1942. No binding. Typed Letter Signed TLS 8 x 10 inches from Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King dated July 13 1942 on black Prime Minister letterhead to Alex D. Bruce Unionville Ontario - re death of mutual friend George Brodie helped in elections and the death of Mrs. Bruce. Letter content marked "personal" by King on the top of the letterhead starts out with King not realizing his friend George Brodie has died and thanks his other friend Alex D. Bruce for letting him know. King goes on to state that "the invaluable assistance given you by Mr. Brodie in the 1921 campaign at which time your or I shall always believe were more instrumental than anyone else in carrying the day for me." King mentions perhaps how appropriate about the Brodie "dropped in the field" as a way to go and "leaves one little for one to regret". King states he does regret however the passing of Mrs. Bruce on the 3rd of March last but here too this is the first he believes he has heard of her death and gives his apologies for this. King recalls how zealous Mrs. Bruce was like Mr. Bruce and states "you have my in fullest measure my deepest sympathy. Do please believe me that I feel very deeply for you". Signed WL MacKenzie King. George Alexander Brodie 1869-1942 and WLMK had a strong relationship and King sought his advice on how people felt in his riding. WLMK's personal diaries make mention of one meeting in particular on Saturday Dec. 27 1919 where Brodie travels from Toronto to Ottawa to meet with King twice during the day and dined with him at the Rideau Club. King's diary describes Mr. & Mrs. Brodie's continued support in North York and provide assurances that the U.F.O. United Farmers of Ontario were behind King. King states "I was genuinely touched by this evidence of friendship". Alex. D. Bruce 1868-1956 was a miller in Carrick Mills Ontario long time Liberal supporter author local historian and President of the Bethesda and Stouffville Telephone Company. He married Married Louise Eastwood 1857-1942. Carrick Mill: In 1842 William and Robert Bruce Alex's father bought the mill and some adjoining property and changed the name of the mill to Carrick Mills in honour of Robert the Bruce Earl of Carrick. For 21 years in total W.L. MacKenzie King was Canada's prime minister. He was the longest serving Prime Minister in British Commonwealth history. His decisions during this time contributed significantly to the shaping of Canada and to its development as an influential middle power in world affairs.
