Provenance: Frederick du Cane Godman bookplate A beautiful copy of this rare work beautifully illustrated with large scale images of the exuberant flora of the Cape of Good Hope. According to the subscriber's list only 111 copies of this work were produced. The genesis of the work is described in the Preface: "The original drawings . were made from specimens collected at the Cape of Good Hope in 1843 and 1844 . during a temporary residence in that Colony . During their progress they happened to come under the observation and critical eye of Dr. Nathaniel Wallich then also on a visit to the Cape and under the encouragement derived from his approbation and with his sanction of their fidelity the drawings were sent to England and having been submitted to the inspection of Sir William Hooker were likewise honoured by his favourable opinion and it was at the joint suggestion and advice of these two distinguished botanists that they were ultimately placed in the hands of the eminent Lithographer Mr. P. Gauci. The very interesting descriptive remarks upon the plates were contributed by Professor Harvey of Dublin whose intimate knowledge of South African botany has enabled him to confer a value upon the work in which it would have otherwise have been deficient." The identity of the artist was initially kept secret but clues were given: the final tailpiece is an image of the only non-South African plant to be included the "Roupellia grata" which according to Harvey "forms an appropriate conclusion to this work . because of the generic name it bears." The secret did not remain a secret for long: Wallich and Hooker disclosed in print the identity of the artist in September 1849 and later in April 1850. Arabella Roupell née Piggott was the wife of Thomas Boone Roupell of the East India Company. She based her drawings on specimens collected at the Cape of Good Hope in 1843 and 1844. Dr. Nathaniel Wallich 1786-1854 reviewed them and sent them to his colleague Sir William Hooker 1785-1865 in London for further critique. Wallich and Hooker suggested that Roupell publish them and recommended P. Gauci as the lithographer. Professor William Henry Harvey 1811-1866 provided the descriptive text. The final image in the work Roupellia grata was named in honour of various members of the Roupell family including Arabella Roupell and her husband his grandfather Charles Roupell of Charleston and Dr. Roupell of London by Wallich and Hooker. A vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph 333 � 451 mm flush-cut on the original thick card mount. The label of the Fine Art Society New Bond Street London is on the verso of this print with the title as above and the London catalogue reference number 88 in pencil; the latter is crossed out and replaced with the Australian catalogue reference number 86. The photograph has recently been hinge-mounted and matted using archival materials ready for framing visible image size 320 � 440 mm; in excellent condition. This print comes from the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs; this was a slightly enlarged version of the London exhibition held earlier in the same year. The full title of the Australian exhibition catalogue is 'Exhibition of Unique Photographic Pictures taken during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Also other Photographic Studies by Frank Hurley' small octavo 16 pages plus 8 full-page plates and the title-wrappers; printed in Adelaide by G. Hassell & Son. A small advertisement appeared in the Adelaide 'Advertiser' on Saturday 25 September 1915 announcing a 'South Polar Exhibit. until October 6. This Exhibition is your only opportunity of viewing Historical Relics of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition and Frank Hurley's Unexcelled Photographic Reproductions'. The images were sourced primarily from Mawson's 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition but there were also several sections of non-polar images as well under the headings 'Northern Territory Australia' 'Java' and 'Miscellaneous'. This photograph was taken at Cape Hunter 'a rocky promontory on the west shore of Commonwealth Bay Antarctica . 15 km west of Cape Denison. It was discovered in 1912 and explored the following year by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson who named it for John G. Hunter chief biologist of the expedition' Geographic Names Information System United States Geological Survey retrieved online. Taylor: a significant photographic record of Chicago in the late 19th century. A major photographic record of the city of Chicago and its architecture in the late 19th century almost entirely the work of the significant photographer John W. Taylor with his imprint in the negative. Taylor was a bookseller and stationer before advertising himself as a commercial photographer in the late 1880s. He concentrated his work on Chicago-area architecture and city infrastructure. Today he is recognized as a pioneering photographer of architecture working in Chicago at the very beginning of the skyscraper era. This superb photograph album presents a fairly comprehensive view of Chicago's architecture and life during one of the city's most interesting and vibrant periods from the highest of the skyscrapers to the interiors of pig pens in the stockyards with numerous residences parks lush interiors the 1893 World's Fair and more in-between. Taylor's importance as one of the earliest significant architectural photographers is addressed in Peter Bacon Hales' Silver Cities: Photographing American Urbanization 1839-1939: "Photographers of the older generation managed to retain their identities even as they adjusted to their more prosaic role as visual adjuncts to the architects who designed the buildings they photographed. J.W. Taylor of Chicago for example made an extensive survey of the "modern" buildings of Chicago and its environs many of which traveled throughout the globe as architects and engineers converged on the city in the later 1800s and beyond to see the miracle of the Chicago style of building. Taylor's pictures went as far as Melbourne Australia in the collection of Australian architect E.G. Kilburn who made his pilgrimage to the architects' mecca in 1889. Kilburn stared sketched and took notes; then he brought back photographs by Taylor of everything from the Pullman company town to the Palmer House." Chicago has been an especially important architectural center since the period represented in this collection. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed most of the buildings in the downtown area a special class of architects and engineers flocked to the city resulting in an architectural boom unequaled in the history of 19th century urban development. Hallowed names such as Louis Sullivan Dankmar Adler John M. Van Osdel Daniel Burnham William W. Boyington William LeBaron Jenney John Wellborn Root William Holabird Martin Roche Edward Baumann Harris W. Huel Solon Spencer Beman and Clinton J. Warren stamped their unique architectural character on the Chicago landscape. Each of these architects is amply represented in the photographs contained herein. There is even one photograph of the magnificent lobby of the Rookery Building considered the grandest lobby in Chicago at the time. This view is especially interesting to architectural historians because this interior was remodeled a short time later in 1905 by Adler & Sullivan's former head draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright. The late 19th century was also a transitional time in building construction when architects were beginning to leave behind cast iron frames and experiment with steel-frame construction and large areas of plate glass especially in the "Commercial Style" made famous by Sullivan and others in the Chicago School. As a result some of the earliest modern skyscrapers are found in Chicago. A general summary of the photographs in the album is as follows: forty-two buildings including the Masonic Temple the tallest skyscraper in the world at the time the Woman's Temple the Rookery Building the Chamber of Commerce the Monadnock Building the Northern Hotel the Home Insurance Building the Tacoma Building the Caxton Building the Pullman Building the Oakland Hotel the Grand Pacific Hotel Palmer House the Auditorium Building Marshall Field's the Lester Building the Hotel Metropole Libby Prison the New Regiment Armory depots and churches; seven downtown street scenes; seventeen residential streets including Lake Shore Dr. and Michigan Ave. and residences of prominent citizens including Potter Palmer and Lambert Tree; twenty parks pavilions and recreation scenes; three of Grant Monument and its unveiling; ten Lincoln Park scenes some with animals; three of Garfield Park; ten featuring World's Fair building construction; nine views of the October 1892 World's Fair dedication showing ceremonies and a large parade; two scenes of boating; twelve views of stockyards and meat processing six exterior and interior views of an auditorium; eight interiors including Palmer House and a bank; and three scenes of horse racing at Washington Park. Taylor's photographs reside in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago fifty-six images and the Chicago History Museum 150 images. The subject matter of those collections and the present work overlap significantly testament to the prodigious nature of Taylor's output.
