Death Notice of Don Juan Morales Commander of Mexican Forces at the Alamo and Mexican-American War Veteran
Jalapa: January 10 1848. Near fine. Mourning card printed in gilt on black cardstock with an elaborate ornamental border 3.25 x 5 inches. Minor wear. An elaborate death notice honoring a decorated Mexican military commander in 1848. As a colonel under Santa Anna Don Juan Morales 1802-1847 served as field commander for Mexican forces at the Alamo and Coleto in 1836 and as a Major General in the Mexican-American War. He served as commandant of Veracruz abandoning the city when surrender seemed inevitable; he died shortly thereafter. The text of the card reads: "El dia 23 del procsimo pasado fallecio en Atlisco el Senor General Don Juan Morales Q. E. P. D. Su Esposa Hermanos Parientes Amigos y personas de estimacion lo participan a V. llenos del mas acerbo sentimiento suplicandole haga por su alma los sufragios que le dicte su piedad; por euyo favor le viviran reconocidos." This translates roughly as follows: "On the 23rd of last month General Don Juan Morales Rest in Peace passed away in Atlisco. His wife brothers relatives friends and loved ones share their deepest sympathy with you begging you to do the prayers for his soul that your piety dictates; for which favor they will live on in his honor. Toluca: February 11 1847. Very good. Broadside 16.75 x 12 inches. Previously folded. Faint dampstaining at left corners. Two small wormholes affecting one letter of text. Otherwise minor edge wear and light dust soiling. Unrecorded printings of two decrees by the legislature of the State of Mexico at Toluca that sought to raise emergency funds to defend the country against American invasion during the Mexican-American War. Passed on February 8 & February 11 1847 these acts authorized the state legislature to borrow 300000 pesos with one third of this money allocated to the army and the remainder to equip the national guard. This expenditure would be covered by a salary tax on government employees and additional taxes on alcohol including pulque and aguardiente sugar and lumber. The second decree provides guidance and stipulations for the collection of these taxes. At this point in time Santa Anna's army was rushing north to meet Zachary Taylor's forces at Buena Vista. Mexico City: November 17 1847. About very good. Broadside approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded two small tape repairs on blank verso. Small chip at upper left corner. Contemporary manuscript rubrics. Light toning and dust soiling. This scarce order was issued by the Archbishop of Mexico two months after the capture of Mexico City by the United States Army. It contains six articles that detail instructions for administering the last rites and orders for several other difficult matters in the occupied city. The extreme unction is to be performed secretly only in the mornings and at night unless the physician believes it is not possible to wait and further instructions are given on how to proceed secretly but properly with the ritual. The fifth article states that that if the American troops insult the residents the clergy should try to restore calm to obtain assistance from the local guards and to inform the American garrison commanders. The final article states that parish priests should "Proceder con la mayor prudencia y usar de los medios y vias mas suaves á fin de evitar toda clase de disturbios." An interesting reflection of the official fear of American distaste for Catholicism; we locate only one example at Yale. November 17 unknown

Mexico City 1848. Very good. 3pp. Printed on a single folded sheet. Dbd. Old vertical fold minor foxing. A rare United States Army field printing pertaining to a notable incident that occurred during the Mexican-American War. In early January 1848 Lt. Col. Miles was ordered by Brig. Gen. Twiggs to take command of a wagon train and a small cadre of troops and then conduct them from northern Mexico to Mexico City. Mexican merchants availed themselves of the escort for safe conduct of their merchandise to the capital city and other destinations in the interior of the country. The wagon train consisted of 316 government wagons which stretched to three miles in length with 1700 pack mules adding another nine miles to the procession. Col. Miles had 1300 troops under his command but only 150 of them were cavalry. Mexican guerillas under the command of Zenobia attacked the train between Santa Fe and Rio San Juan resulting in the loss of 300 pack mules along with the goods belonging to the Mexican merchants. Col. Miles was then brought up on charges in a military Court of Inquiry at Tacubaya Mexico the details and results of which are recorded in the present work. In short Col. Miles was exonerated of any misconduct especially considering that he only had "a small number of troops" at his command. The heart of the judgement states that "Lieut. Col. Miles exercised unusual prudence and foresight in his precautionary measures and that his entire arrangements upon the march were most judicious and officer-like and that instead of meriting censure or even animadversion the conduct of Lieut. Col. Miles entitles him to high commendation."