‎Dans ce quatrième volume, le classique qu'est déjà L'Histoire de la IVe République traite, sous un jour et avec un matériau nouveaux, deux problèmes qui dépassent de beaucoup la France et concernent directement l'état du monde au cours de ce dernier demi-siècle. Le Malentendu de l'histoire, c'est l'affaire de Suez, l'expédition militaire franco-britannico-israélienne déclenchée en 1956 contre Nasser après qu'il eut nationalisé le Canal de Suez. Cette affaire, démontée comme elle ne l'avait jamais été, explique en partie la force de l'Etat d'Israël, à qui elle a permis d'accéder à la capacité nucléaire, et la prédominance américaine dans cette partie du monde. La guerre du Golfe a été un aboutissement logique de ce conflit. La Passion, c'est le drame de la France et de l'Algérie, de l'Algérie et de la France. Parce que l'auteur a perçu que la compréhension de la guerre d'Algérie exigeait un retour en arrière très en-deçà des dérives de la décolonisation au milieu du XXe siècle, l'historique des relations de la France et de l'Algérie de 1515 à 1956 donne un éclairage neuf et saisissant à ce drame, ce qui semblait une gageure après les milliers d'ouvrages qui lui ont déjà été consacrés. Paradoxalement, il permet de comprendre aussi la violence actuelle qui déchire ce pays, trente-cinq ans après son accession à l'indépendance, et qui risque encore d'atteindre indirectement, voire de plein fouet, l'ex-puissance colonisatrice. Grâce à des archives françaises et étrangères jamais encore consultées, "Malentendu et passion" fourmille d'informations inédites, parfois stupéfiantes. L'ampleur exceptionnelle de la documentation a obligé à couper "La République des Tourmentes", dont "Malentendu et passion" constitue le deuxième tome, en trois volumes.‎

‎Ce premier volume de cette monumentale histoire de la IVe République commence lorsque, dans ce pays ruiné, exsangue, mais animé d'une rare vitalité qu'est la France de 1945, deux forces s'affrontent, le général de Gaulle et le parti communiste. C'est autour d'eux que la vie du pays se détermine. Nul n'aurait alors imaginé qu'en moins de deux années de Gaulle aurait quitté le pouvoir et que les communistes auraient été éliminés du gouvernement. Sur ces événements, comme sur tous ceux qui marquent ces années souvent dramatiques, La République des Illusions fait le point et apporte des éclairages inattendus. C'est une invraisemblable époque où les drames, les intrigues se succèdent. Des scandales politico-policiers éclaboussent les dignitaires du régime: l'affaire des vins met en cause un chef d'Etat, l'affaire des généraux incrimine le chef d'état-major général des armées. La France vit à l'heure de la cassure du monde en deux blocs. C'est le temps du rideau de fer entre Moscou et Washington, de la guerre froide qui menace de dégénérer en troisième conflit mondial.
