A native of Virginia Ashley migrated to Missouri early in the first decade of the 19th century engaging in business first in St. Genevieve then in St. Louis before embarking on a career in public life that included service in the War of 1812 explorations of the first rank in the American West important contributions to the growth of the American fur trade and state and national political activity. "He organized the rendezvous system pioneered the employment of free trappers rather than hired trappers or Indian tribes established durable routes to the fur country and conducted important explorations . few individuals exercised a greater influence on the course of the fur trade in the Far West" Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography. For an extensive account of his career see Harrison Dale's "Ashley-Smith Explorations and the Discovery of a Central Route to the Pacific Arthur Clark 1918.
