Er kombiniert die Originalberichte der Besatzungsmitglieder und die Erinnerungen einer bei den Angriffen verschütteten Rüstungsarbeiterin mit den Schilderungen der ländlichen Bevölkerung zu einer mehrstimmigen und multiperspektivischen Dokumentation, vermittelt beispielhaft erlebte Zeitgeschichte und füllt eine Lücke in der Geschichtsschreibung über den Luftkrieg. Insofern der Schwerpunkt der Darstellung auf den Individuen, ihrem Schicksal und ihrer Wahrnehmung liegt, ist das Buch immer spannend zu lesen.Am 25. und 26. Februar 1944 fliegen die Alliierten drei Luftangriffe auf Augsburg. Die Amerikaner greifen die Stadt zunächst bei Tag mit 196 Fliegenden Festungen an, später dirigiert das britische Bomberkommando 594 Lancaster- und Halifaxbomber zu zwei verheerenden Nachtangriffen dorthin. In der Augsburger Schreckensnacht sterben fast 800 Menschen, 90000 werden obdachlos. Drei Bomber, die an den Nachtangriffen beteiligt waren, werden bei ihrem Rückflug nach England von deutschen Nachtjägern über der Schwäbischen Alb abgeschossen, von den abgestürzten Besatzungsmitgliedern überleben nur sieben. Obwohl die Dörfer der Schwäbischen Alb nur Überfluggebiet waren, bestimmten die Luftangriffe den Lebensalltag ihrer Bewohner, und in den Dörfern, wo die Bomber abstürzten, erzählen die Menschen noch heute von ihren Begegnungen mit den Feinden, die buchstäblich vom Himmel gefallen waren. Otmar Gotterbarm hat rund zehn Jahre recherchiert, um die Spuren dieser Abgestürzten von England und Kanada aus bis in die Gegenwart und das Gedächtnis der schwäbischen Landbevölkerung hinein zu verfolgen und nachzuzeichnen, wie der Luftkrieg an Bord der Maschinen und am Boden erfahren wurde. Er befragte Zeitzeugen in Deutschland, Europa und Nordamerika, wertete in der Forschung auch bislang nicht berücksichtigtes britisches und deutsches Archivmaterial aus und entdeckte noch weitgehend unveröffentlichte Fotografien aus privaten Beständen. ‎La pl. imagine la forme et le fonctionnement du nouveau système d’artillerie de la monarchie de Juillet. D’après l’explication, « cette artillerie est spécialement affectée à faire pâlir la république et à donner une vigoureuse leçon aux éternels ennemis de l’ordre » Elle se présente sous une forme anthropomorphe : il s’agit de d’Argout, de taille environ trois fois plus grande que la taille humaine, avec une tête disproportionnée. Il est à quatre pattes. Ses jambes ressemblent à des pattes arrière de volatile, dans des bottes. L’arrière de son corps expulse des feuilles portant des inscriptions. Elles entretiennent toutes un rapport avec la censure de l’expression telle qu’elle est mise en place par le gouvernement. Les lunettes que porte d’Argout sur le bout de son grand nez ont la forme d’une paire de ciseaux, laquelle évoque, par l’idée de découpe qu’elle suggère, la censure de l’expression, et notamment de la presse écrite. De la bouche de cette machine sortent des petits hommes armés de battes et d’épées. Il s’agit de ce que "La Caricature" appelle des « assommeurs », entraînés pour frapper les républicains ou tout autre opposant au régime. Une femme, d’ailleurs, est à terrassée, à gche, ainsi qu’un enfant. A dte, Louis-Philippe est celui qui met en branle la machine de guerre en pointant un outil dans le derrière de l’engin. Il porte un chapeau haut de forme décoré de la cocarde tricolore, des lunettes, un parapluie dans le dos, et un habit de hussard. La légende fait mention de la date du 23 février 1834. A cette date, les députés votèrent une loi qui ouvrit des crédits pour l'accroissement temporaire de l'effectif de la gendarmerie et attribua les fonctions d'officiers de police judiciaire aux Maréchaux des logis et Brigadiers de gendarmerie dans dix départements de l'Ouest.‎
