‎[Michigan – Euro-American Immigration – 1834 Dutch Reformed Church Split – Civil War] Verplanke, Joos‎

‎Autobiography of Joos Verplanke Spring Lake Michigan Written during Winter of 1921‎

‎Spring Lake Michigan 1921. Twelve 8 ½ x 11 inch pages affixed to backing sheet. Wear marginal damage and some tearing to backing sheet; pages folded with some wrinkling; excellent. Joos Verplanke 1844–1943 was born in Zeeland The Netherlands and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1849. They settled in Holland Michigan and besides his time serving in the Union Army Verplanke would live in the Ottawa County area for the rest of his life. Offered here is a short memoir written by Verplanke for his children in 1921 when he was in his late 70s.

The Verplanke family came to the US as part of the wave of immigration that followed the Dutch Reformed Church secession and the economic downturn in The Netherlands in the 1830s. Some Seceder church leaders such as Albertus Van Raalte felt that they were being religiously persecuted by the government and that staying in The Netherlands was religiously and economically untenable for their congregants.1 By the mid-1840s several Seceder ministers had formed emigration societies to help their parishioners leave for the US. As Verplanke puts it “They went in order to live where they could be free in religious matters as they had not been entirely free in the Netherlands during the thirties.â€

Joos Verplanke and his family left Biervliet Zeeland in 1849 to join the Dutch colony in what would become Holland Michigan—but they and others in their party ran out of funds by Albany. The group was sent to “the Poor Houseâ€; many including Verplanke’s mother and younger brother died from cholera and the group was forced to leave. Arriving in Grand Haven Michigan they were assisted by a farmer who had also immigrated from The Netherlands a few years prior. The farmer fed and housed the family and eventually raised funds for them to continue to Holland. In fact this ethos was important to the Dutch immigrants; some Seceder emigration societies had provisions that money would be pooled so that the richer immigrants could help the poorer reach the colony.1

The Verplankes arrived destitute in Holland. Joos Verplanke describes the colony:

“Holland was a very new colony practically in the woods with a few stores a few small houses. The Government land was taken up by these colonists. Rev. VanDerMeulen had settled in Zeeland. Rev. Ypma im Vriesland Rev. Bolks in Overisel and others in Graafscap; each in his colony. A few of the immigrants had money but most had just enough to get them here. It was very hard for them in this wild timbered country so different from the cultivated and thickly settled Netherlands. None of them had ever handled an axe. . However encouraged by their ministers they were determined to learn to use the axe and chop out a place where they could worship God as they wished which they had not been allowed to do in the Netherlands some time before.â€

In 1862 Verplanke enlisted with the Union Army. He recalls training:

“We were in Holland two weeks training. Had a jolly time everyone was good to us. We could have anything we wanted. All the beer we wanted to as there was no prohibition those days.â€

He recalls the unit fighting Morgan’s raiders at “Tip’s Bend†Tebbs Bend Kentucky fighting in Knoxville and with Sherman on his March to the Sea. He also recalls his short-lived desertion from the steamer Matanzas in Washington:

“So crowded was the boat that there was no room to lie down not even on the upper deck. I thought if I can get off I will not go with this boat. I talked to a few of the boys and they agreed with me. Just then the gang planks were hauled in so we could not sneak off that way. I looked over and noticed along the boat’s side the whale-fenders were hanging by ropes. We threw our knapsacks and slide sic down the ropes. . The next morning we went to headquarters and I told some kind of a story about getting left. . Though we had been booked as deserters there was nothing more said of it. So we remembered only the fun we had out of what might have proved to be a very bad venture.â€

Verplanke mustered out in June of 1865. He became the town marshall in Holland and in 1876 successfully ran as a Democrat for Ottawa County Sheriff despite the county’s Republican lean. He ran again two years later as a Greenback. The Greenback Party was an agrarian anti-monopoly and pro- monetary and labor reform party but Verplanke frames his running as a Greenback as a practical decision: “I knew if I accepted the Greenback nomination I was almost certain of victory. . I needed it badly as I had spent so much money in electioneering†for the previous election.
Verplanke farmed in Crockery Township and then moved to Spring Lake where he authored this document for the benefit of his nine living sons.

