‎New York: Frederick Fell 1966. First Edition. First Printing. Special Limited Edition number of copies unknown. 8vo. 21cm x 14cm. Publisher's full black leather titled in gilt to spine with decorative gilt ruling to the front board. Clean and handsome. In a black cloth slipcase duplicating the design of the dustjacket for the trade edition. Inscribed on an inserted handmade paper limitation page with some a rather lavish gold ink limitation statement by the author and his wife:<br /> "Mimi and Marguerite with the deep love and affection of The Kruegers Dec. 4 1966 Carl Krueger Ida Krueger"<br /> Billed as "The First Novel of The Vietnam War" and definitely early although according to Newman's bibliographical survey of Vietnam War fiction this rather showy and gung ho novel ranks as the 12th published novel although only 3 novels were published in 1965 whilst the next 25 or so all made na appearance in 1966. This limited presentation issue of the first edition seems completely unknown. Krueger was a decidedly old school author and screenwriter from the post WW2 adventure cinema genre he has writing credits on "Comanche" and "Sabre Jet" both scorching technicolour action movies. He produced the Wyler/Sturges wartime propaganda documentary "Thunderbolt" in 1944 and seems to have had a leaning towards spectacular aircraft movies where the machines occupied as much if not more screen time as the human actors. That certainly seems to have been the intention here it's very aircraft heavyobsessed with the Phantom II and the Vietnamese characters are portrayed as either Machiavellian or offensively stupid. The trade edition dustwrapper bears the statement: "Mr Krueger will personally produce Wings of The Tiger as the greatest air spectacle ever filmed." As far as can be established Mr. Krueger did not. Regardless of anything else it's an interesting illustration of the fact that going into Vietnam with a WW2 mindset was not something exclusively limited to armchair strategists and DC pundits it was also prevalent among those writing and filming accounts of the conflict. Title translates as, “Wolozin: the book of the city and of the Etz Hayyim Yeshivah.” Includes articles in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Includes bibliographical references. “On 17 September 1939, the first day of the Soviet invasion of Poland, Valozhyn was occupied by the Red Army. On 14 November 1939, Valozhyn was incorporated into the Byelorussian SSR. All previously allowed religious studies were forbidden. On the fourth day of Operation Barbarossa, on 25 June, 1941 Valozhyn was bombed, captured by troops of the German Army Group Centre and mostly burned. Several Jews were murdered by German soldiers who entered the town. On the next day, a 12-member Judenrat was appointed by the Gestapo and shortly after Stanislaw Torsky, a member of the Polish National Democrats ‘Endek’ party with strongly antisemitic views, was appointed mayor. On his second day as mayor, he ordered the arrest of the town doctor along with his daughter, and 10 other Jewish people, who were savagely beaten and shot. On 25 July 1941, Valozhyn was placed under the administration of the newly formed Generalbezirk Weißruthenien of Reichskommissariat Ostland. In August 1941, the Jewish residents of the town, approximately 3500 people, were moved to a Ghetto in the "Aropzu" neighbourhood, along with Jewish residents from the neighboring towns Vishnyeva, Halshany and Ashmyany. The Jews, as well as Russian prisoners in the area, were subjected to forced labour, tortured, underfed, and many of them publicly murdered. Local Christians who were caught having mercy or assisting the Jews in giving food received a similar fate…..On 5 July 1944, Valozhyn was recaptured by troops of the Soviet 3rd Belorussian Front during the Vilnius Offensive. Following its liberation, several Jews who returned openly to Valozhyn were murdered by local townspeople. It was initially raion centre in Navahrudak Voblast (1939), later in Baranavichy Voblast (1939–1944) and Molodechno Voblast (1944–1960) before passing to Minsk Region” (Wikipedia). An important broadside noting the deficiencies of the volunteer militia. One of two states this with the fourth line in bold-type. Opens: Commonwealth of Massachusetts. General orders. Head-quarters Boston June 17th 1815. : On the 15th inst. the following order of Council was passed viz.: "In Council June 15th 1815. The committee of Council to whom was referred a resolve of the legislature . respectfully report--that His Excellency be advised to issue his order for the discharge of all the volunteer corps raised for the defence of the commonwealth .":--By virtue therefore of the powers vested in him His Excellency the commander in chief hereby discharges from further service all the volunteer corps ."<br /> <br /> Brooks of course began by 1 thanking the men for "the generous patriotic and voluntary tender of services for the defence of the Commonwealth at the most threatening period of the late war and the assiduity and zeal displayed by those Corps in training themselves for usefulness in the field without expense to the State." 2 discharge them from further service" and 3 ordering "all officers and others who may have received from the Commonwealth ordnance arms or munitions of war of any kind for the use or on account of any of those Corps to cause the same to be forthwith returned to the Quarter Master General at Boston." <br /> <br /> But more importantly he used the occasion to make military revisions for the future noting that "inconveniencies have arisen from restriction the election of company officers to the Wards" which he ordered changed and that "great irregularities" have followed "from the liberty that officers have taken to absent themselves for more than twelve months without leave from their Major Generals and the still more numerous evils resulting from officers removing their places of residence to such a distance from the bounds of their respective commands as to render discharge of their duty highly inconvenient and sometimes impossible." He ends by ordering wholesale changes in command structure.