FIRST EDITION of THE INVENTION OF AUTOMATED CLINICAL ANALYSIS. "The automation technology introduced by Skeggs has become the indispensable backbone of modern clinical chemistry laboratories." Gedeon. "The autoanalyzer represented a significant advance in medical laboratory technology in the 20th century. This device developed by Leonard T. Skeggs ended the days in which laboratory technicians spent hours mixing reagents to test for substances in blood or urine. The autoanalyzer could perform over 20 tests in 24 seconds." "Leonard Skeggs earned his master's degree in 1941 and his PhD in 1948 in biochemistry at what would become Case Western Reserve University. He joined the faculty in 1950 became a full professor in 1969 and became emeritus professor in 1988. He was also director of the hypertension research laboratory at the Cleveland Veterans' Administration Hospital. Skeggs was affiliated with various well known Cleveland medical researchers including: Harry Goldblatt a pioneer in hypertension research Jack Leonards a former head of the biochemistry department at CWRU and Paul Berg who went on the win the Nobel Prize for his work on recombinant DNA." "Although Skeggs was involved in all of these important projects his major accomplishment remains the autoanalyzer. Fed up with long waits in for blood sample tests and confusion in the laboratory Skeggs decided to look for a better way. He stated that "One day it suddenly occurred to me that analyses could be done in a continuous flowing stream rather than batches or discretely." Skeggs set to work building his prototype. With borrowed money he bought the necessary materials. By 1951 a working model had been developed. Skeggs continuously improved and streamlined his design for the next 3 years. The instrument automatically mixed equal amounts of reagents and successive specimens and then measured the resulting color changes of each mixture." One of Skeggs' later designs the sequential multiple analyzer with computer SMAC series moved the state of the art from one test per specimen per minute to more than twenty tests every twenty-four seconds. The SMAC did its own calibrations and transmitted results directly to a laboratory computer. Fine condition.<br/><br/> American politician and secessionist who served as a member of the Arkansas State Convention in 1861. He entered the Confederate States Army in late 1861 and served as a Colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry under Major General Sterling Price. In the fall of 1864 while fighting in Kansas Slemons had his horse shot from under him and he and a large regiment were captured. For the remainder of the war he was held captive in several Union prisons.<br/><br/> unknown books‎

"Early in his career he was through the introduction of the late Sir William Jenner appointed to the Duke of Brabant afterwards Leopold II King of the Belgians and travelled with him in the East visiting India Ceylon and China. King Leopold whose physician he remained until that monarch's death appointed him a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold." He worked at a Children's hospital and gained a wide ranging respect for his personality and knowledge being well read and kind. Sir H. ‎This American artist is often remembered for his friendship with Carl Sandburg which resulted in his striking 1968 U.S. postage stamp; other stamps include his award-winning 1972 "Sidney Lanier" and the 4-stamp 1973 series "Rise of the Spirit of Independence." ANS 1p 8�" X 11" Pineville PA 1973 October 9. Addressed to Mr. Johnston. Near fine. Two horizontal mailing folds. Friendly "Thank you for your gratifying reaction and comment on my stamp designs." in Smith's handsome calligraphic hand. No doubt refers to his award-winning 4-stamp "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamps which had been released the previous month. Accompanied by a stunning 4pp heavy stock 8�" X 11" color leaflet issued in 1953. Near fine. Smith's 1978 centennial "Carl Sandburg" stamp which shows a left-facing Sandburg in profile was based on a charcoal portrait made much earlier showing a right-facing Sandburg published here for the first time in 1953 -- a full quarter century before its stamp appearance! The front cover of this glossy leaflet features this portrait which once open pages 2 and 3 shows on the lefthand side a manuscript fair copy of Sandburg's then-new poem "Names" in his distinctive script dated from Connemara Farm Flat Rock North Carolina 25 December 1952. The righthand side shows the same text beautifully typeset. Rear leaf page 4 indicates "First publication of CARL SANDBURG'S most recent poem" and "Some time ago we asked Mr. Sandburg for permission to print this poem as a keepsake for his seventy-fifth birthday party." Thus this booklet represents the true first appearance of this well-known poem which begins: "There is only one horse on the earth / and his name is All Horses. / There is only one bird in the air / and his name is All Wings. / There is only one fish in the sea / and his name is All fins." Though no publisher is cited on this bibliographically-challenged printed piece the publisher was perhaps Broadcast Music Inc. of New York -- whose president and founder Carl Haverlin was an old friend of Sandburg's and was instrumental in organizing the celebrations honoring his friend's 75th. Sandburg at that time was at the height of his fame and these fetes garnished much press coverage. It's not known how many of these booklets were produced but likely a modest number for private distribution to friends and colleagues. A superb letter and scarce printed keepsake. unknown‎
