‎SLND 1 feuille in-folio manuscrite à l'encre brune recto-verso (335 X 220 mm.) signée Henry, La Fayette et Carle. (traces de plis). Chemise de paier d'époque.‎

‎Lettre du grenadier Henry demandant au général de La Fayette (1757-1834) de renouveler sa recommandation pour un poste de sous-lieutenant dans le régiment de Mr Charton. Agé de 22 ans, le jeune homme donne la liste des personnes qui lont recommandé, dont George Washington de Lafayette, fils du Marquis, qui entamera une carrière militaire en 1797, à son retour dexil aux Etats Unis. Henry est un grenadier du bataillon dHenry IV, un des éléments composant la Garde Nationale Parisienne que commande La Fayette jusquau 8 octobre 1791, date de sa démission. Cette garde comportait 60 bataillons, incluant celui des Vétérans dont les membres se distinguaient par un chapeau à la Henri-IV et une écharpe blanche. Cette lettre du grenadier Henry à son ancien commandant est une seconde tentative pour obtenir ce poste quil na pas obtenu malgré une première recommandation de La Fayette : « Eh bien mon général, les ordres que vous pouvez avoir donné nont point été exécutés ». Il sollicite donc lappui de La Fayette pour intégrer le régiment de Charles François Charton (1765-1796), brillant officier de la période révolutionnaire dont la carrière débute en 1789 dans la garde nationale. Sous-lieutenant en 1792, Il meurt au combat de Castellaro le (12 septembre 1796) avec le grade de général. Ayant été nommé adjudant général chef de bataillon par les représentants du peuple le 20 décembre 1793, cest donc certainement en 1794 que le grenadier Henry tente dintégrer son régiment. Or, La Fayette étant emprisonné depuis 1792, cela signifierait que malgré sa captivité, Il entretenait une correspondance et quil conservait une grande influence auprès des officiers français . Transcription de la lettre : « Le sieur Henry de 22 ans taille 5,05 pieds pouces, élevée en mathématiques, à lhonneur de vous représenter il y a environ cinq mois, il vous a fait remettre par Monsieur Carte un mémoire dans lequel il a énoncé différencie et les derniers quil a rendu depuis le commencement de la révolution, et qui a été apostillé par Monsieur George de la Fayette, Carte commandant, et plusieurs autres personnes qui toutes lont recommandé et vous ont prié de lui faire obtenir une soulieutenance dans un des corps en nouvelle formation. Daprès les recommandations de toutes ces personnes ci-dessus dénommé, vous avez eu la bonté de promettre à Monsieur Carte que le sieur Henry serait placé dans un des trois régiments ; eh bien mon General, les ordres que vous pouvez avoir donné relativement à la place que vous lui aviez destiné non points été exécuté et il se trouve présentement sans être placé. Depuis votre de départ, le sieur Henri a été chez Monsieur Charton pour le prier de le faire entrer dans son régiment en lui observant quil était recommandé par Monsieur de La Fayette ; Monsieur Charton lui a répondu que comme ayant servi dans le bataillon dHenri IV et étant recommandé par Monsieur de La Fayette, il ferait tout son possible pour lui faire avoir une soulieutenance dans son régiment. Ainsi mon général, jespère que vous voudrez bien avoir la bonté de le recommander à Monsieur Chartons et participer à son avancement. Vous obligerez celui qui a lhonneur dêtre avec le plus profond respect, mon général, le très humble et obéissant serviteur. Henri grenadier du bataillon dHenry IV. ». Contresigné de la main de La Fayette : « Recommandé particulièrement à Monsieur Chartron. [Signé] La Fayette ». Et à droite : « Recommandé très particulièrement par le très humble serviteur Carle, 1er lieutenant-colonel de la troisième division de gendarmerie nationale. » Beau document témoignant du geste de La Fayette envers un jeune officier que lui recommande son fils George. 1 sheet in-folio handwritten in brown ink on both sides (335 X 220 mm.) signed Henry, La Fayette and Carle (traces of folds). Period folder. Letter from grenadier Henry asking general de La Fayette (1757-1834) to renew his recommendation for a position as second lieutenant in the regiment of Mr Charton. Aged 22, the young man gives the list of the people who recommended him, among whom George Washington de Lafayette, son of the Marquis, who will start a military career in 1797, at his return from exile in the United States. Henry was a grenadier in the Henry IV battalion, one of the elements of the Paris National Guard that La Fayette commanded until October 8, 1791, when he resigned. This guard was composed of 60 battalions, including the one of the Veterans, whose members were distinguished by a Henry IV hat and a white scarf. This letter from Grenadier Henry to his former commander is a second attempt to obtain this position, which he did not obtain despite a first recommendation from La Fayette: "Well my general, the orders you may have given have not been carried out...". He therefore asked for La Fayette's support to join the regiment of Charles François Charton (1765-1796), a brilliant officer of the revolutionary period whose career began in 1789 in the National Guard. Second lieutenant in 1792, he died in the battle of Castellaro on September 12, 1796 with the rank of general. Having been appointed Adjutant General in charge of a battalion by the representatives of the people on December 20, 1793, it was certainly in 1794 that Grenadier Henry tried to integrate his regiment. Now, since La Fayette had been imprisoned since 1792, this would mean that despite his captivity, he maintained a correspondence and that he kept a great influence with the French officers. Transcription of the letter: "Sieur Henry, 22 years old, height 5,05 feet inches, educated in mathematics, had the honor of representing you about five months ago, he had Monsieur Carte give you a memorandum in which he stated the differences and the last ones that he has rendered since the beginning of the revolution, and which was apostilled by Monsieur George de la Fayette, Carte commandant, and several other persons who all recommended him and asked you to have him obtain a relief in one of the newly formed corps. According to the recommendations of all these people named above, you were kind enough to promise Monsieur Carte that Sieur Henry would be placed in one of the three regiments; well my General, the orders that you may have given concerning the place that you had intended for him have not been executed and he is presently without being placed. Since your departure, Sieur Henri has gone to Monsieur Charton to ask him to have him enter his regiment, observing that he was recommended by Monsieur de La Fayette; Monsieur Charton replied that as he had served in the battalion of Henri IV and was recommended by Monsieur de La Fayette, he would do everything possible to have him have a relief in his regiment. Thus, my general, I hope that you will be kind enough to recommend him to Monsieur Chartons and participate in his advancement. You will oblige the one who has the honor to be with the deepest respect, my general, the very humble and obedient servant. Henri grenadier of the battalion of Henry IV.
