‎Biographie de la fille de Lord Byron, Medora Leigh. — « Elizabeth Medora Leigh-Byron, dont la tombe se trouve dans le cimetière de Lapeyre, vit le jour le 15 avril 1814. Elle était la troisième fille d’Augusta Leigh, et bien que portant officiellement le nom du mari de sa mère (le Colonel George Leigh), nul n’ignorait qu’elle était le fruit de la relation incestueuse d’Augusta et son demi frère... Et Lord Byron lui-même ne s’en cachait pas... Le second prénom de l’enfant : « Medora » était celui de l’héroïne du poème de Byron : « Le Corsaire », poème écrit durant les trois semaines de janvier 1814, pendant lesquelles Byron et Augusta (enceinte) furent bloqués par la neige à Newstead Abbey... Ainsi que nous l’avons dit plus haut, Byron fut contrait à l’exil, d’une part en raison de sa rupture avec son épouse Annabella Milbanke, mais surtout en raison des rumeurs concernant sa relation avec Augusta. Enfant du scandale, Medora connaîtra un destin romanesque, hanté sans doute par la figure d’un père à la fois maudit et héroïque... Adolescente, Medora eut une liaison avec Henry Trevanion, époux de sa sœur aînée Georgiana. Découvrant que Medora était enceinte, elle n’avait alors que 15 ans, le colonel Leigh la plaça dans un établissement près de Londres où « les jeunes filles de bonnes familles mettaient au monde leurs enfants non souhaités »... A Meda Vale, Medora était « prisonnière, derrière des barreaux et des portes verrouillées »... Henry « s’occupa de son évasion » et le couple s’enfuit en France où Medora mit au monde un enfant mort-né. L’affaire aurait pu s’arrêter là... mais Henry était très amoureux, et souhaitait à toute force un enfant de Medora... Le couple partit pour la Bretagne où ils s’installèrent « dans un vieux château en ruines près de Morlaix »… Ils vécurent là, sans notion d’argent, réduits à la pauvreté... Ils auraient utilisé durant leur exil le surnom d’Aubin, prétendant même être frère et sœur. »‎

‎1888. unbound. very good. 1 page 9.5 x 7.5 inches London June 18 1888 confirming his appointment at Wm. Wards studio in part: "Yes! - I shall be not only very happy but very proud to sit to Mr. Ward for my portrait for you & take it as an immense compliment into the bargain. Mr. Ward & myself will be able to arrange about the sittings - when the time arrives - without much difficulty. Forgive me for not writing sooner." This letter was addressed to Sir Henry Lucy a patron of the arts who mounted the letter in a scrap book and added a postscript in the left margin: "The portrait was painted and hung for years in our dining room." Gently faded at the edges with light spotting in the margins; still in very good condition overall. English illustrator and political cartoonist who was prominent in the second half of the 19th century. He was the illustrator for "Alice in Wonderland" and is best remembered as the principle political cartoonist for "Punch" magazine for over 50 years. unknown‎

Bibliophile et passionné de voyages, il composa son premier ouvrage en latin et traduisit de nombreux récits de voyage de l'espagnol et de l'anglais. Ternaux-Compans était le fils d'Étienne Nicolas Louis Ternaux, le frère de l'historien Mortimer Ternaux, le neveu de l'industriel Guillaume Louis Ternaux, le père de Maurice Ternaux-Compans et le gendre du général Jean Dominique Compans.‎

‎New York: Circa January 1 1950. 1950. Fine. - Original pen & ink drawing on a 2-3/8 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide cream-colored card signed "hilda terry". Together with a printed Hilda Terry New Year's greeting card and the mailing envelope. The signed card is in fine condition. <p>The mailing envelope is addressed to James A. Bowman a teacher who collected autographed items for his class. The original drawing penned on the left side of the card depicts the head of Terry's comic strip character "Teena" with a big bow in her hair and a spotted bow tie at her collar. The drawing is signed at the right: "Best wishes / hilda terry". The printed three-panel greeting card wishing recipients "A Merry 1950!" depicts a demure angel in a lace collar on the cover with the legend "Seasons' Greetings from hilda terry" and two cavorting angels wrapped in voluminous robes on the inside panels.</p><p>Hilda Terry 1914-2006 originally wanted to be a sports cartoonist and spent time sketching at sporting events. She changed her plan when she entered a sports cartoon and a comic cartoon in a contest and won with the latter. While working as a waitress in New York City in the 1930s she studied at the Art Students League. One of her teachers was Gregory d'Alessio whom she married in 1938. She was signed by King Features Syndicate to create a feature comic strip "It's a Girl's Life" which soon became "Teena" and ran from 1941 to 1964. In 1950 Terry was the first woman to be admitted to the previously all-male National Cartoonists Society. She later became an award-winning animator and a pioneer in early computer animation.</p> New York: Circa January 1, 1950.‎

E. Tersen s'est efforcé d'atteindre la vie réelle de Joseph Garibaldi qui n'est plus à travers cet ouvrage un personnage de légende mais « un homme véritable », celui qui, tout au long de sa vie mouvementée, n'abandonna jamais le but qu'il s'était fixé : l'unité de l'Italie, jamais ne capitula et dont le rôle fut souvent déterminant dans la marche en avant de l'épopée qu'il mena jusqu'à la complète victoire. Patriote avant tout, homme slmple et loyal, sans ambition pour lui-même et sans vanité, Garibaldi s'effaca toujours lorsqu'il le jugea nécessaire à l'intérêt de sa patrie et n'accepta une récompense largement méritée que contraint par une pauvreté sans issue. « Homme véritable », Garibaldi le fut aussi car il connut la tendresse humaine envers les siens, femme et enfants. Tersen, présenté avec un souci de la qualité typographique et de l'illustration qui manquent trop souvent dans les ouvrages d'histoire, constitue en fait une histoire de toute la Seconde République, puisqu'il commence avec la crise économique et politique de la Monarchie de Juillet pour se terminer au coup d'État du Deux-Décembre. L'auteur apporte une attention particulière aux aspects sociaux des conflits qui se manifestèrent alors et aux tentatives soit parlementaires, soit insurrectionnelles, pour essayer de résoudre une crise particulièrement dure. L'illustration, choisie avec un souci remarquable, constitue, avec des lithographies, des dessins et des sculptures, une véritable galerie de l'art du temps. Un plan de Paris, avec deux cartons localisant plus précisément la zone de la fusillade du boulevard des Capucines, et celle du Palais-Royal et des Tuileries, ajoute des précisions peu connues à l'histoire parisienne de 1848.
