San Francisco Shanghai / Macao / Hong Kong: The Trans-Pacific Chinese Junk Expedition Inc 1939. Letters are dated: Nov 20 1938; Jan 18th 1939; Jan 27th 1939; and Feb 16th 1939. Though typewritten and mimeographed all four are personally signed by Halliburton. Letters typewritten to buff paper envelopes with blue seal of the "Sea Dragon" with illustration printed to front. Modest wear to paper some light age-toning and rubbing to papers. Envelopes rubbed and worn. Withal a VG lot. Pages within the letters: 5 3 4 3 Total of 16 typewritten pages. Two black and white Kodak photographs are included printed in 1957 presumably from a negative of Robert Pullen's famous shots of the "Sea Dragon" taken just before its doomed maiden voyage. Letters: 14" x 8-1/2". Photographs:. <br/><br/>Who took the first aerial picture of Mount Everest after receiving express permission by stunning the Majarajah of Nepal with bi-plane aerobatics Richard Halliburton was a legendary American travel writer and adventurer. Reading stories of his feats and antics seem surreal - after all who flies an airplane upside down over the Taj Mahal Halliburton was born in January of 1900 in Brownsville Tennessee. Deciding at an early age not to settle down and grow old with a wife and family as the rest of his family and friends seemed to be doing. After graduating from Princeton Halliburton traveled on as many adventures as possible and published his first novel The Royal Road to Romance in 1925 at the tender age of 25. His first novel became a bestseller and was followed by more published adventures in 1927 and 1929. He enjoyed fame and adventures for a little over a decade before deciding in 1938 that his next grand feat would be to cross the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the San Francisco International Exposition in a Chinese Junk ship made expressly for his purposes. It is on this voyage that Halliburton and the entire crew of the Junk the "Sea Dragon" were lost at sea having gotten caught in a typhoon. In 1945 a 150-foot ship outline with Chinese lettering washed ashore in California this thought to possibly be some of the wreckage of the "Sea Dragon." Letter I: Halliburton describes the arrival in China and purpose of the expedition as well as his interest in junks stemming from a 1 ft. scale model he sailed as a child. He explains that he chose to use a junk for his journey because of their stability and notes that it is possible it will not be the smoothest ride. He quips: "If the junk should be small the storms violent and the voyage long - all the better. For if there is no hazard no battle where is the sport" He introduces the "friends" of the expedition to his crew of Captain John Welch Henry von Fehren "Bru" Potter among others. Halliburton also spends a significant amount of time discussing the war with China and Japan and the Japanese belief systems. Letter 2: The second letter discusses the search for an appropriate junk and the ultimate decision to build their own that could be modified for the journey. Working with the man said to be the best ship-builder in Hong Kong Mr. Fat Kau and the appropriation of a few more crew members a chef and a radio operator. Letter 3: The third letter posted from Canton desribes their taking the Sea Dragon out for a "shake down" cruise with Mr. Fat Kau as his guest who though a builder of ships had never sailed on one and with high seas nearly everyone aboard became seasick. Halliburton notes the dry deck despite the high waves and believes he was right about the Sea Dragon's sea-worthiness. Much of the rest of the letter is spent discussing Canton the disputes between the Chinese and Japanese the destruction the looters and other conditions in the city. Letter 4: After setting out on their voyage the Sea Dragon needed to return after only 2 days due to sickness on the boat. Though Halliburton seems only a trifle annoyed at the delay of their voyage he is excited enough to try again and leaves his readers with this: "In about another week we plan to leave again to slip away as quietly as possible and head east once more around the southern tip of Formosa - and straight on to Midway. If all goes well the next letter the fifth will carry an American stamp for Midway Island is American. When this the fourth letter reaches you we'll be a thousand miles along the way - I hope. Cuore del romanzo sono le vicende di una cameriera sedicenne, di grande bellezza e ancora più grande virtù, che resiste ai tentativi di seduzione del proprio padrone, del quale pure è sinceramente innamorata, fino a riuscire a condurlo al matrimonio. Una trama di sconvolgente novità per l'epoca, con una protagonista donna, di umile condizione sociale, e per di più impegnata in una battaglia per affermare la parità dei sessi in materia di etica sessuale. Un romanzo che appare ancora oggi di interesse per la narrazione avvincente e ricca di suspense, per la minuziosa descrizione della vita quotidiana settecentesca, ma soprattutto per la finezza dell'analisi psicologica. Richardson rappresenta infatti con vivacità e sottigliezza rare le emozioni della protagonista e trova nella nuova forma del romanzo epistolare il veicolo più adatto per l'espressione di quel "sentimento" che il Settecento, il Secolo dei Lumi, andava proprio allora scoprendo.

