HAY J.C.D.
Lines from my Log-Books.
8vo., First Edition, with a fine portrait frontispiece in photogravure (original tissue guard present), engraved title-vignette, 8 splendid sepia-toned lithographed plates of naval engagements, a full-page plan of rigging and a double-page map in blue and black; strongly rebound in mid-twentieth century navy blue buckram, gilt back, uncut, a bright, clean copy. Admiral Sir John Dalrymple Hay (1821-1912) served in no fewer than twenty-three ships of the Royal Navy, from Thalia in 1834 to Indus in 1859, during which period he visited South America, the Pacific, the Near and Middle East, India, China, North America and the West Indies among other regions. He entered parliament in Palmerston's last government and was appointed to the Board of Admiralty in 1866. Following his retirement from the navy he continued active is a wide range of official and administrative roles. Curiously, this detailed and very readable autobiography remains the only substantial account of his career. Appendices include a genealogy, transcriptions of various maritime-related bills and papers, and his famous letter promoting the necessity for corporal punishment during wartime. NMM Catalogue II/1, 652.

Hayworth, Rita (1918 – 1987) ; Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan (June 1911 – May 1960); "modern screen" photographer
Unpublished photographs of the wedding of Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan and Rita Hayworth from the archives of "modern screen" magazine.
Vallauris France: May 1949. Six silver prints 24 x 18.2 cm. from the archives of "modern screen the friendly magazine." Also an 18 x 13 cm. enlargement of the couple from one of the photos. The August 1949 issue had a feature on the wedding by Louella Parsons on pp. 6-7 with 6 other photographs in a small format. Verso with the wetstamp "Copyright Coordination 5 Boulevard Poissonnière Paris "which appears on all the original photographs used in modern screen by the French distributor. . .Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan June 1911 – May 1960 was a son of Sultan Mahommed Shah Aga Khan III the leader of the NizÄrÄ« Ismaili Muslims a sect of Shia Islam and the father of Aga Khan IV. In May 1949 after a divorce from his first wife Joan Yarde-Buller Ali Khan married the American film star Rita Hayworth 1918 – 1987 in Cannes France to make her his next wife. When she got married to Ali Rita left a very good film career in Hollywood CA.They were married for a short time; it was for approximately four years. They got divorced in 1953. During his marriage to Rita Hayworth Ali Khan began to have personal relationships with popular lady celebrities. They included actress Gene Tierney and fashion model Simone Micheline Bodin Bettina Graziani.Rita Hayworth after the collapse of her marriage to Khan returned to Hollywood. She starred in several "comeback" pictures "Affair in Trinidad" 1952 "Salome" 1953 and "Miss Sadie Thompson" 1953. It was reported in the news that Hayworth seemed "rather frightened at the approach of returning to making motion pictures". She clashed with studio executives and was placed on suspension while filming. Nevertheless her pictures were highly publicized. They ended up being blockbusters and grossing millions of dollars. She continued to star in a string of successful pictures until she stopped in 1972 with "The Wrath of God".She lived a total of 68 years and died from Alzheimer's in Manhattan NY. HEATHCOTE T.A.
The British Admirals of the Fleet 1734-1995. A Biographical Dictionary. With a Foreword by Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, Chief of the Defence Staff.
8vo., First Edition, with 18 plates on 8; cloth, gilt back, a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Good, thoughtful (and often entertaining) extended summaries of the 115 officers appointed to the Royal Navy's highest rank in the three hundred-odd years of its existence. Undeniably useful and certainly handy, it would benefit from more and better pictures (particularly of the lesser-known individuals). A similar treatment of British admirals is a greater need.
