È in lei, e nella natura dove sembra a volte confondersi, che il poeta vive i suoi momenti più alti di autentica felicità. Cos'è, in fondo, la felicità? Nulla di complicato. La felicità "è semplice", non si costruisce con strumenti complessi né con lavori manuali. Senza che abbia toccato nulla -confessa il poetacon le mie mani, ho costruito la felicità. E come ha fatto? ci chiediamo tutti: al poeta basta "catturare" gli occhi di lei, il suo sguardo sorridente, inesauribile seduzione "da mietere e piantare in ogni stagione." L'amore è qui vissuto in maniera totalizzante, è nel vivere questo rapporto d'amore con lei che trova senso la vita stessa del poeta. Che poi sia un amore reale, idealizzato, presente, passato, poco importa; il poeta rimane ambiguo ma non ambiguo è il suo concetto d'amore; pur accennandone varie volte non lo definisce. L'amore, ci permettiamo di dire, non conosce definizione se non in un abbraccio che rasenta l'infinito.

Un figlio da cui si è separata poco dopo la nascita, alla fine della guerra, lasciandolo crescere con un'altra donna, che credeva sua madre. La ragione, ignota, di quell'abbandono (volontario o obbligato?), spinge una nipote di Klara, dopo la morte di suo padre, a ricercare le tracce della possibile verità, e delle proprie origini. Alla ricerca della spiegazione di quel trauma originario e di chi sono "i tedeschi", ripercorriamo tutta la vita di Klara, immersa nel flusso spesso tragico della storia tedesca ed europea del '900. Assistiamo così all'incompleta ricostruzione di una "geografia della perdita", come recita il sottotitolo. Perdita strettamente legata con la maternità - è un romanzo di donne e di madri: buone, cattive, mancate e defraudate - e con la memoria, che svanisce, spesso senza rimedio, tra le cose non dette, e la cattiva coscienza.

This allowed her to work on her art in the mornings and spend time with her family in the evenings. On one hand Kollwitz expressed the desire to be free of her domestic ties in order to be able to focus more intensely on art. However she also appreciated feeling needed by her husband and two sons. br. Ci sono libri scritti da sognatori. Libri come "L'uomo senza passato" che, pagina dopo pagina, raccontano storie memorabili, illuminate di tenerezza e di humour. Dopo un'aggressione in cui ha perso la memoria, M. si ritrova a vivere nella povertà estrema della periferia di Helsinki. Solo e malandato, incontra solidarietà e accoglienza in una comunità di senzatetto che vivono nella baraccopoli di container vicino al porto. Trova forse l'occasione di una nuova vita, ma soprattutto incontra Irma, triste volontaria dell'Esercito della Salvezza, di cui si invaghisce. Tra loro nasce un tenero legame e tutto sembra andare bene, fino a quando viene casualmente coinvolto in una rapina. La sua foto finisce sui giornali, la sua identità viene accertata e fa quindi ritorno a casa dalla moglie. Capisce subito, però, che quel passato non gli appartiene più, solo il presente può offrirgli una vera opportunità di riscatto. Con la sua vena surreale, Kaurismäki dà vita a un'umanità ricca di dignità e di spirito quanto povera di beni materiali. Diseredati moderni, ironici e stravaganti, i personaggi di questo libro sembrano emergere da un altro tempo. E mentre parte un nostalgico tango finlandese, Kaurismäki sembra dire che dimenticare il passato può essere a volte l'inizio di una rinascita. br. Qual è l'origine dell'intima inquietudine di Momoko, la giovane figlia dell'architetto Mizuhara, che la porta a condurre una intensa, disordinata vita sentimentale? Una latente omosessualità, oppure il senso forte, ma desolante, di una condizione femminile votata inevitabilmente al martirio? L'orgoglio, la vanità di chi si scopre padrona del proprio estro amoroso e dell'altrui, o l'assenza del padre, troppo lontano per insegnare ad amare? Intorno all'ansia di una figura a tratti dura, frigida, ma vera e dolente, la penna lieve e acutissima di Kawabata intesse una partitura complessa nella quale la figura della protagonista non domina, ma si crea in un magistrale contrappunto narrativo con le altre figure del romanzo: il padre, tanto estraneo alla figlia quanto ambizioso di apprenderne i segreti moti del cuore; Takemiya, il giovanissimo amante, il cui carattere dolce e devoto esaspera e commuove la ragazza. L'incontro conclusivo con una terza sorellastra, cercata e rifiutata insieme, suggella il romanzo in un finale aperto che vede Momoko e i suoi interlocutori non riconciliati, ma pronti a intraprendere altri itinerari, alla scoperta di una nuova, non meno sofferta, maturità. Lo stile di Kawabata si offre qui al culmine della sua maturità. In un raffinato incastro di flashback, di deviazioni e ritorni, la narrazione trova la sua continuità non tanto in un lineare, «occidentale» sviluppo della vicenda, quanto in un continuum della coscienza dove ricordi, riflessioni e piccoli avvenimenti quotidiani nella loro apparente indifferenza costituiscono al contrario il vero centro del romanzo.

