Leonard Halford Dudley Buxton 1889-1939 had obtained a distinction in the Diploma in Anthropology at Oxford. He was appointed Demonstrator in Physical Anthropology in 1913. Buxton was appointed Lecturer in Physical Anthropology in 1922 and University Reader in 1927 the first Reader in Physical Anthropology at Oxford. His work was assessed by one of his professional descendants: Buxton undertook some craniometrics and was for example involved in examining archaeological material from Crete and Mesopotamia. But he never became a slave to the approach like so many of his contemporaries. He was much more interested in general ethnology and recording the patterns of human variety around the world. . . . A particularly insightful piece of work Arthur Thomson and Buxton undertook was to examine the global distribution of variation in the nasal index. This showed a high correlation with the variability in the geographical distribution of atmospheric relative humidity and was perhaps the first occasion when anthropometrics were examined in a functional way. Autograph musical quotation of the beloved song "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man of Mine" by the important Broadway and Hollywood composer penned on a leaf from the visitor's book of the manager's office at the London Hippodrome in 1928 and boldly signed. The leaf is also signed and dated on recto and verso by several other prominent figures of the era including librettist and producer Oscar Hammerstein 1895 - 1960 composer and songwriter Herbert Stothart 1885 - 1949 producer and screenwriter Laurence Schwab 1892 - 1952 and Polish artist Jan Junosza de Rosciszewski "Tom Titt". 20 x 25 cm.<br style="">"Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II is one of the most famous songs from their classic 1927 musical play Show Boat adapted from Edna Ferber's novel. The song written in a blues tempo is sung in the show by several characters but is most closely associated with the character Julie the biracial leading lady of the showboat "Cotton Blossom".<br style=""><br style="">Kern's first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein the popular musical Sunny had played successfully at the Hippodrome in 1926. Sent to Al Smith the former governor of New York requesting his professional help after a colleague's death in full: "The Nine commissioners of Palisades Interstate Park New Jersey and New York Commissions unanimously request you be appointed to fill New York vacancy caused by the death of Dr. Partridge. I hope much you will accept this and have wired Herbert Lehman to call you up Monday morning. If you will say yes I understand New Jersey Senate will confirm your appointment Tuesday night when they meet for two day session. Franklin D. Roosevelt." Pinholes in the top margin and uniform browning; very good condition. Matted in gray beside a photo of Roosevelt and set in a silver frame measuring 11 x 17.5 inches. unknown

Albany NY 1932. unbound. 1 page on "State of New York Executive Chamber" letterhead 10.5 x 8 inches Albany New York April 16 1932. Written to powerful New York attorney Frederic R. Coudert whose support was needed in Roosevelt's anticipated run for the Presidency of the United States just three months before the Democratic National Convention in part: ".At least I am grateful for one thing - that you do not class me as a mere politician.As for the League of Nations it is too long a subject for us to discuss on paper but perhaps it may interest you to know that half a dozen people who have been just as strongly for the League as you have after talking with me subscribed to the plan I have outlined to them. For instance Frank Sayre and his wife Jessie Woodrow Wilson spent the night at Hyde Park a week ago and after we talked for an hour completely changed their opinion about my stand. All that I can tell you in this note is that my objective and yours happen to be not merely similar but identical but if you maintain your method of attaining the objective you may get there in twenty years at the earliest or not at all; on the other hand I believe that my method for attaining the same objective will get us there in from five to ten years with far greater certainty. Think that over and for heaven's sake maintain your faith. Remember that it sometimes takes a great courage to hew out a new line. I quote your example: Cleveland T.R. and Wilson did just that." Coudert's support of the League of Nations came about due to the fact that his family law firm had represented the interests of British Government for close to a century and he wanted to be assured that a Roosevelt administration would maintain a strong alliance with England. However seven years later he became a strong isolationist aligning himself with his friend Charles Lindbergh and barely supported the Lend Lease. On the other hand F.D.R. coined the term "United Nations" and made contributions to the original drafted charter. Hand-Edited Story and Two Typed Letters Signed
Washington 1907. unbound. American author editor and compiler of historical fiction and factual reminiscences. She had a long association with Harper's Monthly Magazine and published two books about Abraham Lincoln with Harper and Brothers: "The Toy-Shop" a romantic story of the president's quest to recapture his youth and "Body-guard to the President" the recollections of Col. William H. Crook. In 1907 Harper's Monthly Magazine published "The Toy -Shop" originally a 15-page story about Abraham Lincoln. The response was so great that Harper's suggested that Gerry write a full-length book. We offer the original 15-page signed printed story of "The Toy-Shop" that appeared in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1907 in which Margarita Gerry has made extensive handwritten corrections deletions sentence changes added writings etc. which has altered the published version to the point of it becoming an entirely new manuscript unpublished. It is quite possible that she used this extensively-corrected and altered manuscript as a guideline for the book project which resulted from the original short story. Her editing covers almost every single printed line in red ink. Also included: two typed letters signed each 1 page on personal stationery Washington D.C. no date but docketed 1907 both dealing with her difficulties in parting with a photograph of herself that a publisher needs for reproduction "Please return this picture.it is the only one I have.so I really couldn't bear to give it up." Both letters are trimmed; all items are in good condition. unknown
