1865. Hardcover. Good. The West Point account book of William Gerhard while a cadet 1865-1869 and 6 documents relating to his military service. William Gerhard 1847-1914 of Philadelphia was the son of Benjamin Gerhard 1811-1864 and Anna Sergeant Gerhard 1815-1873. He married Sally Lyle Howell 1855-1879 and they had one child Arthur Howell Gerhard 1877-1949. He was appointed a cadet on Sept. 8 1864 and was at West Point from June 1865 through June 1869 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the 9th United States Cavalry on June 15. He served in Texas from Oct. 1869 until he resigned on September 30 1874 having been promoted to 1st Lieut on Nov. 19 1873. Following his military service he was a manufacturer of chains and anchors in Ardmore Pa. and then a senior member of Empire Chain Works Philadelphia Pa. The account book is the original calf-bound book issued by West Point showing Gerhard's monthly expenses for items from the commisary and other expenses for the 4 years he was a cadet. With handwritten paper label on the front cover: "Cadet William Gerhard June 1865." The additional documents consist of: 1 a handwritten letter reporting "Gen. Meade took Willie Gerhard to see the President to ask for an appointment at West Point" and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton subsequently making the appointment; 2 printed letter of appointment for Gerhard signed by Stanton and dated Sept. 8 1864; 3 official appointment with blue seal to take effect July 1 1865 signed by Edwin M. Stanton and dated Feb. 22 1866 sic; 4 Gerhard's appointment as Second Lieut. in the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War John A. Rawlins and dated June 24 1869; 5 a leave of absence for 3 months for Gerhard signed by Adjutant General E. D. Townsend and dated June 23 1869; and 6 Gerhard's promotion to 1st Lieut. of the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War Wm. W. Belknap and dated Nov. 29 1873. The handwritten letter is unsigned but attributed to James Cornell Biddle 1835-1898 which is consistent with the letter. The account book is in Good Condition: front board is detached but present; lacking leather from spine; pages are clean and tight. Documents are clean and solid; light folds some of which are starting to separate. hardcover

Hardcover, bound in contemporary half calf and pebbled cloth, spine richly decorated in gilt, cloth inner hinges, red ribbon signet; scattered foxing, corners rubbed, bumped. In about fine condition. Some leaves still unopened. A very handsome copy. ~ First edition. This copy is, or was intended to be, a Presentation Copy from the Author to Maréchal Comte Randon, Marshall of France. With an autograph letter, handwritten in ink in a very neat hand by Gerlach, signed by himself, dated March 2, 1860, addressed to the Maréchal. It comprises a large leaf folded into a four-page document (last page blank), with 47 lines of text, date, and signature. "I request Your Excellency to be willing to accept this copy of the Military annals of the Dutch East-Indies," it opens, written in French. Expressing his appreciation to Randon's military achievements, he begs that the book will be presented to His Majesty the Emperor of the French, continuing, "Voilà monsieur le Maréchal ce qui me porte à vous offrir ce travail et à vous prier d'être mon interprète auprès de l'Auguste chef du peuple français pour que Sa Majesté daigne accepter un exemplaire de mon livre." The letter is in exceptionally fine condition though a bit foxed. Jacques Louis César Alexandre, Maréchal Comte Randon (1795-1871). The author, Abraham Jean Arnaud Gerlach, was born in 1811 in Groningen. He received his education at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie, graduating as Lieutenant of the Artillery. As Colonel he later had a long teaching career at the same academy, and contributed regularly to military studies and publications. He translated his "Fastes militaires des Indes" into Dutch, and published it in Zalt-Bommel and Paris in 1874-75 as the three-volume set "Neerlands heldenfeiten in Oost-Indië". He died in 1906. The importance of this work is remarkable: OCLC lists no less than 20 major North American libraries who keep a copy, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Washington, Princeton, and Columbia university libraries, as well as NYPL. Photograph Album Taken During the 1950's French Vietnam War by a German Naval Officer Capturing Indigenous and Scenes of War Efforts.
Album of snapshot photographs taken by a German naval officer during the Vietnam War, circa 1954-1957, capturing indigenous life and custom, along with scenes of war efforts. Contains 224 gelatin silver print blank and white photographs and 5 colour photographic postcards, mounted onto black cardstock leaves and captioned in manuscript, in German. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8,5 x 5,5 cm, and the largest 9 x 14 cm. Album leafs separated by tissue guards. Oblong 8vo. album measuring approximately 28 x 20 x 4,5 cm, brown leather boards. Minor wear to boards, occasional creasing to tissue guards, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with striking and uncommon images of an important era in the history of Vietnam's fight for independence. The German soldier is not identified although he would have been in the French army, specifically in one of France's elite fighting forces, the Légion étrangère (French Foreign Legion), which was a branch of the French Army open to foreign recruits. The images extend in regions between Hue to Ho Chi Minh City, inclusive of the two cities, and begin around the time that anti-colonial resistance succeeded in overthrowing the French colonialists with the Dien Bien Phu battle in May 1954, and when Vietnam was divided into north and south at the 17th parallel. He was present for the early years of the Second Indochina War which began in 1955. One of the images and its caption reveals that he returned home on SS Pasteur, aiding to date the album. SS Pasteur carried French troops to Vietnam from 1954-1957 during the Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, which took place from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. She was a steam turbine ocean liner built for Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique. From 1939-1957 she was named Pasteur. She later sailed as Bremen for Norddeutscher Lloyd. In the course of her career, she sailed for 41 years under four names and six countries' flags. The album is centered in south Vietnam, which in 1954 was the monarchist "State of Vietnam". After the Geneva Conference of 1954, as well as becoming fully independent with its departure from the French Union, the State of Vietnam became territorially confined to those lands of Vietnam south of the 17th parallel, and on 26 October 1955 it was established as the "Republic of Vietnam" with Ngô Ðình Dim being its first President.
