Tan stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth a little flecked with minor loss to the head of the spine slight loss to the foot and light wear to the corners; front flyleaf laid down on the pastedown with ownership details - see below - still legible in reverse; two small pieces of clear tape on the pastedowns; textblock reinserted in the binding with minor blemishes to the inner hinges and the frontispiece and title leaf a little out of alignment; one leaf pages 15/16 listing those killed in action chipped and creased on all margins possibly detached at some stage; minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy. The ink ownership details of a member of the brigade 32988 Gunner Charles Francis John Davidson are written on the original flyleaf see page 96 for his details in the nominal roll: 'Joined - 11/9/17 Wounded - 2/11/17 Ypres Transferred to Corps Educational School - 7/1/19'. An unusual approach has been adopted for this history: apart from a few preliminaries a chronology of movements of the Brigade 10 pages the Roll of Honour and list of Honours and Awards totally 16 pages the bulk of the book is devoted to biographical information about every member of the unit 217 pages. [25th Field Artillery Brigade]
Duplicate loose-leaf sheets of the detailed daily war diary maintained in the field by Captain William John Noonan 25th FAB from 2 January to 11 January 1917
Very Good. Oblong folio 210 × 340 mm eleven sheets nine of them are 'Army Form C. 2118' with printed columns and headings the other two are plain paper; all contain duplicate manuscript entries rectos only. All sheets are signed in indelible pencil by Captain Noonan; on one of the plain sheets he has written 'Spare Copy'. Filing holes in the top margin; a few minor chips and dogears; overall in very good condition. Internal evidence places the 25th FAB in the vicinity of Ginchy and Le Transloy in the Somme. Routine observations temperature barometric pressure ammunition expended casualties are secondary to the often lengthy reports of brigade and enemy activity. A typical day's work might involve the registration of new 'S.O.S.' lines 'pre-determined lines that artillery fired along if the infantry was suddenly attacked; these were aimed at areas in No-Man's Land or in the German front lines where attacks might start from' quoting Lieutenant-General Robert Dunlop on Great War Forum online. Attempts on 2 January were 'not very successful . These two positions of observation are under fairly heavy shell fire which renders the condition of observation somewhat difficult as the bursting shells obscure the view just at the time we are firing the registration rounds'. On 10 January 'Enemy artillery was more active than usual and consistently shelled . vicinity of Battery positions with 5.9" and 8" shells throughout the day from 10 am to 4.15 pm at about the rate of one per minute' from the direction of Riencourt misspelled Reincourt. That day an enemy aircraft was also brought down by machine gun fire 'and the aviator who was wounded passed through our Ambulance'. Only one casualty is recorded: 9062 Gunner Albert William Smith was wounded in action on 5 January. Captain William John Noonan survived the war and went on to the next one as V1653. unknown

Five Pieces of Ephemera Relating to Alnwick Volunteers
No Place: No Publisher Five pieces of ephemera various sizes and dates but between 1862 and 1878 and probably all published in Alnwick with four relating to the Percy Artillery Volunteers and one to the 5th Northumberland Volunteer Rifle Corps. Lightly browned and lightly creased the largest item with several closed tears including to folds and edges all with minor evidence of being removed from a scrap album. The first item is a handbill dated 1862 approximately 125mm x 205mm in size relating to a bazaar held in Alnwick to fund the 5th Northumberland Volunteer Rifle Corps. The second item is a handbill approximately 225mm x 200mm in size which gives the strength in numbers of the Percy Artillery Volunteers for the years 1871-2. The third item approximately 260mm x 205mm in size is the financial statement for the year 1877-78. The fourth approximately 210mm x 325mm is an extract from the annual return of the Percy Artillery Volunteer Brigade from 1878 showing the staff and the numerical strength of the various units; with the fifth from 1877 approximately 745mm x 510mm in size showing the strength of the Artillery Volunteers with a list of ranks and names. 1843. Half gilt-ruled morocco and cloth "Notes on Artillery / R. M. A. / L. Paget / 1843" stamped in gilt on upper board and spine; 8 x 6.25 inches; pp. 6 297 title-page with hand-drawn and colored vignette two finely drawn folding plates a gun and a boring machine for the preparation of gun barrels plus numerous illustrations in text. An exceptionally fine work by Paget presumably a cadet at the time of writing. Penmanship including handwriting drawings diagrams charts is remarkably careful and detailed even lovely and covers casting detonation hand grenades bridges mortars velocity wheels "nature and application of projectiles" and much much more. Paget later served in India and helped suprress the Great Rebellion of 1857. A book on his Indian experiences written with his wife was published in 1865. <br/><br/> hardcover

An albumen paper photograph 143 × 203 mm with the top corners arched within a hand-drawn thin red ink double-rule border on the original plain card mount 267 × 367 mm; apart from a few light marks to the mount and a little bit of tanning near the right-hand edge of the print the item is in excellent condition. No pertinent details - when where and why the photograph was taken and by whom - are known and the later pencilling on the verso a price and what seems to be a name adds nothing. From first principles we suggest the 1860s 'somewhere in England' a training exercise and an 'official' photographer and there seem to be a couple of women in the middle distance on the right. unknown

A very rare souvenir album documenting one of the continuous nighttime anti-aircraft drills executed in conjunction with the 5th Army Air Force Group in order to better train for possible enemy nighttime aerial assaults on Hawaii between the Wars. These not only offered the 5th Group pilots night flying training but also sharpened and honed the skills of the CAC groups in the 64th Artillery coordinating targeting and their searchlights hunting for possible enemy aircraft. The photos depict the entire Battery C personnel weaponry and several of night firing in conjunction with the searchlights. An interesting and attractive collection of 21 publications relating to the Honourable Artillery Company established in the Old Artillery Gardens at Spitalfields which was incorporated by royal charter in the reign of Henry VIII and is therefore the oldest surviving regiment in the British army. The term artillery was all encompassing initially including longbowmen crossbowmen and grenadiers; indeed the nascent Grenadier Guards and Royal Marines were both formed by members of the HAC during the second half of the seventeenth-century. Drawn largely from men in the vicinity of the City of London it became a City institution and a bastion of establishment order; until 1780 responsible for the officer training of London 'trained bands' of militia serving in the same year to help restore order to London during the Gordon Riots and later acting in a policing capacity in the metropolis. Varying from the most ephemeral circular letter or programme of an eighteenth-century firework display through a large broadside defence against legal moves on the Company's house ground and estates by the Court of Lieutenancy to the official officer lists and prospectuses of the HAC this collection covers a period of change for the Company. An era in which membership of Company swelled not least thanks to the threat of French invasion but also as the purpose of it began to morph however glacially from the hard-headed metropolitan military organisation of the early modern period to the increasingly civil and ceremonial position it occupies today. The majority of items in this generally fresh condition collection are rare with ESTC recording fewer than five British locations and in many cases just one or two locations generally BL and the HAC itself.