<br /> <br /> The incident was described in a contemporary account recorded by American soldier Orlando B. Wilcox: "July 19. New acquaintance named Clark a sutler who was at Buena Vista.saw Zenobia's attack on Col. Miles' train. The Mexican merchants &c. whose pack mules the escort was protecting stood on a hill & saw Walker whipt & gave no assistance though they were numerous together & well armed. Zenobia made a dash at the pack mules. Clark was driven along with the crowd. Saw a volunteer try to cut the girth to save his pack; a lancer cut his head off at a clip. Zenobia left Clark as a prisoner charge of two men to 'whip the yankees.' Charge in deep files cavalry toward Walker's whose forty men dismounted. Walker was at their head; they gave way. Mex's dashed forward & on coming up wheeled to right & left" - Willcox.<br /> <br /> Dixon Stansbury Miles 1804-1862 served a wide-ranging career in the American Army. He fought in the Indian Wars the Seminole Wars and with particular distinction during the Mexican-American War before losing his life early in the Civil War. While commander of the Union garrison at Harper's Ferry in 1862 a time in his career when he had been censured by the Army for drunkenness he was mortally wounded while surrendering to Stonewall Jackson's forces during the Confederate invasion of Maryland.<br /> Willcox Orlando B. Huatusco: May 31 1847. Very good. Broadside decree 17.5 x 11 inches. Printed on lined paper. Previously folded with a couple of very small losses at central fold. Minor wear at edges. Light dust soiling and toning. A rare broadside decree that establishes guidelines for the collection of funds and donations for guerillas and their families continuing the fight against the American invasion around Veracruz in 1847. The important port city had fallen two months prior and Santa Anna was routed at Cerro Gerro by Winfield Scott a month earlier. All that was left for Mexican forces in the region was sustained guerilla harassment of the American army. In this decree a separate account from regular government monies is established for funds raised and various government departments of the state of Veracruz are ordered to encourage donations and to publicize contributions and children are even encouraged to contribute food to the soldiers. A desperate plea for a desperate situation; dated May 31 1847 and signed in type by Veracruz state president Juan Soto in Huatusco the temporary location of the displaced government. Toluca: Impreso por Quijano y Gallo 1847. Very good plus. 11pp. Gathered signatures stitched. Small ink notation to title page minor scattered foxing. A rare monograph from the Mexican Congress to its people in the midst of the Mexican-American War. Here the Mexican government implores the populace for an end internal bickering and instead to concentrate on defeating the American forces who intend to subjugate not only Mexico but all of the Americas. The Mexican legislature also argues clearly for guerrilla warfare. The work was issued just after the Battle of Cerro Gordo and also printed as a broadside with priority of the two editions unknown.<br /> <br /> "Dated April 26 1847 this rare and virtually unknown pamphlet criticizes the way the central government is handling the war. The writers are especially upset over taxation and the fiscal policy. Not in Haferkorn" - Garrett & Goodwin. Lengthy Letter Describing the Food and Scenery of Vera Cruz Written by Captain George Clutter of Wheeling West Virginia Captain of the the ‘Mountain Boys of Monongolia.’
Vera Cruz 1847. Folded letter to Wheeling Virginia with learly struck two-line datestamp with "Paid 10" manuscript rate and blue "Steam" handstamp of New Orleans on 1847 with an unusual “Steam†marking applied in New Orleans. Fine condition. Fine. A descriptive and interesting letter from Captain George W. Clutter of Wheeling Virginia describing the scenes and food in Vera Cruz in detail. Clutter had enlisted a detachment of thirty-two men in early 1847 in Monongalia County for service in the war who would eventually become known as the “Mountain Boys of Monongalia.†Clutter was promoted to the captaincy upon the resignation of John Tyler. The company sailed in June of 1847 on the Brig “Tuckahoe†from Old Point Comfort to Point Isabel where they marched to join General Taylor’s forces. <br /> <br /> This interesting letter written by Clutter from Vera Cruz describes the city and cuisine of Vera Cruz in detail. He writes “I am now boarding at the best Hotel in the city - it is called "Bells Stage House'. It is kept by a German lady in great grandeur. The quantity of fruit here is astonishing. Oranges are for sale at about the rate apples would sell in the Wheeling market. I only wish I could send you and the children some of them - such ones as you never eat in the United States as it would be impossible to carry them so far without rotting. <br /> <br /> As we get dinner here at 3 o'clock and no such thing as supper is known I stepped out this evening and obtained a 'cup of chocolate' and 'toast'. If an American or rather United States cook could taste such chocolate as the Mexicans make they never would attempt making the article again - and it is not so much in the simple making of the chocolate but it's in preparing it at the start - for every family even the provost understands making the article from the Cocoa.