‎Zustand: roter Leineneinband, Farbkopfschnitt, gebräunter Schutzumschlag mit hinterlegten Randläsionen/kleinen Fehlstellen vor allem am oberen Kapital, Papier kaum gebräunt --- Inhalt: In seinem 1913 veröffentlichten autobiographischen Roman John Barleycorn (deutscher Titel König Alkohol, wörtlich John Gerstenkorn, womit London auf einen wichtigen Rohstoff für Schnaps und Bier verweist) thematisierte er seine Alkoholkrankheit. Er behauptete in diesem Buch, Zeit seines Lebens zwar große Mengen Alkohol getrunken zu haben, jedoch ohne jeden Genuss. Wie glaubwürdig diese Aussage ist, ist umstritten. Die Hauptthese des Buches ist, dass Alkohol ein Dämon ist, der qua Konvention Männern erlaubt, gesellig zu sein, sie letztlich aber in die Sucht führt und vernichtet. Von den Frauen hingegen erhoffte sich London mittels des Frauenwahlrechts ein Verbot des Alkohols und neue Formen der suchtfreien Geselligkeit. Es war ihm aber nicht klar, wie dies konkret aussehen könnte, was umso mehr auffällt, da sich London über Formen weiblicher Geselligkeit in dem Buch sehr abfällig äußert. London jedenfalls war seit dieser Zeit und bis zu seinem Lebensende ein Befürworter der Prohibition, die landesweit in den USA erst nach seinem Tod politisch verwirklicht wurde.[wikipedia] ROS8-6‎