<br /> <br /> John Brooks 1752 -1825 a doctor by training a Federalist by disposition served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War later helped to put down Shay's Rebellion and at the conclusion of the War of 1812 was elected governor of Massachusetts less than a year after issuing this broadside.<br /> <br /> Rare. ‎Lengthy Soldier’s Letter Written in the Aftermath of the War of 1812 Discussing Personal Expenses Incurred During the Formation of a Company During the Conflict‎

‎Fort Richmond 1815. Single page bifolium 15 x 9 ½ inches. One area of loss measuring roughly an inch square and affecting the final paragraph of the letter else about fine. Circular New York stamp with manuscript rate at the war rate of 25 ½ cents. An uncommonly detailed letter written by a Captain D. Crawford of the 46th Infantry to Colonel Charles K. Gardner detailing his career in the army and asking Gardner to advocate on his behalf for further military service. Crawford’s letter gives a detailed account of the process of forming a company by his own endeavors writing “in the fall of 1812 without bounty when the pay of a Soldier was but 5 Dollars per month I almost entirely by my own exertions enlisted a Company of 75 Volunteers.†He continues to make his case both for his career and for his reimbursement stating “That we have been in no battles is our misfortune rather than our fault. We have done our duty.†It is possible that his lack of engagement was a cause of the withholding of funds. Overall an interesting and detailed account of a Captain’s experiences in the War of 1812 worthy of study for scholars of the United States military during the period. <br /> <br /> Fort Richmond S.I. April 28 1815<br /> <br /> Dear Sir <br /> <br /> Understanding that you have gone on to Washington and expecting you will remain there during the selection of Officers for the Peace Establishment I have thought proper to address you to make known my desire to continue in the Army and to solicit your assistance in that behalf wishing that through you the Secretary at War and the Officers directed to assist him may know my claims which will be briefly stated. <br /> <br /> It is well known to you Sir that in the fall of 1812 without bounty when the pay of a Soldier was but 5 Dollars per month I almost entirely by my own exertions enlisted a Company of 75 Volunteers. The character of the Regt. to which I was attached is sufficiently known. Col. Gray’s reports will show in what state my Company was always found. The term of service of the principal part of the men expired on the 5th Novr. 1813. They generally volunteered a second time to stay till the January 1814 and as the Officers of our Regt. had no orders to engage them for a longer time they were then discharged and the most of them reenlisted in the 41st & 42nd Regts.<br /> <br /> My appointment in the 46th Regt. is the 21st April 1814. The last of May following I was ordered on the recruiting service & during the Summer enlisted 49 men all except 2 for 5 years. I have rec’d $1000 only of the public money the amount necessary and that which is allowed by law to recruit the above number with the contingent account would be $3288 leaving a balance in my favor of $1788 a great part of which I have advanced and notwithstanding the exertions of Col. Tallmadge remains as yet unsettled. <br /> <br /> We shall have remaining in our Regt. for 5 years about 70 men. ‎<p>Pamphlet 8vo paperbound 16 pp. Partially disbound but still in tact. Normal aging and browning with some chips and folds at the extremities. Also slight fold at the center and early owner’s signature on title page. About very good. Very interesting pamphlet prepared during the Madison administration that takes a look at the challenges facing a new country. For the most part the report addresses the belligerent acts of England and France prior to the War of 1812. The report also challenges the legality of the British blockade and the taking of our ships on the high seas. Importantly it points out that France is no better than the English in this respect and that it would be hard to justify war against one without the same treatment of the other. However the authors were also very realistic about going to war with both England and France who were "two of the most powerful nations in the world". The report recommends that we not submit to French and English legal rationalizations for their actions and that we not allow their ships into our ports. The map assisted airman finding friendly lines and make their way back to safe havens. . This kind of map printed on thick silk was commonly worn as a flyer's neck scarf during combat flight missions. Some also wore a "Survival Vest" loaded with other valuable emergency use rations pistol & equipment designed to help airmen's "E & E" Escape & Evasion using these kinds of silk maps to return to friendly lines. . CONDITION: This map is fairly clean with a very small 'tone' area in upper right corner of sheet B it may just be some of the usual 'transfer' of pale color from the upper folded part on this as it is a similar tone. The two old mended small splits appear to be firm and solid. The edges are a bit frayed as usual by and large an excellent example of a vintage and exceptionally RARE World War 2 silk map. .