†Clutter offers additional details on troop movements and logistics of the campaign. Other letters by Clutter during the period are held at the West Virginia Regional History Center at WVU. <br /> <br /> Full contents follow:<br /> <br /> Vera Cruz Mexico<br /> Thursday Sept. 30th 1847<br /> <br /> When I wrote to you from the Brazos I felt in rather a bad humor and as I have arrived at this splendid city the first splendid place I have found in Mexico I will endeavor to write to you more at length than I did from the above named place. We left the Brazos at 5 o'clock P.M. on Monday on board the Steamship Ohio and without ever seeing the sun once during the voyage arrived here today Thursday about 11 o'clock A.M. - truly a quick trip. None of our Regiment except those who were favored with a passage on the Ohio in Company with Brig. Genl. Cushing are here yet. Those of our Regiment here are as follows: Lieut. Col. Withers Capt. Clay & his Company and Capt. Campbell & your humble servant who came upon the sick list. I am much improved since the commencement of the voyage and will with a day or two's rest be able to take up the line of march by the time the Regiment gets ready to move forward to join Genl. Scott. I must explain here the balance of the Regiment is coming in ships which may detain them two or three days in which event I will have become rested. Scott is in the City of Mexico having sustained a very heavy loss in getting there. We expect to have considerable fighting between here and the City of Mexico ourselves. Time however will reveal all things. <br /> <br /> The soreness in my legs which I complained of is better but I fear exercise will cause it to return. What it will terminate in I am unable to say at present. <br /> <br /> I received a letter from you at this place today which was read with the usual interest notwithstanding it was written on the 13th August 17 days previous to the last one received at Sabinito which was dated 30th August.<br /> <br /> I have just bought five Vera Cruz papers which I will send you. They are half Mexican which half you can dispose of as you see proper. By the bye Mr. Fleeson promised to send you the Matamoros Flag regular. Manuscript Letter Written by Ramon Adame Warning of the Approach of 10000 "Perfidious American Enemies" from the North
San Luis Potosi: May 8 1847. About very good. 2pp. Previously folded. Short closed tear and minor loss at edges of old horizontal fold. Small area of light staining. Accomplished in a neat secretarial script. A fascinating letter from the governor of San Luis Potosí Ramon Adame that relates reports on the northern front of the Mexican-American War written two months after the Battle of Saltillo and just days after the American invaders had captured Puebla to the south. The letter is addressed to Ignacio de Mora y Villamil the General-in-Chief of Mexico's northern army presumably with the goal of spurring action from his forces with this new information. Adame discusses troop movements and defenses in Real de Catorce and Matehuala to the north and relates reports from Mexican officers that 10000 American reinforcements were approaching Saltillo and Monterrey:<br /> <br /> "Los referidos Capitanes aseguraron que la proxima entrante semana hacian sino habian hecho ya movimiento en direccion a estos puntos las fuerzas enemigas en numero de ocho a die mil hombres: que de Agua Nueva al Saltillo hay de cinco a seis mil y el resto en Monterey. En Matehuala hoy corre la voz unisona que dentro de quince o a los mas veinte dias deben llegarse por estas villas los enemigos."<br /> <br /> He then writes at length concerning the need to improve observation of the nefarious American enemies in order that news might be received quickly and directly and inquires as to how to pay for such agents:<br /> <br /> "Al vecindario a una finita para acordar medidas salvadores y principalmente que por carensia de fondos se espensare a una o dos personas que observase los moviminetos y direccion de los perfidos enemigos norte americanos no logre reuniera y ya la esperienca acreditada que no tienen efecto esta clase de emerciones. Lo que traslado a V.S. para conocimineto del E.S. Manuscript Letter Signed from a Local Mexican Business Associate to a Texas Merchant Who Supplied the American Army During the Mexican-American War
