Anfangs erschien Die Aktion wöchentlich, ab 1919 vierzehntäglich, ab 1926 nur noch unregelmäßig. Schon am 20. Februar 1911 erschien die erste Nummer der Aktion mit dem Untertitel "Zeitschrift für freiheitliche Politik und Literatur", der 1912 in "Wochenschrift für Politik, Literatur und Kunst" abgeändert wurde. Durch den Kontakt zu Hiller und dessen Freunden im Neuen Club, die unter der Bezeichnung Neopathetisches Cabaret Leseabende mit expressionistischen Künstlern organisierten, wurde Die Aktion rasch zum führenden Organ der neuen Richtung. Da es Pfemfert gelang, viele Autoren schnell bekannt zu machen und auch Verbindungen zu Verlegern wie Ernst Rowohlt und Samuel Fischer herzustellen, hatte er, obwohl er keine Honorare bezahlte, doch immer ausreichend Beiträge von hoher Qualität. Ab 1913 erschienen mehrere Sonderhefte, die nur Lyrik enthielten, darunter eine Nummer, die er ausschließlich dem Werk des im Januar 1912 jung verstorbenen Georg Heym widmete. Ab 1914 nahm der Anteil der grafischen Arbeiten zu, wobei besonders ausdrucksstarke Holzschnitte das Erscheinungsbild der Zeitschrift prägten. In der ersten Nummer umriss Pfemfert das Ziel der Aktion wie folgt: "Die Aktion tritt, ohne sich auf den Boden einer bestimmten politischen Partei zu stellen, für die Idee der Großen Deutschen Linken ein. Die Aktion will den imposanten Gedanken einer ?Organisierung der Intelligenz' fördern und dem lange verpönten Wort ?Kulturkampf' [?] wieder zu seinem alten Glanze verhelfen. In den Dingen der Kunst und Literatur sucht Die Aktion ein Gegengewicht zu bilden zu der traurigen Gewohnheit der pseudoliberalen Presse, neuere Regungen lediglich vom Geschäftsstandpunkt aus zu bewerten, also sie totzuschweigen." ? (wiki) // ... Im ersten Jahrgang der "Aktion" weisen die eingestreuten Verse auf kommende Möglichkeiten hin. Es war erst ein Anfang. Man sieht den Boden, auf dem das Neue entstehen konnte: die Verbindungslinien führen zur Berliner Boheme im ersten Jahrzehnt des Jahrhunderts, die Lyrik Liliencrons und Dehmels wirken fort, die Lebensanschauungen einer emanzipierten Gesellschaft deuten auf das ausgehende 19. Jahrhundert zurück. Es will scheinen, als habe diese Wochenschrift kein unbedingtes Profil. Schon die triste Typographie verlockte nicht, Neues zu vermuten. Doch die Zeitschrift hatte von Anfang an ein Programm. Sie wollte das "Organ des ehrlichen Radikalismus" sein. "Bei vollkommener Unabhängigkeit von Rechts oder von Links ist ,Die Aktion' eine Tribüne, von der aus jede Persönlichkeit, die Sagenswertes zu sagen hat, ungehindert sprechen kann." Auf dem Gebiete der Literatur und Kunst wollte die Zeitschrift junge Autoren zu Worte kommen lassen, denn sie sollte ein Gegengewicht werden "zu der traurigen Gewohnheit der pseudoliterarischen Presse, neuere Regungen lediglich vom Geschäftsstandpunkt aus zu bewerten, also sie totzuschweigen". Die "freiheitliche Politik" stand im Vordergrund. Pfemferts Kampf gegen Bethmann-Hollwegs Politik, gegen das Parteienwesen, gegen soziales Elend wurden unterstützt durch oft langatmige Aufsätze Otto Corbachs, eines damals viel gelesenen Kommentators, durch polemische Artikel des querköpfigen Pädagogen Ludwig Gurlitt, durch sozialkritische Beiträge von Grete Meisel-Hess, durch andere juristische, nationalökonomische und politische Aufsätze teils obskurer Mitarbeiter. Sachliche Berichte und heftige Angriffe, hymnische Würdigung und scharfe Kritik bestimmen den anderen Schwerpunkt des ersten Aktions-Jahrgangs: die "Literaturpolitik", wie Kurt Hiller einen Aufsatz überschrieb. Bewährte Publizisten wie Heinrich Ilgenstein und Max Jungnickel lieferten Aufsätze. Die Jüngeren schirieben einen frischeren Stil: Kurt Hiller, Anselm Ruest, Rudolf Kurtz, Heinrich Eduard Jacob, Rudolf Kayser und andere. Auch Erich Mühsam und Franz Pfemfert beteiligten sich an der Literaturkritik. Man besprach Berliner