Le texte sur la castramétation présente le fonctionnement de l'armée romaine( terme militaire antique utilisé dans le glossaire technique de l'archéologie, désignant l'art de choisir et de disposer l'emplacement d'un camp ou d'une place forte), il est illustré de nombreuses gravures: soldats, machines de guerre etc...Guillaume Du Choul (1496-1560) né d'une famille d'hommes de loi lyonnais. Il était le cousin germain du poète Maurice Scève. Son activité comme bailli du Dauphiné est mal connue, en revanche, comme antiquaire, il est documenté en 1536-1538, grâce aux témoignages de lettrés qui avaient suivi la cour à Lyon.
