br. È una querula bibliotecaria di provincia la donna che parla dalla prima all'ultima riga di questo incantevole monologo. Il suo interlocutore è un ragazzo che usa il seminterrato della biblioteca come bivacco notturno. A lui la custode si rivolge mischiando vita privata, libri, invettive. E la confessione di un tenero rapimento verso uno studente di cui però contempla solo la nuca. La sua voce ci arriva sommessa, un po' nevrotica, la voce di una donna ferita da un amore andato male, chiusa in un riserbo che solo i suoi amati romanzi riescono a scheggiare. "Madri e camionisti", cinque racconti, cinque donne, cinque voci soliste che formano un coro di solitudini, di sofferenze inconfessabili, di segreti, frustrazioni, paure. Tre di loro sono slovacche e vivono a Bratislava, due sono italiane e vivono a Torino, ma quello in cui si muovono è un territorio comune, un universale che le lega e in cui sembrano a volte incrociarsi senza entrare in contatto. Nessuno vede la loro anima logorata, sono avvolte da una parvenza di normalità e di grigiore quotidiano, tra famiglia, rapporto con la madre, lavoro, disturbi mentali e un mondo maschile anonimo, spesso inerte ma a volte anche pericoloso.