Of interest to scholars of the Dutch settlement of Michigan following the Dutch Reformed Church split and those immigrants’ participation in the Civil War and American political life.

1 Robert P. Swierenga “‘By the Sweat of our Brow’: Economic Aspects of the Dutch Immigration to Michigan†lecture at the A.C. ‎[MILITARIA] [CIVIL WAR] [Editor MILLER, Emily Van Dorn]‎

‎A Soldier's Honor By His Comrades‎

‎New York: The Abbey Press 1902. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo. 20cm. Bound in 20th century grey cloth by Meister and Smethie titled in black to spine and front board. 369pp. The later cloth binding is strong and functional clearly following the brief of holding the book together for a century without too much attention to aesthetics some light scuffing and edgewear perhaps a little discolouration here and there but constructed of the kind of book cloth that will outlast an earthquake. A very good copy by virtue of completeness and solidity. Internally clean albeit with a rather brutal stitching job to the text block which has resulted in the prelims being a little loose in the gutter. Inscribed in pencil to the front flyleaf by the editor who was also the bereaved sister of the book's subject Major General Earl Van Dorn of the Confederate Army:
"From 'Aunt Emily' Vandorn to Constance Kearny Vertner"
Constance Kearny Vertner's pencil ownership is also present on the front flyleaf she was indeed Emily's niece being the daughter of her elder sister Jane who married Senator John Vertner of Lexington Kentucky which is quite the collection of Southern aristocracy.
The book itself was an attempt by Emily Van Dorn to salvage something of the reputation of her dead brother after his death at the hands of a man whose wife and possibly 15 year old daughter rumours abound he was said to be having an affair with. On the face of it Major General Van Dorn was an extremely gifted cavalry commander and a less gifted infantry officer who cut his teeth fighting the Cheyenne in the US Army and later ended up fighting the US Army distinguishing himself at 2nd Corinth the Raid on Holly Ridge and other engagements. The General's reputation for womanising however and his erratic military performance when commanding anything other than his beloved cavalry caused him to be a dangerous combination of lauded and highly suspect depending upon who you asked. His eventual death shot in the back of the head by Dr. George Peters of Tennessee was met with sadness and censure but little surprise. The customary thing to do at the time regarding a man killed whilst committing adultery was to express public disdain and condemnation whilst keeping one's true feelings private. Emily Van Dorn's published attempts at salvage made it quite clear that whilst his contemporaries and colleagues might have tutted in public the sympathies and memories they expressed to her and her family suggested otherwise. There was also the added suggestion that Dr. Peters acted on behalf of the Union and that he received a mysterious and substantial land grant in Arkansas in payment. Emily Van Dorn perhaps unsurprisingly held to this version of events. A scarce book in any condition and even more so with a family association. The Abbey Press unknown‎

‎[Militaria] [War Crimes]. SCOTT, VX14040 Captain Eric Walter‎

‎An important and substantial dossier of depositions and interrogation reports compiled by Captain E.W. Scott 2 Australian War Crimes Section investigating alleged war crimes and the fate of allied soldiers in New Guinea during the Second World War‎

