Notre exemplaire, qui constitue un ouvrage distinct, correspond aux tomes 5, 6 (1811) et 7, 8 (1816) de l'ensemble que Jomini avait intitulé en 1807 "Traité des grandes opérations militaires". Les campagnes de 1792-1793 et celles de 1794-1797 sont analysées de manière très didactique. Jomini conceptualise la "guerre moderne" en comparant Frédéric II et le système de guerre de Napoléon. Il trace les lignes de fractures stratégiques provoquées par la Révolution et l'Empire. Le système autrichien de défense "en cordon", de "vouloir tout couvrir", ou l'obsession "des boulangeries" y sont largement critiqués. Jomini démontre l'avantage à concentrer des forces sur une position centrale. L'intérêt de notre exemplaire en deuxième édition est la présence en fin de partie d'une conclusion en 1811 sous forme d'observations générales et d'un "Exposé des principes généraux sur lesquels l'art de la guerre repose" en 1816 (chapitre XL et dernier). Jomini avait rédigé ce chapitre à Posen en 1806. Il avait été imprimé pour la première fois dans une revue allemande en 1807. Jomini y développe treize principes "invariables", qui influencèrent profondément au XIXe siècle la pensée stratégique et les principes de la guerre. The fifth book was also published under the title Relation critical campaigns of the French against the coalition since 1792. In January 1807 Jomini finished the third part of his book on the wars of Frederick II and this time he titled Treaty sic major military operations. The fourth part will be published in 1809 under the same title. In 1811 volumes 5 and 6 appeared under the title History critique and military campaigns of the Revolution. It will be the same in 1816 for volumes 7 and 8. The third edition of the Treaty of major military operations will take more than the wars of Frederick II. Criticism and military history of the wars of the Revolution now constitute a distinct work. Antoine Henri Baron Jomini 1779-1869 was born in Switzerland and so impressed Napoleon with his grasp of strategy that he was transferred from the Swiss army to the Grand General Staff. He fought at Austerlitz and was promoted to General de Brigade in 1807. He joined the Allies in 1813 and immediately became Aide-de-Camp to the Tsar. His brilliance as a strategist ensured his influence over several generations of officers and his military philosophy found expression on the battlefields of the American Civil War. New York: D. Van Nostrand 192 Broadway 1864. Small oblong 9.8 inch 4to half calf contemporary marbelled boards gilt lettered spine. Compared to other copies based on the boards and the index pages this seems to be something of a deluxe edition though the maps are the same. There is some chipping to the edges of the spine with some scuffing and a few small scratches to the cover but the binding is sound. There is a full list of maps indexed to the text volumes those are not present here. Complete with all 60 steel-lpate engravings color coded for troop positions. These are all in very good or better condition. This atlas covers campaigns from the Valley of the Po i 1796 to the Battle of Wavre in 1815. Jomini was originally in the French army but later was a General in Russian service after a falling-out with the French command. This is a very nice small atlas of significance for students of military cartography. With respect to General Halleck who translated this set of Jomini's works: "He commanded the Department of the Missouri and then the Department of the Mississippi. He led the Union forces during the Corinth campaign before he became the commanding general of the Army on 13 July 1862. He served as commanding general until 9 March 1864 when he was designated as the chief of staff" from online site of The Army Historical Foundation.This copy has the bookplate of Alfred Mossman Landon oilman governor of Kansas and 1936 presidential candidate.