Carmago Mexico: June 21 1847. Very good. 2pp. in Spanish on a single folded sheet verso of integral leaf addressed on verso. Original mailing folds mild wrinkling minor toning to address panel small chip to outer blank portion of integral leaf. A hand-carried letter from a Mexican merchant or lawyer named Francisco Perez to Benjamin S. Grayson a Texas associate in Carmago Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Perez writes to Grayson about some legal actions and the transfer of certain tercieros sharecroppers bound in servitude through Mexico's feudal hacienda system. Grayson may have threatened legal action against Perez. The letter reads in part in rough English translation: "D. Pedro Garcia left ten sharecroppers at my house the same ones the Mayor Jose Pio Salinas received at my door. These same ten sharecroppers were part of the twenty-one sharecroppers you and Mr. Davis told me the mayor gave to you. You can be sure that if I thought I owed you that I would have asked you for time to satisfy you. I would not have needed the courts to tell me. I am fully satisfied with the time you allowed for this trial to end. I know that the law has stopped the fugitives. It is very good that the lawyer knew the case and agreed with the term of twenty-seven days. Mr. Ate. l wants to explain to us why you should be satisfied with it. The results of the trial will be enforced by the judge; laws against the two legitimate debtors will be rigorously executed. Without objection I wait for your orders."<br /> <br /> Benjamin S. Grayson and his brother Thomas Wigg Grayson relocated to Texas from South Carolina sometime before 1835 at which time Benjamin established a mercantile business. Both brothers became involved in the Texas Revolution and were part owners of the famous privateer the Thomas Toby which Thomas also captained. After Texas gained its independence Benjamin moved to San Antonio where he unsuccessfully ran for mayor. While there he purchased land script that had been used to pay Texas soldiers and became a wealthy landowner. Fearing malaria Grayson expanded his business to more remote locations in Mexico where he ran his business from haciendas in Monterrey and Carmago. When the American Army entered Mexico during the Mexican-American War it set up a base camp at Carmago from which Grayson provided supplies and equipment. Following his time in Mexico Grayson turned his attentions to the California Gold Rush. In early 1849 he personally led a mule train of goods presumably mining supplies from Mexico to Los Angeles. Grayson made another fortune grubstaking miners and acquired significant property around San Francisco where he died in July 1849. June 21 unknown

Mexico City: February 15 1847. Near fine. 1pp. Quarto on a folded folio sheet. A rare Mexican decree in which the acting Vice President of Mexico Valentin Gomez Farías gives President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna permission to leave office and fight the Mexican-American War in person. Shortly following the date that this announcement was made Santa Anna gathered roughly 14000 troops to fight General Zachary Taylor’s army of 5000 men at the Battle of Buena Vista. The proclamation is largely ceremonial since Santa Anna had already been in the field with his army for several weeks but it is nevertheless an interesting artifact of the northern campaign of the Mexican-American War. Mexico City: May 1 1847. Near fine. 1pp. plus integral blank. Minor wear. An exceedingly rare decree from acting President of Mexico Pedro MarÃa de Anaya ordering that Mexico City be closed and declared besieged. “That it is in the interest of the defense of this capital and of the Nation as a whole to take the necessary measures to contain the enemy's advances.†Que conviniendo á la defensa de esta capital y á la comun de la Nacion tomar las providencias necesarias para contener los pregresos del enemigo. This decree was issued on the same day that Puebla Mexico’s second-largest city fell to the the American forces under Winfield Scott advancing from Veracruz. Secretary of State and Officer of War and Navy of Mexico José Ignacio Gutierrez issued this decree for circulation. General Winfield Scott paused in Puebla in order to gather supplies and reinforcements and then attacked Mexico City in August of 1847. Three Manuscript Letters Sent to Aristarchus Champion from New York Correspondents Just Following the Mexican-American War Concerning Mexican Claims New York Real Estate Prices a Proposed "Road to Lake Erie" and Art Purchases
New York 1850. Very good. Three manuscript letters totaling nine pages and approximately X words. All on single folded sheets all addressed on the verso of the second leaf. Old mailing folds minor foxing and wear small hole in second leaf of two letters from removed wax seals. An informative trio of manuscript letters sent by Thomas Spencer and William W. Bliss from New York City to Aristarchus Champion in Rochester. Aristarchus Champion 1784-1871 was a Yale graduate in 1807 and spent a long career as a lawyer real estate speculator and philanthropist. He was involved in business dealings with both of his correspondents here and the letters detail some of those activities. The letter by Thomas Spencer is dated April 10 1849 and concerns business dealings relating to both Mexican claims and New York real estate. Spencer writes in detail about a farm he attempted to sell "for the Mexican claims but could not make it go." He also discusses further speculation in Mexican claims in a long paragraph on the second page throwing out numbers like $50000 and $90000 as proposed totals for various deals before returning to further detailed discussion on the prospects of selling his farm. The remaining two letters are written to Champion by William M. Bliss a business associate of Champion's. In his first letter here written in January 1849 Bliss writes about the state of bonds potential liens and other financial matters relating to his company's business interests with regard to a new "road to Lake Erie" and Binghamton. Bliss's second letter is entirely concerned with the potential purchase of several paintings including a "landscape on the Delaware River" by Walter Mason Oddie and a "scene in Gray's elegy" by an English emigrant artist who has become "an adopted citizen" of the United States. Bliss notes several prices in the process of discussing these various paintings. These letters concern a wide range of business dealings in New York in the mid-19th century including Mexican claims and current art prices providing a solid opportunity for studying contemporary real estate and art markets. unknown

