL MacKenzie King Ottawa March 27-11" Halstead was born on 3 Dec. 1895 at Waterloo Ontario. He married Grace Louisa Sykes on 27 June 1923 in Alberta. This is the story King's good friend Henry Albert "Bert" Harper 1873-1901 who saved a young girl's life but lost his own. "Bert" had also began courting King's younger sister Jennie in 1900. King participated in a public subscription to raise a statue in Harper's honour and who was the inspiration for the statue of Sir Galahad which stands before the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. The young woman Bessie Blair fell through the ice of the Ottawa River. Harper's death affected King greatly and the result was this first book. "He knew the importance of earning a reputation for being non-partisan and with the help of his university friend Henry Albert "Bert" Harper whom he appointed assistant editor the Labour Gazette soon became a respected reference" "In the Gatineau hills of Quebec north of Ottawa he and Bert Harper had long walks were enchanted by the area around Lac Kingsmere read uplifting literature and shared their spiritual concerns. Their friendship ended in December 1901 when Harper died trying to save a young woman from drowning. Typed letter signed dated Ottawa February 12 1938 on Office of the Prime Minister stationery to Emanuel Hertz Counsellor at Law New York marked 'Personal'.
Ottawa: 1938. Written during King's third term as Prime Minister 1938-48. King thanks Hertz for a copy of his book 'The Hidden Lincoln' but regrets that he is unable to provide a personal review as requested in Hertz's letter of January 18. "When I saw mention in the press of your new book I had already expressed my desire to secure a copy for perusal as opportunity might afford. It was therefore with quite exceptional pleasure that I received the copy which came from The Macmillan Company by direction of the author himself." "There are two reasons which make it a little difficult for me to comply with the request of your letter. One is that with Parliament in session I have little or no time for reading apart from the questions which necessitate immediate attention. The other and more formidable obstacle is that I have made it a rule in the occupancy of my present position to limit as much as possible the writing of communications to be used for the purposes of advertising. This chiefly because of what it necessarily involves in the way of invidious discrimination between the many requests received." Mackenzie King grandson of William Lyon Mackenzie served as the 10th Canadian Prime Minister in 1921-26 1926-1930 and 1935 to 1948 spanning the Roaring 20s end of the Great Depression World War II and reconstruction. He was leader of the Liberal Party for 29 years and with 21 years and 154 days in office he was the longest serving Prime Minister in Canadian history. The King administration saw major advances in international status leading to the Statute of Westminster which essentially recognized the independence of Canada the creation of a Canadian citizenship 1947 and the establishment of Old Age pensions 1927 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation 1936 Air Canada 1937 the National Film Board 1939 Unemployment Insurance 1940 and Family Allowances 1945. 8vo. 2 leaves typed on recto only. with posted envelope. 1 horizontal fold Ottawa: 1938 unknown

London 1941. No binding. Good. 7 x 5 inches. Black & White press photo. 1941 Sir Winston Churchill & W.L.MacKenzie King PM photograph at 10 Downing Street 8/26/1941. On back is the press photo markings and stamps. Some wrinkling of photo along bottom good condition otherwise. A scarce and warm photograph of two great leaders early during the second World War - a very nice collectable. King and Churchill met first in 1900 in Ottawa while Churchill was on a lecture tour and the last meeting was in London in 1948. They grew to respect each other's friendship and accomplishments. Mackenzie King flew to London in August 1941 and attended a War Cabinet meeting. He records his fascination at Churchill's ability to summarise situations in graphic phrases: "He has a wonderful command of language and knowledge of history which he uses freely and an ability to keep looking ahead making decisions in the light of the long run rather than the short one." Bruce Hutchinson in The Prime Ministers refers to this last meeting which Lord Beaverbrook had described to him: "Churchill as he rose to leave was surprised by a last request from the patient.
