‎CANNON, Richard‎

‎Historical Record of the Thirty-Ninth or the Dorsetshire Regiment of Foot:‎

‎London: Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode published by Parker Furnivall and Parker 1853. Smartly presented history of the hard-fighting 39th First and most desirable edition; subsequent printings were published with inferior unsigned wood-engraved variants of the original plates. The exact process by which copies of Cannon's histories came to be bound in this handsome style generally termed "presentation" - very occasionally signed by Smith of Long Acre - is not known. "Reputedly William IV proposed that a series of regimental histories should be compiled whereby the general public could be apprised of the distinguished services rendered by the regiments of the British army. the work of compilation was entrusted by royal warrant to Cannon principal clerk of the adjutant-general's office. He started immediately and the first volume to be published was a history of the Life Guards in 1837. Cannon's warrant expired on the death of William IV but was renewed on Victoria's accession to the throne. Unfortunately the official funding was not maintained and Cannon endeavoured to finance the project from his own pocket consequently running into serious pecuniary difficulties. Cannon's volumes were authoritative and readable well produced and often well illustrated. If somewhat lacking in the human interest expected of modern historians Cannon nevertheless set a standard for succeeding regimental historians to emulate" ODNB. The Dorsets raised in 1689 and reformed in 1702 fought in Spain and Portugal during the War of the Spanish Succession; during the 18th century they were at the siege of Gibraltar from whence the regiment's badge and in 1754 were the first British Army unit deployed to India hence their motto "Primus in India" and fought at Plassey. In 1809 they were sent to Spain fighting at Wellington's signal victories at Talavera Bussaco Badajoz Albuera and Vittoria. From 1832 a 13-year posting to India saw them taking part in the Coorg and Gwalior campaigns. The history cuts off before their embarkation for the Crimea in 1854. Octavo 210 x 123 mm. Engraved series title 2 hand-coloured lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic both by Madeley showing the regimental colours and badge and a group of three officers in uniform of the 1840s. Contemporary red morocco "presentation binding" spine gilt lettered direct five raised bands gilt royal crest crowned lion statant surmounting imperial crown at head foliate devices to other compartments St George and dragon at foot sides with panel of thick and thin gilt fillets enclosing an ornamental panel centre tool of the royal arms title above and dates below foliate edge roll and turn-ins recent yellow surface-paper endpapers gilt edges. Binding just a little rubbed at extremities short split at head of spine foxing to engraved series title and following leaf of letterpress. A very good copy. Ogilby 157 53. hardcover‎

‎HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE TENTH OR THE NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT OF FOOT Containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685 and of its subsequent services to 1847.‎

‎London: Parker Furnivall and Parker. 1847. First edition. First edition. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Illustrated with four full page hand coloured plates. A very near fine copy the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the spine tips the cloth bright and fresh with a touch of darkening to the spine. The contents with a bookseller's label tipped in at the gutter of the front endpaper and some toning to the paper stock are otherwise clean and bright throughout. "Reputedly William IV proposed that a series of regimental histories should be compiled whereby the general public could be apprised of the distinguished services rendered by the regiments of the British army. the work of compilation was entrusted by royal warrant to Richard Cannon. If somewhat lacking in the human interest expected of modern historians Cannon nevertheless set a standard for succeeding regimental historians to emulate" Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