‎First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Foolscap folio 253 leaves of duplicate typescript printed rectos only containing 118 depositions or interrogation reports of between 1 and 6 pages each with several diagrams some in colour. Post-bound in the original cloth-backed folder now a little creased and worn with three holes punched in the front cover; one leaf detached; a few tears and other signs of age and use; overall in very good condition. These retained duplicate typescripts comprise 51 depositions signed by the deponent interpreter if applicable and Scott as Investigating Officer and 67 interrogation reports signed by Scott alone. The interrogations took place between 13 January 1949 and 27 January 1950 in Tokyo. The investigation focuses on the activities of the Nankai Shitai South Seas Detachment of the Japanese Army and the Kempeitai Military Police in relation to the treatment of prisoners of war and non-combatants in the Madang area of northern New Guinea.
Many of the interrogations concern: the capture of VX148 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Samuel Key commanding officer of 2/14th Australian Infantry Battalion captured near Kokoda in 1942 and presumed dead; the disappearance of missionaries near Alexishafen; the execution and mistreatment of local 'native' people; and the fate of a downed aircrew brought aboard the ship 'Matsue Maru' in the Coral Sea.
Several of the depositions give first- or second-hand accounts of the execution of prisoners. One gives an eye-witness account of the massacre of some 300 Australian troops at Laha airfield Ambon with diagrams showing the sites of the executions. Another describes the execution of Australian airmen at Matupi crater near Rabaul also with a diagram. In yet another Colonel Miki professes to be shocked to hear of the maltreatment of prisoners by soldiers under his command: 'I was very surprised to hear about the unhappy event and the circumstances under which an Australian soldier was drowned and the subsequent torture and ill-treatment of witnesses which followed . I never heard any complaints from the prisoners'.
Elsewhere there are references to Changi Sandakan prisoners of war sent to Japan Blakang Mati Sentosa and United States Air Force personnel.
The files are arranged in reverse chronological order with the most recent at the top and a manuscript index of the files compiled by Scott quarto 3 leaves rectos only is mounted on the inside surface of the front cover. hardcover‎

‎[Military & War] [Barbados] [Race] [John R Eggleston]‎

‎1858 letter written aboard the USS Atlanta in Barbados from a future officer in the Confederate Navy and witness to the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. Contents include a racist rant against free blacks in Barbados‎

‎Barbados: n.p. 1858. Letter. Good. Letter. 8" x 10". 4 pages. 3 pages of contents. Page 4 clipped section at bottom. Paper folded and in very good condition otherwise.

Letter written aboard the USS Atlanta at Barbados December 27 1858. Eggleston writes: "I am perfectly willing to leave Barbados and its free impertinent darkies. I would like to lasso some 50 or 100 and put them to work in a cotton field. I am convinced that such a field is the only one in which the darky character can be truly developed. Here they do nothing but stroll about the streets & chatter like so many monkeys from sunrise to sunset. We employ them to coal our vessels and how I have wished for Jack Stringer with a bull whip among them whenever I have had anything to do with them".

Eggleston would later serve as a Lieutenant on the CSS Virginia and was later promoted to Captain in the Confederate Navy. Eggleston was one of the lieutenants of the Virginia Merrimac during its life under the Confederate flag. During his life Eggleston provided details of the legendary battle of the two ironclad ships which can be found under various web sites. n.p. unknown‎

‎[Military and War] [Georgia] [James Monroe] [General Andrew Jackson]‎

‎Message From the President of the United States Transmitting Information Required by a Resolution of the House of Representatives of December 24 1818 of Certain Correspondence Between the Department of War and the Governor of Georgia; and the Said Department with General Andrew Jackson‎

‎Washington City: Printed by E. De Krafft 1819. Wraps. Very good. Disbound wraps approx. 8.5" x 6". 7 pages 1 page blank. Light toning to the contents.

Contents of this brief communication cite James Monroe J. C. Calhoun and an "extract of a letter from Major C. Vandeventer chief clerk to major general Andrew Jackson dated "Department of War June 2d 1818." The contents of page 7 read "Your letters of the 7th of April one without date from Fort Gadsden and on the 26th of April are received. "The President of the United States and the Secretary of War are out of town. The former will return about the 15th instant the latter not before the middle of next month. So soon as the President returns your dispatches together with your order to Major Davis commanding the arrest of captain Wright and a copy of your letter to the governor of Georgia in relation to the horrid and atrocious destruction of the Chehaw village will be laid before him. In the mean time I am advised to communicate the 'opinion' that the trial of captain Wright by court martial is decidedly preferable to a civil prosecution in the federal court." Captain Wright and his Georgia Militia from Twiggs and Jones County attacked a friendly Creek village on the Flint River killing upwards from 5-50 members of the peaceful tribe more source information can be found from the Georgia Historical Quarterly December 1965 article by Merton Coulter. From the Albany Herald - Accounts of the incident now mostly lost to history or obscured by time vary. But most agree that the treachery of Capt. Obed Wright cost the lives of at least seven men one woman and two children although Wright himself estimated that number to be as high as 50. “Wright reported that about 24 warriors were killed and since some of the houses had their doors shut and guns were being fired from crevices the buildings were fired and some of the inhabitants burned to death†documents within the 2004 Southwest Georgia Archaeological Survey explain. “Wright estimated the total killed to be between 40 and 50.†Wright was ultimately arrested for his crimes primarily due to the outrage of Jackson but the murdering captain in the end managed to escape disappearing into Spanish-occupied Florida according to accounts from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. ‎[Missouri]: [Civil War]: Benecke, Louis‎

