Signed dated and numbered "#02" Alexander Sarantos Tremulis 1914-1991 was the designer of the production version of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo and was America's most original design theorist of the post-war era. He was born in Chicago and without any training in drawing or engineering joined the design team of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg in 1933. He was chief stylist when the company failed in 1937. He worked for GM Chrysler and Custom Motors in Beverly Hills which designed unique cars for movie stars. During World War II he worked for the Air Force designing aircraft and in the process drew what may have been the first visualizations of extra-terrestrial transport: flying saucers. After the war Tremulis worked with Preston Tucker and later for Ford. He formed his own consulting firm in the 1960's. This quite beautiful design and other similar ones were made for the ill-fated Bricklin car company which existed from 1974 to 1976 and whose demise had nothing to do with Tremulis's designs. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1982. unknown‎

"In the summer of 1947 on board ship returning from Copenhagen to New York I had been pacing the deck reflecting on Powell's discovery of the muon and speculating about the possibility that just as the muon appeared to be a heavy brother of the electron there might well exist heavy partners of the proton and neutron - which had not yet been seen at that time. Now here was the ! That particle I was immediately convinced had to be related to the proton-neutron very much like the muon to the electron. These visions were a consequence of my work done in 1946-47 in Copenhagen in which each 'prewar particle' appeared as the lowest mass particle of a 'particle family'. . . I had been the co-creator of the word 'lepton' to denote a member of the electron-neutrino family. In 1953 I proposed to baptize the proton-neutron and its heavier brothers the was only the first of these to be discovered. . . with the collective name 'baryon' from the Greek ßa - heavy.
