ill., br. Gambassi è un piccolo paese in Toscana, di cui pochi hanno sentito parlare. Eppure a Gambassi è nato il cane Blasco, e a Gambassi ha trovato rifugio e salvezza la famiglia materna dell'autrice, in fuga dalle persecuzioni nazifasciste. Quando Marina Morpurgo mette per caso a fuoco questa strana coincidenza, comincia un bizzarro viaggio nella memoria che la porta a vedere con altri occhi la malattia che nel frattempo si è impossessata del suo cane e la fuga verso la Toscana dei suoi nonni e di sua madre. Qualcuno ha aiutato la sua famiglia a sopravvivere e qualcuno l'ha aiutata a salvare Blasco, qualcuno si è mostrato solidale e qualcuno no, qualcuno le ha insegnato la speranza e allo stesso tempo l'elaborazione della perdita. La lotta che combatte per salvare Blasco viene seguita con partecipazione inattesa da amici e sconosciuti, e a anni di distanza Morpurgo rivisita amici e sconosciuti intervenuti per salvare quella piccola famiglia di ebrei. Potrebbe sembrare sacrilego questo continuo accostamento tra salvezza di un animale e salvezza di esseri umani, ma solo per coloro che non comprendono come l'amore - per un cane o per i nonni - possa scavare dentro l'animo dei solchi profondissimi che è giusto riconoscere e apprezzare. Il libro viene pubblicato nel 2016 e in questi anni all'autrice si sono presentate altre significative coincidenze, di cui ha voluto dar conto in questa nuova edizione. Romanzo memoir, "È solo un cane (dicono). La storia continua" parla della speranza, della salvezza, delle brave persone, della perdita, della capacità di lottare.

Tuttavia, essa si avvicina agli esempi di piena libertà e varietà di scrittura tipici degli autori cosiddetti "Scapigliati" e, in tempi più recenti, alla prestigiosa figura di Cesare Zavattini, scrittore esponente sia del neorealismo sia del surrealismo.

Gli scrittori hanno cominciato presto a fare i conti con la settima arte, raccontandone le meraviglie e le insidie, il lato sfavillante e il lato oscuro, come oscura e misteriosa è la sala cinematografica. E se è vero che oggi il cinema sembra avviarsi verso una fruizione solitaria simile a quella della lettura e viviamo nel tempo in cui la finzione dilaga nella realtà, potremo sempre interrogarci insieme a Domenico Starnone su chi abbia deciso di abolire la magia della parola FINE.
