Reprint de l'originale de 1923, agrémentée d'une abondante iconographie comprenant photographies, dessins et cartes. Ë l'issue de la Première Guerre mondiale, le projet d'une liaison sûre et rapide entre la France métropolitaine et l'Afrique équatoriale séduit coloniaux et industriels, et trouve un écho très favorable dans les milieux militaires et scientifiques. Une grande idée que l'automobile rend enfin possible. Confiant dans son matériel, André Citroën est quant à lui persuadé que cette liaison peut se faire en 20 jours à peine. Il sait les difficultés technologiques que représente un raid en Afrique. Les véhicules ont de grandes difficultés à avancer dans le sable, les roues étant en permanence enlisées, et les écarts de température nuisent au moteur. Bouillants le jour, les liquides (huile et eau) gèlent la nuit. Selon ses propres dires, ' La première idée d'un raid transsaharien naquit pendant la guerre 14-18 qui révéla l'importance des ressources des colonies d'Afrique équatoriale pour la France [..]. On réalise alors que ces richesses ne pourraient prendre leur vraie valeur qu'à partir de [..] l'établissement d'un réseau efficace de communication '. Partis de Touggourt en Algérie, Georges-Marie Haardt, Louis Audoin-Dubreuil et une équipe de 10 personnes dont plusieurs militaires et un géographe, relient Tombouctou au Soudan, en 20 jours, comme l'espérait Citroën. Avec 5 véhicules Citroën à chenilles Kégresse, les membres de la ' mission Haardt-Audouin ' effectuent la première liaison directe entre l'Algérie et l'Afrique Occidentale Française. Et c'est en grande pompe, le 7 janvier 1923 que le premier courrier transsaharien automobile est remis au commandant de la région de Tombouctou, le colonel Mangeot. André Citroën a su faire de cette expédition, une incroyable publicité pour sa firme. Il réitérera cette expérience de la Croisière noire en Afrique en 1924 puis organisera la Croisière jaune en Asie en 1931, et la Croisière blanche en Alaska en 1934. Excellente condition.

Die beiden Bildbände sind sehr aufwendig gestaltet. Insgesamt gibt Neumann ein sehr interessantes Bild der bereisten Gebiete aus den letzten 30 Jahren, wobei er nicht nur Entwicklungsprojekte und die wirtschaftliche Situation beschreibt, sondern auch naturwissenschaftliche Einblicke gewährt, den Leser zu prähistorischen Funden hinführt und durch seine Sprachkenntnis sowie seiner Islam-Studien tiefe Einblicke in die Denk- und Lebensweise der islamischen Bewohner gibt.

Le pp. 268-300 sono di annotazioni, le pp. 301-326 di dizionario descrittivo ed esplicativo. Le pp. 327-347 sono di indici. Bell'esemplare in barbe, occasionalmente fiorito. Edizione compendiata francese di una delle più importanti relazioni di viaggio in Africa mai scritte. Mungo Park (Foushiels, Scozia, 1771-Bussa, Nigeria, 1806), tra i più grandi esploratori del Continente Nero, si imbarcò nel 1795 alla volta della Gambia per conto della Società africana di Londra dopo la morte del maggiore Houghton nel suo tentativo di raggiungere il Niger. Raggiunto il 21 luglio il corso del Niger, fece ritorno in Inghilterra e pubblicò la sua relazione di viaggio, "Travels in the Interior of Africa", ricca di preziose informazioni scientifiche. Tornato in Africa nel 1805, raggiunse nuovamente il Niger a Bamako e ne risalì il corso a bordo di un battello. "I saw with infinite pleasure the grat object of my mission - the long sought-for, majestic Niger, glittering to the morning sun, as broad as the Thames at Westminster, and flowing slowly to the eastward". Nell'attuale Nigeria, superando le rapide che il fiume forma presso Bussa, la spedizione subì l'attacco degli indigeni; tutti gli uomini vennero uccisi, e Park annegò nel tentativo di trarsi in salvo. Preventivamente aveva mandato in patria una relazione della prima parte del viaggio stesso, "Journal of a Mission into the Interior of Africa", di non minore importanza della prima e pubblicata dopo la notizia della sua scomparsa, giunta in patria nel 1806. Entrambe le relazioni furono tradotte nelle principali lingue europee e ottennero grandissima fortuna anche per il loro stile semplice e letterariamente vigoroso. Etwas späterer Halbleinenband mit Rückengoldprägung, St.a.T. und 1 gelöschter St. (dadurch einige kleine Fehlstellen), leicht gebräunt, insgesamt ein gutes Exemplar. Sehr seltene 1. deutsche Ausgabe, noch vor der englischen Original-Ausgabe (1815) erschienen. Engelmann kennt nur die deutsche Ausgabe von 1821! - Der Schotte Mungo Park (1771-1806) begann 1805 seine zweite Reise von Senegal aus in das Innere Afrikas. Mit 36 Soldaten, 4 Zimmerleuten, seinem Schwager, dem Zeichner G.Scott und dem Mandingoführer Isaako zog Park in der Regenzeit zum Niger. Viele der Soldaten starben noch bevor sie den Niger erreichten, wo die Reise mit Booten fortgesetzt wurde. 1806 wurden Park und seine Begleiter am Niger überfallen und ermordet.