‎Some Light Upon a Chariton County Episode of '64 wrapper title‎

‎N.p. but likely Brunswick Mo 1892. 13pp. Original printed wrappers sewn. Minor rubbing to title minor edge wear. Small ownership label on inside front wrapper. Very good. Louis Benecke's defense against accusations involving the murder of a Missouri Bushwhacker during the Civil War. On August 8 1864 William Carter a Union soldier visiting his mother at the family farm near Kaytesville Missouri "was taken prisoner by Bushwhcker Jim Jackson's gang stripped naked tied to a tree in the yard and shot at by the gang till his body was riddled with over thirty bullets and he was then left for dead still tied to the tree." The author of the present work Louis Benecke captain of Company I of the 49th Missouri Volunteers was rumored to have retaliated by killing "one of the participants in that murder." Here Benecke defends his good name against such slanders through contemporary orders affidavits and other material that refute the notion that he was involved. Benecke writes that "I was a mere boy when placed in responsible positions surrounded by intense partisan feeling hatred revenge and all that helped to bring about the unfortunate condition of things as they were in 1864-65." Most of the affidavits come from Missouri with one from Ohio and another from Texas.

"Reciting the events surrounding the death of William Carter of the 35th Regiment E. M. M. at the hands of Bushwhacker Jim Jackson's Gang and the killing of J. W. Leonard of the gang in retaliation; Benecke then in command at Brunswick Mo. now a politician finds himself under attack as one of those who had killed the bushwacker Leonard. In refutation he herein publishes a number of affidavits shedding much light on guerilla activities in Chariton County Missouri during the days of bushwackers" - Midland Notes 87:117.

Not in Dornbusch Nevins Nicholson or Eberstadt. Due to the lack of an imprint in the work results from OCLC are a bit muddled with over a dozen copies reported with publication dates between 1892 and 1895. unknown‎

‎[Montand, Yves] - [Resnais, Alain] - Folon, Jean-Michel (1934-2005)‎

‎Operations in Persia 1914-1919. Facsimile Edition with Introduction by Dr. G.M. Bayliss. [Official History of WW1]. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., Second Edition, with 9 plates on 6, 8 folding maps coloured in outline and 6 large folding coloured maps in pocket at end; original series binding of red cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in the dustwrapper, the latter lightly sunned at backstrip. Compiled at the request of the Government of India, this is one of the so-called 'mystery' volumes in the British official history of the First World War. Printed in an edition of just five hundred copies by HMSO in 1929, its very existence was classified because of political objections on the part of the Indian Office. This much-needed facsimile reissue gives a detailed account of the British military involvement in Persia between 1914 and 1919 and goes on to reveal the story behind the book's suppression.‎

‎[MURORAN - PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF US FORCES IN HOKKAIDO DURING THE KOREAN WAR].‎

‎米州兵輸送. Beishūhei yusō. Muroran Welcomes the Thunderbirds. 25 April 1951.‎

‎Japan. 1951. Eight black and white photographs 20.5 x 25.5cm each captioned in Japanese the handmade album is titled and dated in ink 23.5 x 32.8cm 9pp cord ties. One photograph has been removed card leaves and covers are browned surface of upper cover abraded in places some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran Hokkaido on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City" indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division nicknamed the Thunderbirds one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma.

The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950 and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951 arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel" which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers as they peruse a large map and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer.

Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN mostly American forces during the Korean War although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War. . unknown‎