Theateraufführungen, Vorleseabende, neue Bücher, brachte Würdigungen über Heinrich Mann, Rilke und huldigte Alfred Kerr. Das alles unterscheidet die "Aktion" wenig von anderen bewährten Zeitschriften, etwa der "Neuen Rundschau", dem "März" oder der "Deutschen Rundschau". Anders ist der Eindruck der Dichtung selbst. Gewiß, auch hier findet man impressionistische Lyriker: Artur Silbergleit, Leo Sternberg, andere werden der jungen Generation zu Leitbildern: Wedekind, Lautensack, Scheerbart, Peter Hille. Die Berliner Boheme ist beteiligt: Paul Albrecht, Franz Vallentin, Siegmund Kalischer, Erich Mühsam, Else Lasker-Schüler. Aber es sind die Jungen, die interessieren: Georg Heym, Ernst Blass, Arthur Drey, Jakob van Hoddis, Kurt Hiller, Robert Jentzsch, Simon Ghuttmann, Arthur Kronfeld und viele andere. Ihre Gedichte sind das Programm der neuen Lyrik. Der ältere Ferdinand Harde-kopf schließt sich, an, S. Friedländer-Mynona veröffentlicht seine ersten Grotesken, aus Neiße schickt Max Herrmann Beiträge. Das junge Genie, mehr der Boheme als dem Kreis des Neuen Clubs zugehörig, war Victor Hadwiger, der Prager Dichter, der im Oktober 1911 starb, der erste Verlust, der die "Aktion" traf. Mit Georg Heyms Tod im Januar 1912 ging, möchte man sagen, schon eine erste Periode in der neuen literarischen Bewegung zu Ende. ? Si ce nom ne résonne que faiblement aujourd'hui en dehors de son Alsace natale, on ne saurait pour autant prétendre que celui qui fut l'avant-dernier président du Conseil de la IVe République et le prédécesseur à ce poste du général de Gaulle, n'a pas connu une riche et captivante vie publique. Triple carrière à dire vrai, puisque Pierre Pflimlin fut tour à tour et néammoins simultanément alsacien – maire de Strasbourg et député, il défendit les intérêts économiques de l'espace rhénan – , figure de la vie politique nationale non seulement en tant que chef de gouvernement mais aussi comme ministre de l'Agriculture, des Finances ou de la France d'outre-mer, et enfin européen convaincu – c'est sa profonde divergence de vues sur la construction de l'Europe qui le contraint à rompre avec de Gaulle en 1962. Rencontre avec l'Europe, rencontre avec l'Etat dont il se veut un ardent réformateur au plus fort des crises qui affectent la IVe République moribonde, rencontre enfin avec le général de Gaulle, « le seul grand homme que j'aie connu dans ma vie publique ». L'écrivain se met en scène aussi bien dans les textes de souvenirs d'enfance (La Maison de Claudine, Sido) ou de maturité (Mes apprentissages, Le Fanal bleu, L'Etoile Vesper), que dans les romans (La Naissance du jour, Bella-vista, Chambre d'hôtel...) – sans parler des transpositions (Claudine à l'école, La Vagabonde, Chéri, La Seconde...). Mais les événements se sont-ils déroulés tels qu'elle les a présentés ? Ne leur a-t-elle pas fait subir quelque distorsion, volontaire ou innocente ? Quelle part faut-il accorder à la création littéraire, à la poésie et à la vérité ? Dans le présent ouvrage, les auteurs se sont attachés à reconstituer la longue vie de l'écrivain (1873-1954), en se fondant uniquement sur des documents de première main : actes officiels, correspondances – en grande partie inédites –, articles de presse et témoignages de contemporains. Bien des "blancs" de la vie de Colette sont ainsi comblés. Plusieurs situations – le premier divorce, la carrière théâtrale, l'activité journalistique – sont éclairées d'une lumière tout à fait nouvelle. Et quelques légendes, dont certaines ont été créées par l'écrivain elle-même, sont ici écornées. Dorénavant, l'image de Sidonie Colette née Landoy ne coïncidera plus exactement avec celle de "Sido", ni celle de Gabrielle Colette-auteur avec celle de Colette-personnage ; quant à celle de "la bonne dame du Palais-Royal", elle subit quelques retouches. La distance entre la vie et sa représentation dans l'œuvre s'élargit.
