Nonostante la prima reazione, di rifiuto tassativo, Goldfarb si ritrova a frugare nelle pieghe di un passato che a lungo ha messo da parte, soffocandolo attraverso una quotidianità che si rivelerà assai fragile. Tornano a galla i ricordi, e con essi i protagonisti di una storia che, pur essendosi svolta in Germania, non è quella di un "normale tedesco". Sebbene Goldfarb non abbia direttamente avuto a che fare con l'Olocausto, le sue tragiche conseguenze ne hanno segnato la crescita e la vita adulta, portandolo a vivere un'esistenza di emarginato in casa propria.
