Captain G. F. Lyon RN. R. N.
A Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa in the Years 1818 19 and 20; Accompanied by Geographical Notices of Soudan and of the Course of the Niger with a Chart of the Routes and a Variety of Coloured Plates Illustrative of the Costumes of the Several Natives of Northern Africa
Albemarle Street London: John Murray 1821. 1st Edition. Hardcover. George Francis Lyon 1795 - 1832 was an Arctic and African explorer. In 1818 he was sent with Joseph Ritchie by Sir John Barrow to find the course of the Niger River and the location of Timbuktu. A year later they had only got as far as Murzouk where they both fell ill. Ritchie never recovered and died there but Lyon survived and traveled further around the region. A year after he left he arrived back in Tripoli the expedition being a complete failure. This book recounts details of that expedition. Upon return he was promoted and in 1821 - the same year this book was published - given the command of HMS Hecla on his second attempt. Lyon was reputed to have genuine informed interest in the culture and inhabitants of the lands he visited. Wearing Arab/Muslim dress and learning fluent Arabic he managed to blend in with the inhabitants of North Africa. In the Arctic he was tattooed by the Inuit and ate raw caribou and seal meat with them. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1827. This volume features the original half leather binding over marbled boards with leather corners marbled page edges and marbled endpapers. The contents are superior - clean and bright with only light intermittent spotting. The large folding map and all 17 hand-colored plates are present. The only previous ownership marking are some collector notes in pencil on the ffep and a stamp stating "Withdrawn" from "The James Humphreys Collection" on the title page verso. The original binding is preserved but considerably worn at the edges. The hinges are split and bear a crude leather overlay reinforcement at the top and bottom of the spine which keeps the boards attached to the binding.

John Murray hardcover

Geller Uri and Guy Lyon Playfair
The Geller Effect
NY: Henry Holt 1986. 1st American Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Hardcover: 288 pages Publisher: Henry Holt & Co1st Americanedition March 1987 Language: English ISBN-10: 0805004653 ISBN-13: 978-0805004656 Product Dimensions: 8.3 x 5.7 x 1.1 inches Shipping Weight: 1.1 poundsThe return of Uri Geller finds him more charming and self-confident than ever. In the mid-70's the world-famous spoon-bender dropped out of sight in part to become a dowser or gold prospector for rich companies intent on mining the Brazilian jungles and the Solomon Islands and also to help the South Koreans discover a vast tunnel network being prepared by North Korea for a coming invasion of the South. During these efforts Geller was well paid indeed becoming not only a millionaire but also fulfilling his stated life's goal: to become rich and famous. No philosopher Geller nevertheless was attracted to making a personal Arab-Israeli peace movement and used mental suggestion on Arab billionaire Adnan Khashoggi to help cement peace between their nations Israeli Geller had fought and been wounded in the Six-Day War. His book divides up between tape-recorded memoirs by Geller and a survey of the more weighty aspects of psi parapsychology by Playfair as are exemplified in Geller. Much of the past scientific research on Geller is reviewed and all the outstanding arguments against him including those by magician James Randi hoax-exposer Martin Gardner and others are answered. Playfair himself remains on the fence about Geller's abilities though clearly leans toward Geller. Some of Geller's students have carried spoonbending to groups and now there are several groups who enjoy getting together and bending metal. A very good copy previous owners bookplate to front paste-down cut edges dust soiled mild bump to lower edge some general light rubbing small tear to cloth at upper right rear corner. 9070. Octavo 1-8 1-2 3-319 320: blank note: last leaf is a blank cloth. Lyon's second collection of short fiction and his last book. Lyon's untimely death at age 33 cut short a promising literary career. His fiction was of high caliber and has been favorably compared with that of Stephen Crane and Ambrose Bierce. "The 31 tales and sketches in Sardonics and Graphics can be properly compared with the work of Crane and Bierce for vivid highly characterized and purposeful narrative. 'The Second Motive' in Sardonics and 'Revenge' in Graphics are psychological murder tragedies at the two extremes of the social scale. Lyon like Crane and Norris died before his talents had fully matured and unfortunately when his work had only begun to appear in McClure's Magazine and to attract special attention." - Bennett A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting p. 204. Lyon's two books were published in small editions and both are now uncommon. Listed in Hubin Crime Fiction II: A Comprehensive Bibliography 1749-1990. William Marion Reedy hardcover