The cataloguer at the Bancroft Library describes the organization of the work thus: "Alphabetical catalog of the names of streets plazas and other locations in Mexico City based on an earlier version from 1783 which was printed during the tenure of interim viceroy Martin de Mayorga following the division of the city into 8 major districts quarteles and 32 sub-districts. Descriptions by the author—'un amante de la patria'—of the location and boundaries of each of the major districts is followed by an alphabetical list of the names of streets alleys bridges plazas courtyards and inns each identified with corresponding number of district and sub-district in which it is located. The pamphlet concludes with a directory of the members of the Superintendencia de Policìa y Tranquilidad Puìblica a body created by Viceroy Francisco Xavier Venegas." As others have noted bibliographies call for an engraved plan almost never found with this publication. It is also lacking in the Bancroft and almost all other institutional copies. Rare first-hand documentation of the growing trade tensions that eventually led to the French-Mexican “Pastry War†of 1838. Consul Hersant’s gossipy report surveys the “commercial movement of the port of Tampico since it’s opening in 1824 until the end of 1832.†Hersant complains to his superiors that Mexican trade with the US and England far outpaces France; even the Hanseatic League has become a problem. The Consul includes a hand-drawn table tallying foreign ships and the weight of goods by country a visual aid supporting his claim that French trade lags considerably behind other partners. <br /> <br /> Ultimately it is civil disorder that most disturbs the Consul; that is smuggling assisted by the Mexican customs officers themselves: "se fait impunément et avec l'aide des douaniers eux-mêmes et peut porter au double la quantité de marchandises qui entrent du dehors." Indeed the early years of the Mexican Republic were marked by a notable lack of governmental accountability toward foreign governments or private property owners as various internal parties struggled for power. This disregard eventually led King Louis-Philippe’s government to sue for damages against Mexico on behalf of French citizens doing business there. The most famous claimant was a pastry chef who claimed his shop had been looted. In 1838 when the amount went unpaid the French invaded Veracruz and blockaded Mexico’s Atlantic ports beginning the so-called Pastry War.<br /> <br /> References to Hersant can be found in other histories of the French attempt to gain ground in Mexico e.g. establishing alternative shipping passages inland to compete with North American traders. Overall a scarce pair of documents in excellent condition with minimal normal wear. unknown

A brief but grandiose celebration of and pledge of loyalty to the new Spanish Constitution of 1812 offered by the garrison of Mexico City. The new form of government was in great part an attempt to assuage colonial discontent and among other things promised colonies representation in the Spanish Cortes. The author riffs on the garrison's motto of "Amor Lealtad y Union" and offers several verses in praise of each as well as one for the nation. An engraving of the coat of arms also bearing the motto is tipped in between the title page and first leaf of text. An interesting representation of reaction to the promulgation of the new constitution in Mexico. OCLC lists three copies in U.S. institutions at Yale Berkeley and the University of Texas. This law was promulgated at the end of 1856 by the new liberal government of Mexico following its ascendancy in the mid-1850s and preceded the reform Constitution of 1857 by two months. Its statutes defined "crimes against the independence and security of the nation" including various forms of treason rebellion and foreign military service or assistance and made them punishable by death. The law anticipated conservative resistance and revolt against the new policies of the liberal faction that aimed to strip power and influence from the church and traditional aristocracy of the country. Their efforts indeed led to full-scale civil war in 1858 and the second French intervention in the early 1860s. Autobiography of Joos Verplanke Spring Lake Michigan Written during Winter of 1921