Bellezza e tristezza

Ma come in tutti i libri di Kawabata il senso nascosto è lo spietato incalzare del tempo. Dal groviglio di ombre e di ossessioni che scandiscono ogni storia d'amore, Kawabata tratteggia i personaggi di questo suo romanzo e li introduce in uno strano paesaggio sentimentale; Otoko e la sua bellissima e giovane allieva; un ragazzo ingenuo e appassionato; la moglie di Oki che ha sepolto nelle cure della casa tutto il suo carico di rancori e gelosie. In questa atmosfera grigia, crepuscolare, e quasi rassegnata, irrompe a un certo punto un'ondata di passione torbida e impetuosa. Ognuno dei personaggi appare dominato da un'idea ossessiva e su tutti incombe un presagio di tempesta...

br. Su una collina piena di fiori gialli, nel recinto di un vecchio tempio buddista, c'è una clinica psichiatrica. Cinque volte al giorno i rintocchi della campana del tempio portano al mondo esterno la voce dei pazienti. Ascoltando quei suoni, la madre e il fidanzato di Ineko - che hanno appena affidato la giovane alle cure dei medici - si interrogano sul suo dolore e sulla sua malattia, l'asomatognosia: dalla vista le scompare improvvisamente il corpo della persona amata. Sulla via del ritorno, Hisano e la madre di Ineko cercano in quei suoni le vibrazioni del suo animo. Il loro dialogo - nitido e asciutto - evoca con acuminata delicatezza eventi e protagonisti del passato, fra i quali si staglia la figura del padre di Ineko, il colonnello Kizaki Masayuki, soldato fedele a un Giappone ormai scomparso, con la sua tragica morte. Un passato in cui Hisano scava ostinatamente alla ricerca delle fratture che hanno messo a repentaglio la mente della sua innamorata e il loro amore in boccio. Ultimo, incompiuto romanzo di Kawabata, "Denti di leone" uscì a puntate sulla rivista letteraria «Shincho» e - dopo un approfondito editing condotto dal genero dello scrittore in base alle correzioni autografe che testimoniano il lavoro di riscrittura in corso - fu pubblicato all'indomani della morte di Kawabata in un numero speciale della stessa rivista.

brossura Si tratta del primo romanzo di Kawabata ad essere stato tradotto in italiano (1959). Il paese del titolo è il paradiso terrestre sulla costa occidentale della maggior isola del Giappone, dove sorgono terme squisite, e delicati luoghi di villeggiatura. È questa la scena su cui si dipana la storia di Shimamura, ricco e raffinato esteta, e Komako, geisha delle terme. Komako fa parte di una categoria di geishe assai diversa da quella di città: le cortigiane del paese delle nevi non potranno mai diventare famose musiciste o danzatrici. Il loro destino è quello di maturare tra gli incanti e la corruzione di quel luogo appartato, dedito alla ricerca del riposo perfetto. Quello dei protagonisti è quindi un incontro d'amore elusivo e precario.

Scritto nel 1926 e divenuto a partire dal dopoguerra immensamente popolare, "La danzatrice di Izu" è la storia dell'iniziazione di uno studente che, per scacciare i suoi «tormenti di ventenne», si mette in viaggio verso la penisola di Izu. Un viaggio - nei colori autunnali di boschi incontaminati, catene montuose e scoscese vallate - che lo segnerà per sempre, giacché, grazie all'incontro con una giovane artista girovaga, scoprirà la pura bellezza. Kaoru ha lunghe gambe che rendono il suo corpo simile a un giovane albero di paulonia, occhi magnifici, e quando ride pare che sbocci: ma soprattutto colpisce in lei la semplicità piena di stupore, il candore infantile nel mettere a nudo i sentimenti. Effimera, evanescente, ineffabile nella sua assoluta naturalezza, la bellezza è dunque - come ci rivelano due magnifiche conferenze del 1969 che costituiscono il secondo pannello di questo libro - 'ichigo ichie', cioè incontro unico e irripetibile, miracolosa combinazione di elementi insostituibili: come il prezioso tè che viene raccolto nella prefettura di Shizuoka la ottantottesima notte dopo l'inizio della primavera, capace di regalare eterna giovinezza, lunga vita e salute. Scoprire e registrare fugaci momenti di bellezza nell'arte, nella natura, nella vita di ogni giorno, e insieme la gioia e il dolore che suscita la sua impermanenza è precisamente, per Kawabata, la funzione della letteratura giapponese.
