He's been called the greatest American general since Ulysses Grant the world's champion tank commander a pure soldier and affectionately General 'Abe.' Yet relatively little is known by the general public about this man who for more than four decades in three wars and in peacetime service demonstrated the skill courage integrity and compassion that made him a legend in his profession. Now in THUNDERBOLT Lewis Sorley brings us the definitive biography of General Creighton Abrams placing the man and his achievements within the context of the Army he served and ultimately led and of the national and international events in which he played a vital role. Meticulously researched and richly detailed THUNDERBOLT explores the brilliant career of this authentic military hero from cadet to Army Chief of Staff. A classic American success story Creighton Abrams graduated from West Point in 1936 and spent four years as a troop officer in the 7th Cavalry Regiment Fort Bliss before joining the newly established Armored Force in 1940. He served with the 4th Armored Division throughout World War II first as commander of the 37th Tank Battalion later as Combat Command commander. During that war he won two Distinguished Service Crosses led the tank column that broke through the Nazi encirclement of the 101st Airborne Division in the Battle of the Bulge and used up or wore out seven tanks all of them named Thunderbolt. A complex and sophisticated man Abrams was equally capable whether leading a tank column across Europe or overseeing Army troops on civil rights duty during integration at the University of Mississippi. In Vietnam he further proved his tactical skill and diplomacy as commander of U.S. forces during the four difficult years of the American withdrawal. THUNDERBOLT sheds new light on these largely neglected latter years of the Vietnam conflict showing how Abrams radically revised the approach to fighting the war and achieved unprecedented success in anticipating and preempting enemy offensives at a time when his own troops were progressively being redeployed to the United States. Abrams returned from Vietnam to an Army racked with all the problems of having fought a long and unpopular war. Succeeding General William C. Westmoreland as Army Chief of Staff he set about the task of restoring the integrity self-confidence and self-respect of the force. Despite his untimely death after only two years in office he has been credited by the leaders of today's Army with initiating the reforms that led to victory in Desert Storm.". MacDonald J. Fred
Television and the Red Menace: The Video Road to Vietnam
Westport Connecticut U.S.A.: Praeger Pub Text 1985. Choice "This is an important chapter in the history of mass persuasion. The work is comprehensive in its analysis of US television's political role from 1945 to 1965 and the author compellingly bases his case on a thorough investigation of printed materials and audiovisual recordings. Beginning with the alliance between broadcasting media and government during and even prior to WWII MacDonald shows how TV disposed Americans to accept an undeclared war in Vietnam. It did this on a vast scale with news and entertainment that systematically and uncritically affirmed the superiority of American attitudes and fantasies and presented action as superior to thought in resolving conflicts. Drama and news even religious and children's programming through stereotypes and simplistic formulas reduced the world's complexity to a contest between good US and evil communism. This is a history with lessons for the future. The work strikingly confirms Jacques Ellul's thesis that in modern technological society propaganda is relentless and ubiquitous. . With a useful bibliography and index it is especially valuable for academics and students of propaganda." Review This is an important chapter in the history of mass persuasion. They Marched Into Sunlight - Vietnam and America October1967
NY: Simon & Schuster Paperbacks 2003. Soft cover. Very Good. From the book ""Perhaps once every five years appears a book of serious nonfiction so brilliantly conceived that it just has to be great. 'They Marched Into Sunlight' is one of those books. It is perhaps the most impressive book to explain the Vietnam era since Neil Sheehan's 'A Bright Shining Lie' published 15 years ago. When the literature of the Vietnam era is winnowed by time 'They Marched Into Sunlight' will be one of the few books being read a century from now."" <p> Soft cover in fine condition. Text block clean and tight. No markings noted. Book has a pictorial cover. Simon & Schuster Paperbacks paperback

Here is the epic story of Vietnam and the sixties told through the events of a few gripping passionate days of war and peace in October 1967. They Marched Into Sunlight brings that tumultuous time back to life while exploring questions about the meaning of dissent and the official manipulation of truth issues as relevant today as they were decades ago. In a seamless narrative Maraniss weaves together the stories of three very different worlds: the death and heroism of soldiers in Vietnam the anger and anxiety of antiwar students back home and the confusion and obfuscating behavior of officials in Washington. To understand what happens to the people in these interconnected stories is to understand America's anguish. Based on thousands of primary documents and 180 on-the-record interviews the book describes the battles that evoked cultural and political conflicts that still reverberate. Simon & Schuster Paperback