Spring Lake Michigan 1921. Twelve 8 ½ x 11 inch pages affixed to backing sheet. Wear marginal damage and some tearing to backing sheet; pages folded with some wrinkling; excellent. Joos Verplanke 1844–1943 was born in Zeeland The Netherlands and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1849. They settled in Holland Michigan and besides his time serving in the Union Army Verplanke would live in the Ottawa County area for the rest of his life. Offered here is a short memoir written by Verplanke for his children in 1921 when he was in his late 70s.<br /> <br /> The Verplanke family came to the US as part of the wave of immigration that followed the Dutch Reformed Church secession and the economic downturn in The Netherlands in the 1830s. Some Seceder church leaders such as Albertus Van Raalte felt that they were being religiously persecuted by the government and that staying in The Netherlands was religiously and economically untenable for their congregants.1 By the mid-1840s several Seceder ministers had formed emigration societies to help their parishioners leave for the US. As Verplanke puts it “They went in order to live where they could be free in religious matters as they had not been entirely free in the Netherlands during the thirties.â€<br /> <br /> Joos Verplanke and his family left Biervliet Zeeland in 1849 to join the Dutch colony in what would become Holland Michigan—but they and others in their party ran out of funds by Albany. The group was sent to “the Poor Houseâ€; many including Verplanke’s mother and younger brother died from cholera and the group was forced to leave. Arriving in Grand Haven Michigan they were assisted by a farmer who had also immigrated from The Netherlands a few years prior. The farmer fed and housed the family and eventually raised funds for them to continue to Holland. In fact this ethos was important to the Dutch immigrants; some Seceder emigration societies had provisions that money would be pooled so that the richer immigrants could help the poorer reach the colony.1<br /> <br /> The Verplankes arrived destitute in Holland. Joos Verplanke describes the colony:<br /> <br /> “Holland was a very new colony practically in the woods with a few stores a few small houses. The Government land was taken up by these colonists. Rev. VanDerMeulen had settled in Zeeland. Rev. Ypma im Vriesland Rev. Bolks in Overisel and others in Graafscap; each in his colony. A few of the immigrants had money but most had just enough to get them here. It was very hard for them in this wild timbered country so different from the cultivated and thickly settled Netherlands. None of them had ever handled an axe. . However encouraged by their ministers they were determined to learn to use the axe and chop out a place where they could worship God as they wished which they had not been allowed to do in the Netherlands some time before.â€<br /> <br /> In 1862 Verplanke enlisted with the Union Army. He recalls training:<br /> <br /> “We were in Holland two weeks training. Had a jolly time everyone was good to us. We could have anything we wanted. All the beer we wanted to as there was no prohibition those days.â€<br /> <br /> He recalls the unit fighting Morgan’s raiders at “Tip’s Bend†Tebbs Bend Kentucky fighting in Knoxville and with Sherman on his March to the Sea. He also recalls his short-lived desertion from the steamer Matanzas in Washington:<br /> <br /> “So crowded was the boat that there was no room to lie down not even on the upper deck. I thought if I can get off I will not go with this boat. I talked to a few of the boys and they agreed with me. Just then the gang planks were hauled in so we could not sneak off that way. I looked over and noticed along the boat’s side the whale-fenders were hanging by ropes. We threw our knapsacks and slide sic down the ropes. . The next morning we went to headquarters and I told some kind of a story about getting left. . Though we had been booked as deserters there was nothing more said of it. So we remembered only the fun we had out of what might have proved to be a very bad venture.â€<br /> <br /> Verplanke mustered out in June of 1865. He became the town marshall in Holland and in 1876 successfully ran as a Democrat for Ottawa County Sheriff despite the county’s Republican lean. He ran again two years later as a Greenback. The Greenback Party was an agrarian anti-monopoly and pro- monetary and labor reform party but Verplanke frames his running as a Greenback as a practical decision: “I knew if I accepted the Greenback nomination I was almost certain of victory. . I needed it badly as I had spent so much money in electioneering†for the previous election.<br /> Verplanke farmed in Crockery Township and then moved to Spring Lake where he authored this document for the benefit of his nine living sons.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Dutch settlement of Michigan following the Dutch Reformed Church split and those immigrants’ participation in the Civil War and American political life.<br /> <br /> 1 Robert P. Bound in 20th century grey cloth by Meister and Smethie titled in black to spine and front board. 