Thurber Donald MD. 1918 1998 M. D.
Recollections of John F. Kennedy A collection of extemporaenous remarks delivered at the Prismatic Club of Detroit in April 1995
Grosse Pointe Farms MI: Charles Kelly Foundation. Near Fine. 1997. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Autograph; 63 & 1 pages; One of the scarcer modern books about the youth of John F. Kennedy 35th President of the United States. This copy is press-numbered #241 of 350 copies on the limitation page. Willard Wirtz Kennedy's Secretary of Labor. There is a t.l.s. inserted in this copy from Charles Kelly to Wirtz. The book itself is scarce rather than rare but this copy -- inscribed to the last surviving cabinet member of JFK's New Frontier -- Willard Wirtz Kennedy's Secretary of Labor -- is special. There is a t.l.s. inserted in this copy from Charles Kelly to Wirtz. The author was a fellow member of the Harvard Class of 1940. Donald Thurber and John Kennedy entered Harvard in the fall of 1936; both lived in Weld Hall both were Government majors. Kennedy ran and lost for class president; Donald Thurber was elected treasurer of their class. Kennedy's path following graduation in 1940 is well documented. Donald Thurber is not so well known. He became a political consultant and fund raiser; served for many years as a Regent of the University of Michigan; was executive assistant to U.S. Sen. Blair Moody D-Mich.; and as a consultant to Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall and to the director of the National Park Service; adviser to Secretary of Commerce Elliot Richardson. Recalling their student years Thurber is most interesting in recording an event which he and Kennedy attended together: a Harvard gathering at which four distinguished European anti-fascists spoke including Dr. Heinrich Bruning who had been elected German Chancellor during the Weimar Republic. The author and John Kennedy walked together back to their residence discussing what they had just heard. Thurber pinpoints this night as the moment when the young John F. Kennedy moved from the isolationist point of view which he had previously shared with his father then serving as U. S. Ambassador to England. In all fairness Joseph Kennedy Sr. probably overshot the category of "isolationist" and arrived in the camp of those who thought a Nazi victory in Europe unavoidable. Thurber delineates the steps along which the Ambassador's son diverged from his father's path -- first resigning from his position on the 'Crimson' in the pages of which Kennedy had previously published isolationist editorials and concluding with the commercial publication of his remarkable senior thesis: "Why England Slept." While the family money and position probably made that book possible its thrust must have made the Ambassador uneasy. The two Harvard men stayed in touch after the war. A fine a.l.s. from JFK written to Thurber in 1945 trying to stir up action on the publication of the first of the reports of their class of 1940 appeared at auction a few years ago at PBA. There was an important later phase of the relationship between the two classmates. During the campagn to become the nominee of the Democratic party the author played a delicate role of intermediary in behind-the-scenes negotiations between Kennedy and then-Governor of Michigan G. Mennen Williams who had appointed Thurber as one of the Regents of the University of Michigan in 1958. Governor Williams also sought the Democratic party's nomination and had the firm committment of support from the large Michigan delegation. Kennedy unlike Gov. Williams was gaining momentum nationwide but it was not clear that he would arrive at the Los Angeles convention with sufficient support to win the nomination. Thurber shared with Kennedy his impression that the Senator was a strong second choice among the Michigan delegates and managed to pursuade Kennedy and his campagn advisors to avoid angering the Governor by making an pre-convention effort to pry away Michigan delegates formally pledged to their Governor. The author got both sides to agree to a private meeting between Senator Kennedy and Gov. Williams at the latter's Mackinac Island house just before the Los Angeles convention. Thurber pulled off his delicate tightrope walk; Kennedy did interrupt his frantic pre-Convention schedule to visit Gov. William's summer house and the subsequent release of the Michigan delegation proved essential to the first round victory of Kennedy to win his party's nomination. Years later Donald Thurber spoke to a gathering of the Prismatic club a long-established literary organization in Detroit. Thurber's talk was transcribed and made into a book published by the then-president of the Prismatic -- Charles A. Kelly a retired industrialist known for his research into the text history of Shakespeare's Hamlet etc. This copy has an intriguing direct connection to Kennedy's New Frontier having been inscribed by the publisher to the last-surviving member of Kennedy's Presidential cabinet: Willard Wirtz Kennedy's Secretary of Labor. There is a t.l.s. inserted in this copy from Charles Kelly to Wirtz. In the sort of small world frequently encountered among members of the Harvard community Willard Wirtz would have been well known to both John F. Kennedy when the two men were underclassmen. Wirtz graduated with distinction from Harvard Law in 1937 and was in the influential position of Secretary-Treasurer to the Harvard Law Review. Kelly's letter of presentation of this copy invites Wirtz's reaction to Thurber's view of the future President's personality and nature -- "the JFK you worked closely with during his Presidency". There is a brief pen note on Kelly's t.l.s. inserted in this copy "Answered 3/18/04". As a postscript W. Willard Wirtz died in Washington D.C. on April 24 2010 six weeks after his 98th birthday. At the time of his death he was the oldest living former Presidential cabinet member and thus the last surviving member of the Kennedy administration cabinet. In his remarks permanently recorded in this elegant little book Donald Thurber mentions that Kennedy graduated "cum laude" -- despite his many student activities and social demands on his time. Modestly he fails to add that his own Harvard degree was awarded "magna cum laude." He also fails to mention the significant last request his old friend made of him. When Thurber's term as a Michigan Regent was up in 1963 President John F. Kennedy personally asked Thurber to study a more effective means of attracting private-sector support for conservation. Thurber formed the National Park Trust Fund and the National Park Foundation both of which became congressionally chartered partners of the National Park Service. ; Signed by Author .
