Comprising 19 black and white silver gelatin press photos measuring between 7" x 5" and 10" x 8". This collection captures crucial moments in the development testing and deployment of these strategic and tactical missile systems by the U.S. military and its allied forces from the 1950s through the 1980s.<br /> <br /> The archive includes a diverse array of missile types ranging from intercontinental ballistic missiles ICBMs to tactical battlefield missiles. Several images focus on the Northrop Snark SM-62 described in a caption as “the first U.S. intercontinental guided missile†undergoing tests at Patrick Air Force Base Florida. The Snark a “winged pilotless bomber capable of delivering an atomic warhead over trans-oceanic distances†was developed by Northrop Aircraft under contract with the U.S. Air Force with research beginning as early as 1946. Another photograph of the Snark highlights its “sharply-swept wings and its relative size†emphasizing its role in early nuclear deterrence strategies. A 1958 newspaper clipping attached to the back of the photograph describes the Goose as a “ground-launched diversionary missile†meant to “be launched ahead or in concert with strategic missiles and manned bombers to serve as a decoy against enemy air defense systems.†This collection provides an invaluable visual record of the technological evolution of Cold War missile programs spanning early intercontinental nuclear delivery systems anti-ballistic missile defenses submarine-launched capabilities and tactical battlefield missiles.