369pp. The later cloth binding is strong and functional clearly following the brief of holding the book together for a century without too much attention to aesthetics some light scuffing and edgewear perhaps a little discolouration here and there but constructed of the kind of book cloth that will outlast an earthquake. A very good copy by virtue of completeness and solidity. Internally clean albeit with a rather brutal stitching job to the text block which has resulted in the prelims being a little loose in the gutter. Inscribed in pencil to the front flyleaf by the editor who was also the bereaved sister of the book's subject Major General Earl Van Dorn of the Confederate Army:<br /> "From 'Aunt Emily' Vandorn to Constance Kearny Vertner"<br /> Constance Kearny Vertner's pencil ownership is also present on the front flyleaf she was indeed Emily's niece being the daughter of her elder sister Jane who married Senator John Vertner of Lexington Kentucky which is quite the collection of Southern aristocracy. <br /> The book itself was an attempt by Emily Van Dorn to salvage something of the reputation of her dead brother after his death at the hands of a man whose wife and possibly 15 year old daughter rumours abound he was said to be having an affair with. On the face of it Major General Van Dorn was an extremely gifted cavalry commander and a less gifted infantry officer who cut his teeth fighting the Cheyenne in the US Army and later ended up fighting the US Army distinguishing himself at 2nd Corinth the Raid on Holly Ridge and other engagements. The General's reputation for womanising however and his erratic military performance when commanding anything other than his beloved cavalry caused him to be a dangerous combination of lauded and highly suspect depending upon who you asked. His eventual death shot in the back of the head by Dr. George Peters of Tennessee was met with sadness and censure but little surprise. The customary thing to do at the time regarding a man killed whilst committing adultery was to express public disdain and condemnation whilst keeping one's true feelings private. Emily Van Dorn's published attempts at salvage made it quite clear that whilst his contemporaries and colleagues might have tutted in public the sympathies and memories they expressed to her and her family suggested otherwise. There was also the added suggestion that Dr. Peters acted on behalf of the Union and that he received a mysterious and substantial land grant in Arkansas in payment. Emily Van Dorn perhaps unsurprisingly held to this version of events. A scarce book in any condition and even more so with a family association. The Abbey Press unknown

An important and substantial dossier of depositions and interrogation reports compiled by Captain E.W. Scott 2 Australian War Crimes Section investigating alleged war crimes and the fate of allied soldiers in New Guinea during the Second World War
First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Foolscap folio 253 leaves of duplicate typescript printed rectos only containing 118 depositions or interrogation reports of between 1 and 6 pages each with several diagrams some in colour. Post-bound in the original cloth-backed folder now a little creased and worn with three holes punched in the front cover; one leaf detached; a few tears and other signs of age and use; overall in very good condition. These retained duplicate typescripts comprise 51 depositions signed by the deponent interpreter if applicable and Scott as Investigating Officer and 67 interrogation reports signed by Scott alone. The interrogations took place between 13 January 1949 and 27 January 1950 in Tokyo. The investigation focuses on the activities of the Nankai Shitai South Seas Detachment of the Japanese Army and the Kempeitai Military Police in relation to the treatment of prisoners of war and non-combatants in the Madang area of northern New Guinea. <p>Many of the interrogations concern: the capture of VX148 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Samuel Key commanding officer of 2/14th Australian Infantry Battalion captured near Kokoda in 1942 and presumed dead; the disappearance of missionaries near Alexishafen; the execution and mistreatment of local 'native' people; and the fate of a downed aircrew brought aboard the ship 'Matsue Maru' in the Coral Sea. <p>Several of the depositions give first- or second-hand accounts of the execution of prisoners. One gives an eye-witness account of the massacre of some 300 Australian troops at Laha airfield Ambon with diagrams showing the sites of the executions. Another describes the execution of Australian airmen at Matupi crater near Rabaul also with a diagram. In yet another Colonel Miki professes to be shocked to hear of the maltreatment of prisoners by soldiers under his command: 'I was very surprised to hear about the unhappy event and the circumstances under which an Australian soldier was drowned and the subsequent torture and ill-treatment of witnesses which followed . I never heard any complaints from the prisoners'. <p>Elsewhere there are references to Changi Sandakan prisoners of war sent to Japan Blakang Mati Sentosa and United States Air Force personnel. <p>The files are arranged in reverse chronological order with the most recent at the top and a manuscript index of the files compiled by Scott quarto 3 leaves rectos only is mounted on the inside surface of the front cover. hardcover
