A large manuscript sketchleaf of eleven measures written by the admired conductor and son of the violinist Jan Kubelik who was also an accomplished composer. <br><br />A substantial sketchleaf of an unidentified instrumental work evidenly from a working manuscript the music is written in pencil on two systems of five staves. The voices are incomplete and there is evidence of annotations and corrections throughout. On the verso he has composed two systems of two staves with further brief incomplete sketches beneath which Kubelik has signed in bold black ink. One large horizontal crease and some creasing and wear around the edges left edge rough; otherwise very good condition. 24.2 x 31.7 cm. unknown

Impressive collection of AMQS and inscriptions addressed to the celebrated soprano Delphine Ugalde on both sides of a large album leaf measuring 31.5 x 23.5 cm 12.5 x 9.5 inches. Fine. <br><br />The recto with: eight measures written and signed by the French composer Charles Lecocq from his wildly successful "La fille de Madame Angot" which when premiered in Paris in 1873 was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively. Inscribed to Ugalde and dated 20 May 1873; an unidentified inscription; a heartfelt inscription from Rossini's friend and biographer Alexis Azevedo dated 17 July 1870. <br><br />The verso with: a three-measure 1869 quotation by Fauré celebrated French baritone and composer creator of important roles by Massé Thomas Meyerbeer Verdi and others who has penned a selection from his own Sacred Song for Voice and Piano "Les Rameaux" with a trimmed albumen photograph of him affixed beneath; a heartfelt 1869 inscription by Capoul the great French tenor creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie who writes that he is "so happy of your return to us that I embrace you as strongly as I admire you"; an 1870 inscription from Dejazet important French actress who writes that her "voice remains always charming even when it is speaking it is your great heart which sings" and with a trimmed albumen photograph of her affixed beneath; with one additional unidentifed inscription lower left dated 1873. <br><br />Ugalde "studied in Paris with Cinti-Damoreau and made her début in 1848 at the Opéra-Comique as Angèle in Auber's Le domino noir a role created by her teacher. In 1851 she sang at Her Majesty's Theatre London as Delilah in Auber's L'enfant prodigue. In 1858 she sang Leonora Il trovatore at the Paris Opéra and was then engaged at the Théâtre Lyrique. September 21 1905. 1905. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink filling both sides of a sheet of cream- colored 6-1/4 inch high by 4- 1/2 inch wide paper. Signed "Argyll". There is some very minor soiling to the letter with a small area of light creasing to the top edge. There is an ink blot to one word on the first side. Folded once for mailing. Very good. <p>Argyll writes about his wife's health: "I am sorry to say that my wife is in a state of health which the Doctors say will become serious unless she stops exhausting functions. Winter journeying must be avoided as far as possible so that more expeditions like that to Leeds are prohibited."<p>John Campbell 9th Duke of Argyll 1845-1914 usually better known by the courtesy title Marquess of Lorne was the fourth Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. In 1871 he married Princess Louise the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria the first time since 1515 that a daughter of the sovereign had married a subject of the crown. When his Canadian appointment was announced there was great excitement throughout Canada at the idea of having a royal resident in Rideau Hall though the press disapproved. Lord Lorne was intensely interested in Canada and Canadians and he and his wife made many lasting contributions to Canadian society especially to the arts and sciences. A number of Canadian places were named in honor of Lorne and his wife. September 21, 1905. unknown

Good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling both sides of a sheet of black- bordered letterhead approximately 7 inches high by 4-3/8 widr with the address of his family seat printed in raised lettering at the top. Signed "Brassey". There is a small light stain below the salutation with a glue mark down the right margin of the verso where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Good. <p>Brassey writes to thank the Rev. J. R. Boyer for sending him the children's book "Davie Blake the Sailor": "It is as you say a work very much to the sailor's taste and is calculated to do much good by drawing attention to those vices and follies which we all deplore."<p>Thomas Brassey 1st Earl of Brassey 1836- 1918 was a British Llberal Party politician Governor of Victoria Australia and enthusiastic yachtsman. His first experience of sailing was while he was still in school at Rugby. He owned a succession of yachts and between July 1876 and May 1877 circumnavigated the world in his steam- assisted three-masted topsail-yard schooner Sunbeam. From 1869 to 1902 he was rector of All Souls' Protestant Episcopal Church in New York City.
