Bill Intituled an Act to Make Provision for Certain Payments to Be Made in Connection with the Revocation of the Charter of the Royal Nigier Company.
London, House of Commons. 1899. 3pp. Folio. Paper wrappers. British parliamentary paper. Bill 186. Neat library mark. Dust toned appearance otherwise a clean copy. The Royal Niger Company was a mercantile company chartered by the British government in the nineteenth century. Built up on Sir George Taubman Goldie's dream of adding the then little known regions of the lower and middle Niger River to the British Empire, his reputation, first with his United African Company, which became the National African Company and finally on granting of the royal charter (1886), the Royal Niger Company, was characterised by its use of blank forms for treaties with the Niger Delta chiefs. Changing world economic circumstances however forced the company, in 1899 to cede and transfer its territories to the British government for the sum of GBP £865,000 (clause 1. of Bill). Bill contains preamble and a further three clauses. Came into force January 1st, 1900. The ceded territory together with the small Niger Coast Protectorate, already under imperial control, was formed into the two protectorates of southern and northern Nigeria.
