La sua ricerca d'identità diventa allora un cammino sia verso se stesso, sia verso chi lo ha amato, un percorso che lo conduce fino all'Istante largo, soggetto di un quadro della nonna, ma soprattutto epifania di un momento che apre le porte della consapevolezza: la famiglia non è necessariamente una struttura costruita a priori, ma può assumere le forme più diverse, spuntare in situazioni in cui i legami di sangue non ricoprono alcun ruolo, diventare uno spazio immenso per chi ama. Con una scrittura limpida e poetica, Sara Fruner ci offre una riflessione insieme intensa e lieve sull'imprevedibilità dei legami che ci forgiano. E se gli amori sono rimasti incompiuti, se sono terminati troppo presto, ogni legame spezzato del nostro passato può avere una seconda, inattesa chance, che ci sorprende.

Mi sedetti accanto a lui con il computer sulle ginocchia e aspettai. Non sapevo cosa avesse in mente, pensavo a una lettera o a un breve articolo di costume, ma quando cominciò mi resi subito conto che si trattava di ben altro. Le parole gli uscivano rapide, una dietro l'altra, senza pause, senza incertezze. E via via prendeva forma una ballata lunga una vita, la sua vita. Non si interruppe mai, se non per accendersi una sigaretta, non mi chiese mai di rileggere il testo e così, di getto, nacque "La linea di minor resistenza". Quando smise mi guardò e mi chiese «Allora, che te ne pare?» Ero stordita, la forza delle parole mi aveva completamente avvolta, a tratti anche turbata fino a commuovermi. Quei versi delineavano con limpida e struggente chiarezza il confuso percorso di noi tutti, ignari guerrieri sul sentiero della vita, pronti a combattere il nemico strenuamente per poi lasciarci andare sfiniti ma appagati, sulle sponde di un pacifico ruscello, riprendendo infine il cammino verso una meta ignota ma inesorabile. «Papà, è bellissimo! Un piccolo capolavoro!» risposi quasi sotto voce. Lui mi sorrise indulgente e mi disse: «Ora non esageriamo... L'avevo in testa da vent'anni, ma non ero mai riuscito a scriverlo. Forse perché non era ancora il momento. Però mi devi promettere una cosa: lo farai pubblicare solo dopo la mia morte». E io ho mantenuto la promessa." (Maria Carla Fruttero)

Ispirandosi ai racconti dei sopravvissuti ai khmer rossi, Idling compone un romanzo teso e vibrante, che riporta in vita una Cambogia perduta, tra calde notti d'estate e raffinati vestiti di seta, caffè fumosi e sfarzose "soirées dansantes" nei palazzi reali, dipingendo l'affresco inedito dell'attimo in cui la storia avrebbe potuto prendere un altro corso, quando la vicenda intima di tre vite ha inciso sul destino di un popolo e di un paese.
