‎QUATRIÈME ÉDITION de ce RARE ET IMPORTANT TRAITÉ D'ARTILLERIE DE LA FIN DU XVIe SIÈCLE, la première édition ayant été imprimée en 1598, suivie de celles de 1602 et 1618, toutes publiées à Venise. INTÉRESSANTE ILLUSTRATION gravée sur bois comprenant un TITRE dans un encadrement composé de matériel militaire, représentant l'auteur en pied dans son cabinet, un fusil à la main, devant une table sur laquelle reposent un petit canon, une équerre, un compas, un plan de fortification, deux grandes plumes et une couronne, ainsi que 96 FIGURES SUR BOIS dans le texte, dont 18 de grand format, représentant des canons, du matériel militaire, des machines de guerre, des feux d'artifices, plans de fortifications, vue de ville, etc. L'ouvrage est conçu sous la forme d'un jeu de 69 questions-réponses entre deux interlocuteurs (ff. 1 à 44), suivi d'une série d'«instructions» ou «avvertimento» (ff. 45 à 58). Ces dialogues évoquent certaines idées défendues par des théoriciens de l'art militaire, pour mieux les dénigrer ensuite sur le ton de la moquerie, au profit de préceptes avancés par l'auteur. Ces dialogues et instructions concernent principalement l'artillerie, les fortifications et restaurations, la géométrie, la poudre à canon ainsi que les FEUX D'ARTIFICES. Alessandro CAPOBIANCO (1560-1635), originaire de Vicence, en Vénétie, était capitaine du corps des artilleurs de la ville de Crème, en Lombardie, sur le Serio. Il était au service de la République vénitienne. La rédaction de ce FAMEUX TRAITÉ, qui contient toutes les connaissances acquises au XVIe siècle sur la pratique de l'artillerie, lui réclama dix ans de travail. Dédié à Lunardo Rossetti, capitaine des bombardiers de Venise, l'ouvrage est divisé en CINQ PARTIES: 1): "Del Capitano sopra l'artiglieria è esaminato il bombardiero". (Du capitaine sur l'artillerie et en particulier du bombardier). 2) : "Delle provisioni nelle fattioni di mare con altri avvertimenti" (Du matériel utilisé pour les manoeuvres en mer avec d'autres instructions). 3) : "Delle invenzioni de fuochi artificiali per feste e giuoco" (Des feux d'artifices pour les fêtes et les jeux). 4): "Della cognizione per misurare distanze" (De la connaissance de la mesure des distances). 5): "Breve Ragionamento sopra la fortificazione" (Brefs raisonnements sur les fortifications). EXEMPLAIRE TRÈS PUR relié sur brochure, imprimé sur beau vergé à la forme, avec ses grandes marges d'origine conservées. Il provient de la BIBLIOTHÈQUE de Désiré-François RUGGIERI (1818-1885), qui fut l'artificier et le protégé de Napoléon III. Grand érudit, bibliophile, il fut également l'élève d'Ingres avant de succéder à son père Claude-Fortuné RUGGIERI, et de reprendre la célèbre entreprise familiale de feux d'artifices.
