1 vol. in-4 cartonnage bradel chamois d'origine, pièce de titre en maroquin aubergine, sous étui morderne, Imprimerie Royale, Paris, 1844, 2 ff., XVI-329 pp. avec une carte dépliante et 40 planches hors texte Très bel exemplaire, d'une fraîcheur intérieure tout à fait remarquable (très petit frott. en coiffe sup et très petit accroc en dos, parfait état par ailleurs) auquel est joint un bel autographe du Maréchal Bugeaud. Bel et célèbre ouvrage, orné de 200 vignettes gravées sur bois d'après Raffet, dont 40 grands sujets tirés à part sur papier de Chine et collés sur vélin, chacune sous serpente portant la légende imprimée. "Ouvrage splendidement exécuté et non mis dans le commerce" (Brivois, 306). Le Duc d'Orléans, fils aîné du roi Louis-Philippe, ayant accompli un dangereux voyage dans l'Algérie à peine conquise, il en avait rapporté des notes confiées à Charles Nodier. Livre privé destiné aux membres de la famille royale et aux membres de l'expédition Vicaire VI, 140 ; Carteret, III, 434. Bon exemplaire d'une très belle fraîcheur. "L'expédition des Portes de Fer, également appelée expédition des Bibans est une opération militaire de l'armée française en octobre 1839, visant à établir une liaison terrestre entre Alger et Constantine, en passant par deux défilés des monts Bibans, dits « les Portes de Fer ». La traversée de ce territoire ne respectant pas les clauses du traité de la Tafna signé en 1837 avec l'émir Abd el-Kader, celui-ci est amené à reprendre les hostilités" (Wikipedia). Français

In-8, demi-veau marbré fauve, dos à nerfs orné d'un fleuron doré répété, titre et filets dorés, viii, 300 p., portrait frontispice, 6 planches hors-texte dont 5 cartes et plans et reproduction d'une peinture de Chepfer. Edition originale posthume de ces mémoires publiés par Lucien Noël, petit-fils de l'auteur. "Pas franchement bonapartiste mais tellement sincère, Noël peut compter parmi les témoins sérieux des campagnes napoléoniennes. L'auteur, fin observateur, a participé à la seconde campagne d'Italie, à celle de 1809, aux campagnes d'Espagne, du Portugal, de Russie, d'Allemagne et de France. Il continuera sa carrière après l'Empire jusqu'en 1832, comme Directeur d'artillerie à Bayonne et à Neuf-Brisach. Il convient de noter également que l'auteur ne s'est pas contenté de décrire ses impressions militaires: il nous fait part, tout au long de son témoignage, de ses réflexions d'ordre moral ou politique" (Christophe Bourachot, Lib. des 2 Empires, 1999).