Quasi nulla piace ai lettori di Mordecai Richler quanto addentrarsi nell'albero genealogico di Barney Panofsky, sperando prima o poi di imbattersi nel vero progenitore romanzesco di uno dei personaggi più amati di questi anni. Bene, con questo libro del 1980 la singolare caccia all'uomo iniziata, in Italia, tredici anni fa può considerarsi conclusa. Entra Joshua Shapiro, scrittore e giornalista di successo ricoverato in ospedale dopo la misteriosa sparizione dell'amatissima moglie, e dopo essere stato coinvolto in un clamoroso scandalo di natura sessuale. Nello stato confusionale in cui si trova, joshua non è in grado di dire quale delle innumerevoli voci che circolano sul suo conto sia fondata, e quale invece debba considerarsi una calunnia. Per riuscirci, dovrà infatti andare molto indietro nel tempo, fino a un'infanzia affidata in parti uguali alla madre, nota nella zona di St. Urbain Street per i suoi spogliarelli, e al padre, un pugile a riposo e furfante in attività, molto ansioso di trasmettere al figlio i segreti del suo (secondo) mestiere. E furono proprio gli anni trasgressivi della Swinging London a ispirargli, durante il suo lungo soggiorno in Inghilterra, questo romanzo, uno sberleffo così audace e irriverente da essere subito messo all'indice in numerosi paesi di lingua inglese. A doversi districare fra i meandri della 'controcultura' è Mortimer Griffin, che lavora in una sofisticata casa editrice, ha una vita familiare convenzionale e l'imperdonabile colpa di essere bello e wasp. Dopo l'acquisizione della Oriole Press da parte di un potentissimo e stravagante produttore hollywoodiano chiamato da tutti il Creatore di Stelle, il quale ha un solo vero scopo nella vita, la propria immortalità, Mortimer finisce in un labirinto dove fatichiamo a distinguere la farsa dalla satira e dall'horror. Tormentato dallo sguaiato tradimento della moglie con il laido amico Ziggy, perseguitato da un giornalista che lo accusa di essere un ipocrita ebreo rinnegato, scandalizzato dalla scuola all'avanguardia dove il figlio di otto anni recita Sade per poter liberare la sua sessualità, concupito da due colleghe più simili ad androidi che a donne vere, accusato via via di perbenismo, moralismo, razzismo, antisemitismo, mollezza e meschinità e sempre più insicuro delle sue prestazioni virili, Mortimer si ritrova protagonista di una tragicommedia dell'assurdo dall'esito di paradossale crudeltà.

br. Approdato a una tarda, linguacciuta, rissosa età, Barney Panofsky impugna la penna per difendersi dall'accusa di omicidio, e da altre calunnie non meno incresciose, diffuse dal suo arcinemico Terry McIver. Così, fra quattro dita di whisky e una boccata di Montecristo, Barney ripercorre la vita allegramente dissipata e profondamente scorretta che dal quartiere ebraico di Montreal lo ha portato nella Parigi dei primi anni Cinquanta e poi di nuovo in Canada, a trasformare le idee rastrellate nella giovinezza in "sitcom" decisamente popolari e altrettanto redditizie.

Le meraviglie di St. Urbain Street
br. Chi ha di Mordecai Richler l'immagine di un narratore irresistibile e torrenziale (irresistibile anche perché torrenziale) deve metterla da parte. Da vero epigono di razza del cabaret yiddish, Richler sapeva perfettamente come allestire un one man show, cioè come scrivere e interpretare un breve monologo che sotto l'ombrello di una comicità viscerale e inarginabile disegnasse, attraverso le vicissitudini e i tic di un personaggio, tutto un mondo. Non è dunque un caso che nel 1969, a metà circa della sua carriera, abbia deciso di prendersi una vacanza, e raccontare daccapo le storie del suo quartiere a Montreal, solo in una forma più diretta e confidenziale, lasciando cioè che si sovrapponessero e si intrecciassero così come, in apparenza, gli venivano in mente. Ecco perché in queste pagine si mischiano, con la massima libertà possibile, una disamina delle catastrofiche ripercussioni di un pezzo di "Time" sulla vita quotidiana di St. Urbain Street, una divagazione sull'uso "privato" delle cabine telefoniche pubbliche e un manualetto sul sesso redatto da un cultore della materia assai vicino a molti lettori: Duddy Kravitz. Per capire di chi è questo libro, e cosa offra, basterebbe insomma aprirlo a caso, senza neppure guardare la copertina.

Il racconto abbraccia due secoli, due sponde dell'Atlantico e cinque generazioni di una dinastia ebraica in cui tutto è smisurato: vitalità, ricchezza, lusso, inclinazione al piacere in ogni sua forma. Ma nessuna grande famiglia è senza macchia, e la macchia dei Gursky si chiama Solomon, rampollo in disgrazia che pare essere stato presente, come Zelig più o meno negli stessi anni, in tutti i momenti cruciali del ventesimo secolo - la Lunga Marcia, l'ultima telefonata di Marilyn, le deposizioni del Watergate, il raid di Entebbe. Solomon rimarrebbe tuttavia un mistero, se della sua fenomenale parabola non decidesse di occuparsi il più improbabile dei biografi, Moses Berger, ex ragazzo prodigio rovinato dal rancore e dall'alcol.

La musica segreta dei ricordi
ril. Certi ricordi sono palpabili, come gli oggetti in cui restano impressi. Per Salomé la felicità ha il colore delle arance. Quelle che raccoglieva a diciassette anni nel giardino del collegio, e in cui Octavio, per conquistarla, le nascondeva versi d'amore. Il dolore invece ha il suono di un grammofono, sepolto da tempo in fondo a uno scatolone. Salomé ha dovuto smettere di ascoltarlo nel tentativo di cancellare dalla mente un'immagine: quella degli aguzzini di Pinochet e delle torture che le hanno inflitto sulle arie di Mozart. Da allora, ha chiuso dentro di sé anche la verità, credendo di proteggere i figli, illudendosi di rimuovere il rancore che nutre verso l'idealismo di suo marito Octavio, pagato tanto caro sulla propria pelle. Ma quel dolore segreto ha finito solo per allontanarla da coloro che più amava. Perché un cuore senza voce è come una casa sprangata, in cui non entra più luce. Solo a uno sconosciuto Salomé accetterà di raccontare la sua storia. Uno straniero incontrato all'altro capo del mondo, in Svezia, dove lei ha ottenuto asilo politico.
