Parmi les différents sujets traités dans les sept « livres » les maladies et la santé sont des sujets fréquemment abordés, l'auteur ayant peut-être été médecin de Charles Quint. Mais Pierre MESSIE aborde tous les sujets à la manière d'un encyclopédiste, et vu son haut niveau de réflexion et d'érudition il s'adresse manifestement à un public de lecteurs exigeants. Il est dit que Montaigne eut été de ses lecteurs. Bon
